Open letter on our Chamber of Commerce Situation

THE CHARADE THAT IS THE SCCI ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

I am writing as a Seychellois and member of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) to appeal to reason in order to salvage the credibility of our country's premier and venerable business organisation.

I am not in politics nor am I a member of any political party. I believe politics should be left to politicians. However, I endorse our Government’s stance that it should only be a facilitator and regulator and let the private sector free to do business.

However, the election of the Chairman and Council (executive committee) of the SCCI which took place on Friday 9th April, at the National Theatre was a charade that has brought the reputation of our venerable organisation into disrepute. The way the whole affair was conducted raises questions on the credibility of the election of the Chairman and other office bearers, in view of the fact that the outgoing chairman as well as the meeting as a whole agreed that there were serious discrepancies between the number of members entitled to vote and the number of ballots that were counted. In political jargon this is known as stuffing the ballot box.

Moreover, the manoeuvrings of one of the candidates, who was also the outgoing chairman, in the weeks prior to the ballot, when many “new” members were admitted, their subscriptions paid for by the candidate himself, without any proper verification of their claim as legitimate businesses, raises doubts on the credibility of the entire exercise. It is further propounded by the tactics of the candidate using his newspaper to publish a list of candidates to the exclusion of other candidates standing in that election and using his printing press to print ballot papers to be used in the elections without the authority of the outgoing Council. No one should be blamed for coming to the conclusion that this whole episode was an exercise in blatant vote rigging.

Today I am simply putting forward my point of view about the whole affair for reflection. Notwithstanding the manoeuvrings of one of the participants in that election, the episode has helped to underscore a trend in the conduct of business affairs in our country which is disturbing and potentially destabilising for our social coherence. Dr Ramados’s own publicity in the local press this week, thanking those who voted for him, a number of whom are small shopkeepers whose membership he collected at the last minute, gives the distinct impression that he would be speaking for only a section of our business community.

His heavy handed manner, reminding everyone that he has countless companies employing a thousand people or more serves only to re-enforce the notion that, under his leadership as a result of his tactics, the SCCI has become a subsidiary of his business empire. Will dignitaries and foreign representatives see him as a premier representative of the private sector of Seychelles when they meet with him, or rather see him as an individual with his own private agenda?

Finally, Dr Ramadoss must appreciate that there is no obligation for any business to be a member of the SCCI, and that if by his actions he earns only opprobrium from them, the important and legitimate businesses would desert the Chamber and render his “victory” an empty one. I sincerely hope reason will prevail before permanent damage is done to our country's image and social coherence.

Daniella, thank you for your professionally written letter which outlines the irregularities as well as the threat to the SCCI's future.

Dr. Ramadoss has been propped up by a corrupt SPPF Government and is today a kingpin and front man for the ruling party. I attended the SCCI AGM on Friday and was simply shocked at the arrogance of the man. I don't hate anyone and being a black man with African decendents, I am certainly not xenophobic as many others in the crowd were.

But when an Indian national who arrived in Seychelles as an Army doctor can today claim a net worth of 300 plus million rupees, when this man employs nearly 20% of the private sector employees, when this man seems to operate with a bankroll that sees no end, one has to wonder at the source of his wealth let alone the power that he wields in our small country.

When the good Doctor took the microphone and insulted Mrs. Nicole Tirant in front of 400 plus, when the man shouted that he was a Seychellois, when the man started speaking about democracy, when the man printed the ballots at his own press, when the man had all the SPPF MNA's at his beck and call, one starts to wonder and even marvel at this man's power. In fact, it was quite scary and disturbing for me and unless something changes at the SCCI, I will not renew my membership.

I dare say that Ramadoss today is probably the richest businessman in Seychelles, or at least number two after concrete-rock magnate Joe Albert and Vijay Patel, another Indian-Seychellois who arrived in SEychelles a few decades ago. If not the richest, then surely Ramadoss is the most powerful.

Ramadoss must be stopped one way or another. The Attorney General, the Tax Department and the Michel Government must start investigating the source of this man's wealth as no one could amass such a large fortune in that short amount of time without some form or corruption. The people of Seychelles has a right to know and the Government needs to collect its fair share of taxes that will benefit all Seychellois.

Finally, Doctor Ramadoss has brought shame to the SCCI and he should step down. This institution will not be representative of the country businesses as long as he remains Chairman. Many of my business colleagues have told me that they plan to cancel their membership if Ramadoss is allowed to continue with his charade.

God bless our country and may the winds of change blow over us one day.

Mrs Daniella viewpoint is another reason why we should deport those illegals from our shores and it also shows the frustration of Seychellois towards this failed and corrupted SPPF government. They out of ideas so they must depend on foreigners to think for them.

I reply to Jeane D'Arc

On issue of deportation of foreigners,in Seychelles. We are not anti- foreigner, we are pro Seychellois-Rasin.

Foreigners in general, must not delve or meddle in our politics or our affairs of state. If they follow this rule, they are welcome. If they do not follow this rule, they are not welcome and when the Rasin-Government comes to power, we will deport them for participating in our political affairs and not respecting Seychellois in their motherland.

Ramadoss is particularly funny case. He came to Seychelles as an Army doctor. He became the personal doctor of Mr. Rene, and cuddled Rene's favor over the years. Hence the many business favors that fell upon him.

Ramadoss claims he is a Seychellois by citizenship. But he was under government contract for the time he used for naturalization. Hence, his citizenship would fall into the Fabrike catagory.

Because Ramadoss does meddle in our politics, and even stands on political rallies for SPPF and PP, Ramadoss would meet the requirements of deportation, but I would not suggest that this apply to all foreigners, that invest in Seychelles, and mind their business and not meddle in our politics.

To me, personally, Dr.Ramadoss will never be a Seychellois.

I trust this helps.

It must be noted that the tactics being used by Ramboss and his party of caste are the same used some decades ago by illegal Indian immigrants to illegally stake a claim of Fiji islands.

They started by controlling the Fijian's local economy, and in parrallel made lots of kids, outnumbering the Fijian naitives in the blink of an eye.

Having achieved the above, it was not that difficult for them to completely take control of the whole country.

We must make sure that we don't experience the same faith as the FIJIANS.

In one breath, Anonymous says that Ramadoss "has been propped by a corrupt PL Government...made a King Pin and Front Man for the Ruling Party" and yet goes on to contradict himself by suggesting that "Michel, the Tax Office and the Attorney General should have him the Doctor investigated." Please engage the brain before you put pen to paper Mate!!.

And by the way, you are a Seychellois and I am not interested to know where your roots come from because I take and accept you as you are...an Africa Seychellois...a Chinese Seychellois...and Indian Seychellois....a French Seychellois and so on. I am not in the least interested in the colour of your skin or the composition of your hair.

How could one possibly describe a beautiful Seychelloise and Praslinoise at that in the mould of Dianella Payet-Alis-Lablache?.

Also anonimous, could you enlighten us in what way did Ramadoss "insult the Secretary Mrs. Tirant?."

TIKLO says have a nice day.

To Dianella,

It has been established that Ah-man Percy printed 600 ballot papers and had the "disk" destroyed. The question that need to be answered is: Who did Percy give the printed ballot papers to?.

Did he give them to Dr. Ramadoss his Boss and Owner of the Rising Sun Press or did Percy hand the ballot papers to the Secretary-General Mrs. Nichole Gherardi-Tirant?.

Mrs. Tirant as Secretary, it is her duty to hand out the ballot papers to the 413 Members of the SCCI and the rest of the blanks kept under her care or destroyed because she is the one who is accountable to the running of the proceedings of an AGM?.

Again I ask, has this fiasco been orchestrated by Mrs. Tirant to give the impression that Ramadoss has "cheated....ballot stuffing..being responsible for the iregularities" and so forth?.

Why would Ramadoss say that he has been undermined by Mrs. Tirant?.

Please excuse my political in-correctness Dianella when I say that you do however come across as snobbish when you say that the good name and Prestige of the SCCI will suffer as a result of an Indian Seychellois chairing the SCCI instead of a D'offay Elitist that has been outsmarted once again.

I hope that you have all learnt something and by enlisting the enthusiasm of our Fishermen, Carpenters and all other Tradesmen you Guys can do a Ramadoss and things will definitely be different next time around. You Guys also have to realise that being the Movers and Shakers, the Government is there to impliment your reccomendations, Aims and Objectives if warranted. They also put in place the Infra-Structures. The Government does not tell the Business Circles how to run their businesses. TIKLO sends warmest regards to Dianella and says would love to hear from you again as soon as possible. I cannot wait to read what the Good Doctor L.Popip Sheikh....errhhh Sik has to say on this SCCI comedy of errors. Ha!!

Please explain why any law abiding businessman would vote for Dr Ramadoss after the debacle that was Seychelles first private hospital. Complaints of misappropriation of funds, negligence and fraud abound with investors threatening to sue. Yes he is so well qualified for his Chairmanship of SCCI, and those councilors, especially Nollie Alexander and SPPF MNAs should hang their heads in shame.

Understanding the importance and strategy for Ramadoss to control SCCI........

After 5t June 1977, when Seychelles became a one party state, ruled by a dictator who controlled everything there was no real need or relevance for independent institutions such as SCCI to exist. SCCI managed to exist, god only knows how. At times there was no quorum at the SCCI Agm, meetings had to be called off. During the days of one party state SPPF did not give a damn and did not ‘recognise’ SCCI.

After the re-introduction of multi-party politics, SPPF managed to ignore and sidelined the SCCI for the best part of 10 years whilst the SPPF controlled all the lucrative business activities. Leading up to and since the arrival of the IMF to our shores, it has become increasingly important for the government of the day to recognise and work together with SCCI for the benefit of all legitimate, independent businesses and investors. In real terms the government becomes a facilitator to independent businesses rather than a business preventative government which was the case prior to the arrival of IMF to our shores. During the past decade, the SCCI started playing a very crucial role for the serious, independent business community. SCCI was vocal in exposing the unfair legislations and practices that was detriment to businesses and Seychelles in general.

The SCCI is usually the platform/institution and body that interacts with foreign bodies, businesses and delegations to ensure a fair and level playing field for all concerned including the government of the day.

The strategy for Ramadoss to control the SCCI is a well thought political strategy. The SCCI needs to be controlled by yes men such as Ramadoss to ensure foreign bodies such as IMF gets the message and impression that all is well within the business community of Seychelles. The result of this well engineered election is indeed a sad one for the independent business community. One the other hand it is a great result for SPPF who now have Ramadoss at the helm of SCCI. Ramadoss will ensure the likes of IMF get to hear what the government of the day wants them to hear. It is unfortunate that the SCCI has been turned into a political football.

There is no point blaming Ramadoss or SPPF government for the result of the meeting. We only have to blame ourselves the local independent business community for allowing Ramadoss to take control of this very important institution.

It is high time for the serious local business community to organise and mobilise support to oust Ramadoss from this post. If we do nothing we will return back to the days were only businesses affiliated to SPPF survive and do well.

Should you decide not to be on board with SPPF and the new SCCI you will suffer the consequences.
Do so at your own peril!

Food for thought.

Jean Pierre,

There is every point to blame Ramadoss as he is, despite being encouraged and supported by the PL, the man behind the scheme and even had the audacity to pay for new members so that he'd get their votes. Then again, Ramadoss has done nothing that the SPUP/SPPF/PL hasn't already been doing the ladt 30+ years and as we all know, people take examples from their idols. And we think Ramadoss is any different from many Seychellois, we are very wrong indeed. The only different is that he has made big bucks from corruption whilst the average corrupt Seychellois has made petty cash.

Fact remains that SCCI has become yet another PL mouthpiece and in many ways I believe that the happenings may after all elad to some good, this for the following reasons:

1) The people got a kick in the backside and see what Ramadoss and the PL is really made of. Sooner or later those SCCI Indians will feel the same power Ramadoss felt when he could take off his flip-flops and change them for a pair of Italian designer shoes and they will get greedy and more power hungry within their own ranks and sooner or later Ramadoss will have a challenger from his own clique.

2) Knowing what the SCCI is now made of and who controls it, a new organisation will hopefully be estyablished out of pure disgust and protest. Hence we'll have a counterpart which our traders can choose between and the SCCI's role as 'monopolist' in the field will be over.

3) Having competition in the field, Ramadoss will have less power as a whole and with him being less powerful, the PL will also follow. Mind you, some may think that Ramadoss' periods will be over soon and he'll be out of the SCCI as Albert Payet had to quit after his terms, but I can garuantee you that the rule of a maximum number of terms will be changed very soon allowing Ramadoss to stay as long as he pleases. And that with the blessing of the SCCI's member who will soon consist mainly of Indians. Then again, the abbreviation will remain appropiate: Seychelles Chamber of Commerce for Indians. It would be even better if it was changed to SICC, Seychelles Indian Chamber of Commerce. That would even satisfy TIKLO's fascination of SIK which he so often mentions together with PIP.

You do however have a good point when you say that it is high time that the business community organises itself to outvote Ramadoss. As I mentioned in my post on 'Indifference', I sincerely believe that the members should have stayed on and raised hell for Ramadoss instead of leaving and leaving him without any competition whatsoever. But, I do see teh point and function, not least necessity, of a counter organisation that would hopefully give the business community a choice and maybe the opposition some political backup at business level.

The important here here is to work against the PL and beat them at their own game. They want to infiltrate the SCCI, then they get competition. They gather all Indians in one place, we fill another with Seychellois and we will get Seychellois when they open their eyes and realize what hit them in the face. Important thing is to not give up and fight on for 2016 as 2011 is already lost.

I still maintain that the only person that can shed some light in so far as the iregularities is no other than the Secretary-General of the SCCI herself.

When Mr. Ahman destroyed the so called "disk", who did he give the 600 printed ballot paper to?. Was it to Ramadoss or Mrs. Tirant?.

Also, who organised the distribution of the ballot papers of the Proxies?.

Are we going to hear from Mrs. Tirant who last talked about the "lack of infrastructures" in regards to the Business Sector that she happens to represent on the SCCI Board?. It seems that Mrs. Tirant has a solution for everything else except to matters that matters and concerns her the most in her role as the Secretary General of the SCCI. TIKLO.

And where is Ramadoss' responsibility in all this TIKoLOr? I guess you're the type who keeps the change when the shop owner gives you too much cash back right? I can certainly see where you come from and what you're made of.

So what you're basically saying is that it is totally ok to win a highly doubtful election where there is a loophole in the infrastructure. Now what kind of example does that state? The right thing to do would have been to clear up the mess and re-run the election but naturally to you it seems ok to win an election based on dodgy practices and then blame the SG.

In my book it is the leader who has the overall responsibility, but that general practice is obviously not common to you. Says everything doesn't it?

SCCI chairman urges unity for business growth - 17.04.2010

As he begins his second mandate as the chairman of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Dr V Ramadoss has stressed the need for unity to help promote business and industry.

In a press communiqué, Dr Ramadoss has also talked of the need to work in partnership with the government of the day.

The chamber provides an avenue or a voice for businesses in Seychelles and it would therefore be in the interest of new and old concerns to become members for their mutual benefits, he has said.

In this globalised world the chamber would also develop new links, and enhance relationships with existing links so as to keep abreast of the development in the region and internationally. In this connection Seychelles will be hosting an important forum in October this year that will enable members in the region to meet and discuss pertinent issues that impact on trade development.

Dr Ramadoss says as a businessman he recognises the many challenges that have to be faced daily.
Issues to do with the Investment Code, the Employment Act and the impact of continuing economic and tax reforms for example are on the agenda. Collective cohesion is a necessary strategy to influence thinking and action. It is primordial that the chamber should speak with one voice and hence the need for determination and most of all, unity of purpose, he says.

On a practical plane, the communiqué said, it is essential that the chamber, after so many years of existence, should have a pied-a-terre. Dr Ramadoss has vowed to bring this to fruition and by the end of his mandate he hopes to have an impressive building erected for the chamber. Apart from housing the business of the SCCI, this edifice will ensure financial security in that it will lease offices to business organisations.

“The chairman would like to call on all members and would-be members to join forces and to work for the common interest of the well-being of the people of Seychelles.

The election of Dr Ramadoss has, however, drawn mixed reactions and we have received a number of letters criticising the way it was done. One of the letters came from Mr Paul Chow.

Another was written by Daniella Payet-Alis, a member of the SCCI:
“I am not in politics nor am I a member of any political party. I believe politics should be left to politicians. However, I endorse our government’s stance that it should only be a facilitator and regulator and let the private sector free to do business.

“However, the way the election of the chairman and executive committee of the SCCI was conducted raises questions on the credibility of the election of the chairman and other office bearers, in view of the fact that the outgoing chairman as well as the meeting as a whole agreed that there were serious discrepancies between the number of members entitled to vote and the number of ballots counted.

To Ramaboss,

I see you are already changing the direction of the SCCI from a serious business facilitator and voice of the business community to a serious competitor in the rental of offices !

SCCI should concentrate its efforts helping businesses rather than competing against landlords. SCCI should be encouraging a competitive free market rather than go into direct competiton against existing businesses and service providers.

Once you have built the SCCI pied-a-terre, it will be time to go into tourism business, wholesale importing and all the rest to add to your ever growing empire ......

TIKLO likes to speak in parables and meanings hidden by smoke and mirrors. This is to allow him to escape responsibility while imparting fear to those who oppose him. This tactic is a favorite of one schooled in deception like his friend Rene the Butcher.

This allows TIKLO, like his friend Rene the Butcher, to make not so veiled threats against people like Lydia Jumeau who dare to oppose the PP Collaborator's efforts to sell out our motherland from right under our noses. But we Seselwa Rasin are slowly losing our fear of Rene the Butcher, TIKLO the PP Collaborators and their velied and explicit threats of violence against their own people just to stay in power and to sell us out for just a few more Rupees. We Seselwa Rasin are politicizing and organizing ourselves despite PP Collaborator intimidation and politics of violence.

So the time comes nearer TIKLO for your friend Rene the Butcher to face justice before his own people the Seselwa Rasin he mercilessly butchered, and which past history of brutality now allows you TIKLO to make veiled but credible threats of violence against someone who just chooses to speak her mind.

Please spare me your "poppycocks and bubbles in like" Francis and your insults towards me and FAR.

The issues at hand is the AGM of the SCCI and no one has been able to answer a simple question as to who chaired the AGM?. If it was, and it should have been the Secretary General Mrs. Tirant, how competent or familiar is Mrs. Tirant in regards to the intricacies of corporate rules of procedures in meetings?.

My other question is when the results showed such blatant ballot irregularities, did Mrs. Tirant ordered time out so as to consult with other Members more familiar with AGM meeting procedures in order to either rule the AGM null and void.....or to declare Dr. Ramadoss the winner?. Some clarification on the matter would be much appreciated.

And to Francis, again I say spare us your "collaborateur and butcher" antics and stick to the issue at hand.

To both Patrick and Francis:

I believe that Tiklo's point is valid. Mrs Tirant was until recently Secretary of the SCCI, and in all logic she should have been the one behind the organisation of the SCCI election. I have no ground to believe that SCCI is any different from other NGOs, and similar organsation. She (Mrs Tirant) has a reponsibility of what happened on the election. Too many times people who have been given a mandate, do not take that work seriously or better still allow other people with sinister motives and agenda to get away with it and conveniently look that other way or do nothing!

On a more general note, many others (part of Board of Directors of Parastatals, Statutory Bodies...)of Air Seychelles, and many others, sit quietly on those boards, enjoy their perdiums and perks and then privately complain when they themselves form part of those organsiations. If one decides to stay on board, then one is part of the decison otherwise one should do right and resign!

Owning a regular lawn mower does not mean you
have to give up on mulching
your yard; you just have to be willing to do some work.
Depending on the density of the mulch, one should lay two
to six inches of mulch over topsoil in the vegetable garden.

I have noticed that over the course of constructing a relationship with real estate homeowners,
you'll be able to come to understand that, in each and every real estate deal, a commission is paid. All things considered, FSBO sellers do not "save" the percentage. Rather, they fight to win the commission simply by doing a great agent's occupation.

In doing this, they spend their money along with
time to conduct, as best they can, the tasks
of an adviser. Those jobs include getting known the home through marketing,
delivering the home to all buyers, creating a sense of
buyer urgency in order to trigger an offer, making arrangement for home inspections, tak qualification check ups with the bank, supervising maintenance tasks, and facilitating the closing.

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the
shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab
inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
