The Seychelles Column - By Christopher Gill

Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures…

…Ancient Communist saying!

No sooner that the Seychelles Freedom Party (SFP) was registered, and I gave a press conference calling for an all out BOYCOTT of the national Assembly elections, joining officially along with NDP and SNP. Immediately, the Election Commission registered another political party called Seychelles Popular Democratic Party, headed by Mr. David Pierre, ex SNP who turned in his membership to his party on national television. Mr. Pierre, was the Deputy Secretary General of the SNP.

David Pierre - SNP 2010 Conference addressing delegates on the issues of election, money and vote buying.  How ironic!

David Pierre

Correspondingly, the SPDP leader has announced, through SBC help, that he and his party will be participating in the upcoming elections for the National Assembly. They will field candidates, they will seek legislative office, and they will have a vote for the leader of the opposition.

This position is completely contradictory of the common unifying platform of the Seychelles opposition. Mr. Pierre has not met with anyone in the opposition prior to deciding if he will field candidates. I am personally uncertain if he even read the Commonwealth Report on the recommendations that have been made to level the playing field for Eighteen (18) years.

Allegations of Backing By Ruling Party

Immediately, as the party was registered, numerous allegations surfaced on the internet that the ruling party was financing Mr. David Pierre’s party.

These allegations have not been denied by Mr. Pierre, until now. However, there are reports that he has been seen making numerous trips and visits to Danny Faure’s office. Mr. Faure is the Vice President of Seychelles and high ranking PL official. What would a future opposition party leader be doing roaming even close to Danny Faure’s office, all by himself? Could this be true?
Danny Faure - Confused as usual

Desperate Times Indeed

The call for BOYCOTT of National Assembly elections is a unifying platform of all elements of the Seychelles opposition community. In spite of all our shortcomings, and all issues internally that we grapple with, we have been able to come up with a common stance and common purpose, that unifies all Seychelles opposition.

That is, a BOYCOTT of these elections is critical at this time, because the promises of democracy and freedom made by F.A. Rene in November 1991, after Eighteen (18) years, have not been kept by PL and James Michel. It is arguable that we have backed tracked to one party state in the last Six (6)  months faster then in the last Sixteen (16) years.

A Boycott exposes the promise broken by the SPPF and PL to implement democracy with corresponding freedoms made in 1991.

A Boycott exposes what the Commonwealth Expert Team (CET) in their Commonwealth Reports note, that is, we have numerous one party state laws in place that prohibit a full transition to democracy.

Basically, though we live in 2011 in life terms, but in terms of progress in democracy and freedom, we are still back in November 1991.

The Democracy Tree Without Roots

This means the democratic tree if you will, that Mr. F. A. Rene told us he was planting in November of 1991, has not taken root after Eighteen (18) years.
Albert Rene

Occasionally when it is exposed that the tree is really a dead tree, the next course of action, is to prop a few plastic oranges on the tree, to make the world believe, we have tree that is alive and well rooted. With the plastic oranges on the tree the communists can say that the tree is fine, it even bears fruit occasionally. You can even water the tree with sea water, it will thrive in appearance.

People of Seychelles, we are entering an era of plastic fruits in the opposition. As the opposition is shammed, like elections, and everything else around us, the world will see it for themselves, and we will not have to work to expose the sham, the entire tree without roots, will become a plastic tree that looks so beautiful, and lively, but it has not grown an inch in real terms since November 1991 nor has it borne any real fruit except for plastic fruits placed on the tree deliberately.

Do Not Lose Hope In Humanity

These tactics are expected of communists. They use them all over the world. In some communist countries, they fake debates, others will fake projects to give the people hope, many fake economic results to fake their success, when in fact it is all grand failure.

Faking an opposition is part of the communists effort to fake our realities. It is used to give cover and mask to their illegitimate democracies the world over.

The common thread in all communist societies is that faking it is never enough and they are sooner rather then later, exposed to the entire world, not just the central committee!

As they fake all the way, we must be united, act as one, for a common good cause that is greater then all of our sums divided.

This must be the biggest joke of the century. Pierre is either an idiot or a genius and I hope that he has asked Danny for at least 5 million to run against Party Lepep. Sa pti fem pe dryv son lapo lagel e y bezwen largen pov boug. Don't worry David, sa toutoune yne fini ganye servi par en bon pe zom. What an idiot!

Now add Carpin to the bunch and you can only laugh at the comedy. Albert Rene cannot be pleased with Misel.

As for me, I'm staying home and it will take another genius to get me out of my house to vote for these so-called politicians. They are all thieves.

Anonymous said...

TRAITOR. Judas had more scruples.

Anonymous said...

Who would vote for this fake politician? Or will Faure ask a few of his loyal supporters to cast a vote or two in Pierre's favour so that it all looks legitimate to the idiot observers?

Seychelles, do not be fooled by this travesty. Stay home, boycott this fraudulent election, and let us send a clear message to James Michel and his cronies that we cannot be bought.

Amen

James Michel should be ashamed of himself to be planning such treason against his own people. After visiting Australia which is a bastion of true democracy, how can he watch this charade? How can Albert Rene watch this nonsense? For the first time in my life, I wish I was a Libyan rebel with a few guns.
We the people of Seychelles deserve better than this treatment from Michel and his psycho party members. Pierre must be enjoying his newly found riches and lest he forgets, he is taking dirty Government money that the people have sweated for. Therefore he is as guilty as all the conniving, corrupt thieves that came before him. I feel sick to my stomach and cannot wait for the people to one day overthrow this corrupt Government.

The thing about Democracy is this-

it is fragile, and cannot be handled like you handle a cow to grass;

Michel seems to think it is easy and you handle a democracy exactly like crab to grass;

Rene must be laughing his head off at how Michel Bozo's about and now he has the whole country on the verge of one party state.

The democratic status of a country is not a toy Michel. It is not your mistress to do as you please with it and pay it off as you please.

We want our rights.

Amen

Seychelles country downgrade will follow for political instability thanks to James Michel's idiotic ideas on how to run a country.

This is a complete shame.

Does David Pierre know what he is doing?

Is this what has been crawling under his skin all these years?

David, my friend, you have made a big mistake.

Pull back before it is too late for you.

The Lord will guide you if you avail yourself to him in the hour of your confusion despair. I can see it all over your face. You cannot hide.

Trust me on the following:
1.David Pierre has been paid big time for this.

2.Danny Faure, preparing himself to be president in three years'time is the driver behind this, with James Michel's blessings.

3.Danny'd plans is to have Pierre as the next leader of opposition, by hook or by crook. It'll look good for the world to see that we have an opposition & lepep will have someone they "can work with".

Since we've proved last May that we're monkeys,Lepep are now convinced of this and just wants to prolong it by again making us believe in father christmas.

All of us who believe in democracy and want to see change should stand firm and BOYCOTT this charade.Pierre will maybe get his 10% votes for him to get a PR seat, but it'll be from votes handed over to him by Lepep.
Already there are plans to organise Lepep voters in such a way that a few of them in each district vote for Pierre or his stooges.
What a joke all this is and how sad we've reached this stage.

Anonymous said...

Pierre has no electoral appeal. Remember he failed to beat Ginette Gamatis. He is obviously banking on people having to go to vote out of fear and opposition supporters will vote for him rather than Parti Lepep. He is retarding the fight for democracy and a level playing field for elections.

I am sure he blamed his failure to beat Gamatis on SPPF's money. Suddenly everything is OK.

The Electoral Commission has already, in just a few weeks, shown that it is a political instrument of the Parti Lepep government. Even if it is only Gappy who registers political parties, he is the Chairman of the Election Commission.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Pierre will get a few more gold rings for the rest of his fingers and a few more wrist bangles as well.
What a womanising wanker!

Trust-

If voter turn out is too low, elections process cannot be deemed "credible".

PL is tampering with democratic process, this will be more damaging for them then they seem to think.

Basically, they are running a Robert Mugabe show.

Danny Faure is foolish to dirty his reputation with one party state tactics. He does not have to go down that road.

If he does, we will finish off like the rest.

When somebody shows you 5 million rupees with promises of much more, including the position of Leader of Opposition, all "principles" are shelved, if not thrown out.
This is the lesson we're teaching the younger generation.

Anonymous said...

If Seychellois voters go along with that, they deserve these gangsters as leaders.

Anonymous said...

Voter turn out won't be low. Everyone of Michel's supporter, paid or unpaid, will turn up to vote.
I expect turnout to be at least 50% This is a decent showing by any standard. The Singaporian president was elected by just over 30% last week.

Anonymous said...

"If Seychellois voters go along with that, they deserve these gangsters as leaders"

Well, they've already made that choice last May, haven't they?
The very sad thing is that you & I now have to suffer the consequences.

Anonymous said...

The combined opposition should continue to let everyone know that Pierre's Democratic Party & parti Lepep is one and the same.
A vote for Pierre is a vote for Lepep. As simple as that.

Anonymous said...

For the first time in any "democracy" we're going to have the Leader of Opposition coming from the same party as the ruling party.
Democracy "a la Seychelloise" and en viktwar pou Sesel!

Danny Faure knows IMF will get difficult if there is no credible opposition in the country. He is trying to manufacture one. It was only last May that David Pierre told us in his resignation letter that he was a man of high principles. Now he is Parti Lepep's poodle. There has been an indecent haste to register Pierre's party, raising the question of who in the Election Commission has been paid off for this.

Now we know why Gappy stopped questioning SFP's party registration documents and suddenly registered SFP. He could hardly register Pierre's party while dragging his feet over SFP. Gappy is unfit to be Chair of the Election Commission whose reputation has already been tarnished.

Anonymous said...

The election turnout will be judged by previous turnounts of more than 80%. As many people will be forced to go to vote, the spoilt votes too will be judged by previous elections' spoilt votes.

"The difference between a party leader and a statesman is that a party leader is mostly interested in power and the next election, whereas a statesman is interested in the transformation of the society, the next generation and the long-term stability of the nation"

This is an extract of Mancham's Letter in today's issue of the Nation. Not clear why he's felt the necessity to distance himself from these new political formations but the difference he wants us to make between himself and James Michel is very telling.

Anonymous said...

Reply to Gappy questioning SFP-

Gappy stopped questioning Seychelles Freedom Party (SFP) registration because there was nothing to question.

If he did question anything, that would shed light to an not credible questioning process.

Please leave Seychelles Freedom Party out of Mr. Pierre's mess. The storm is just brewing and PL have exposed Seychelles in a dramatic way to the out side world.

What is important to note is that all communist regimes field fake oppositions. This is normal for them.

Similarly, they all pay a dear price for this practice.

Guys, the IMF couldn't give a rat's ass about whether we have an opposition party or not, just as long as government sticks to the measures agreed upon.
Much less the international community whose interests are clearly elsewhere. This is why the ruling party feel that they have an empty"laplenn football pou zwe football"!

Anonymous said...

This morning's Nation quotes David Pierre as saying that he would withdraw if SNP decided to stand in the elections as he did not want to split the opposition.

Please tell me what the guy is on & can I please have some???

I was disappointed when Pierre was not selected as VP candidate in the last elections, sadder when he left SNP.
But today, my respect for him is GONE. The guy is clearly an opportunist, ambitious goon.

Perhaps now is the time for all statesmen to distance themselves from Parti Lepep government because of their skulduggery.

As has been mentioned, political instability affects credit rating. Credit rating affects the country's ability to borrow and how much it pays in interest. This is where IMF will have a chat with Danny Faure. Remember he has already defaulted on loans. Political instability (do we have a credible opposition in the assembly or not and what does the real opposition do outside the assembly) will bring economic and financial pressure on Parti Lepep, and possibly derail IMF's economic plans and targets etc etc

Anonymous said...

Is it not time we got rid of that monster called Parti Lepep and move forward as a decent country ?

We can all stay at home for these elections so that Michel and co get the message loud and clear.

Anonymous said...

Comment-

Credit ratings for countries take into account progress in implementing democratic reforms, for countries that come out of a one party state.

Democratic practice is critical for stability and country forecasts.

Just look at what Standard and Poor did to the USA when they played with the debt ceiling. S&P downgraded USA from AAA to AAA-. It will take 10 years to recover.

To say the IMF cares a "rats ass" over this situation is not a well thought out point.

It resembles a frustrated perspective that is inaccurate. We must adjust to focus in accurately on our realities.

The "credibility" of the National Assembly vote will be tied to the number of voters that turn out taking into account the formation of a new party run by Pierre and the the Boycott of all the other opposition parties.

If PL had half a brain, they would re instate the National Assembly and get on with the electoral reforms, because they have pulled a lions tail so to speak. The opposition will galvanize now for FREEDOM. It has no other option, if it is to remain credible.

Libya has taught us that FREEDOM does not come cheap. There, it cost 50,000 lives. Here we only have to withhold 28,000 votes to start our walk to Freedom.

Boycott National Assembly Elections!

The trio in Nation don't look happy. The body language says they are only doing it for the money. Carpin can't join in yet because she is challenging her expulsion from SNP in the courts. Bad timing. Will the judges be fooled ?

Anonymous said...

Who is Francesca Monnaie ? Looks like one of Pierre's girlfriends roped in to give a semblance of support for the party.

Anonymous said...

It sounds like James Mancham thinks people might associate him with this latest act of Parti Lepep's skulduggery, given his close and unwise association with James Michel's presidency. He is keen to say that Pierre's Popular Democratic Party has nothing to do with him. Mancham would not have to explain himself if he kept a respectable distance with the Parti Lepep government and its dirty tricks. Mancham forgets that he was once the victim of these dirty tricks and nothing has changed. So Pierre's party does not get Mancham's endorsement. But we know that Parti Lepep has 'vays' of making people change their minds quickly.

Anonymous said...

Time to recognise the great work done by Ramkalawan to build up the opposition and keep it independent of Parti Lepep. It could not have been easy with the likes of Pierre, Carpin and a few others around. SNP will be stronger after it has purged itself of these undesirables. Being in opposition for such a long time was always going to be difficult for unity and loyalty. The fight must rightly shift to electoral reforms to break Parti Lepep's unfair dominance on elections. It is make or break time for democracy in Seychelles. We are focused on this goal and traitors and Parti Lepep's hired politicians cannot stop in our way.

Anonymous said...

The other goon in the Parti Lepep government is Govinden. He is reported in Nation that MNAs knew what they were called to do in the dissolution saga, despite the wording of the motion. Does it mean he has conceded that the motion was not properly worded to constitute a constitutional dissolution of the national assembly ?

He seems to be saying it does not matter how badly written the motion was. The courts are busy with constitutional cases precisely because the law is badly written. Govinden is a prime culprit. Who is he to say that Ferrari knew it was a motion to dissolve the assembly ? Why don't they call him before the court to ask hi
? Govinden is stupid to tell the courts he knew what was the minds of MNAs, if he has not asked them.

He should lose this case because he has already conceded that the motion passed was not a motion to dissolve the assembly. If he wins, it will only prove that the judges are scared to rule against Parti Lepep on major constitutional issues. They will send the message that badly written motions or law do not matter and that government goons are free to interpret the law the way they want.

Christopher Gill has been telling us for some time now we are in a one party state. He has registered the SFP and he called for a Boycott and has held true to the word. It is Ramkalawan who appointed the so called traitors Pierre, Carpin, Anthony Derjaques as SNP proportional Member of the National Assembly. Little if any consultation was ever held on this apptment. Those ppl were not sacked, they left on their own accord and joined the SPPF, it quite laughable to absolve Ramkalwan responsibilities. David Pierre was wearing a blue shirt and a blue tie. The table covers were blue. His party is called Popular Democratic Party. What can we read into that ? Trying to flatter Mancham ? I am surprised Volcere and DP has not slapped an injunction on this party, given the confusion. Why do people keep harping on about democracy when it is not a vote-winner in Seychelles. People worry about where they will get a new fridge to replace the one they got in 2007, not whether their MNA is democratically elected or not. Fridges get votes. Not freedom.

Like I said before and will say again, Seychellois are easily bought and only care about what they can get out of a situation in the short term without a care for the long term. They see politicians doing this every day so you cant blame them.

Anonymous said...

And has anyone wondered where funding for David Pierre's "Democratic" party comes from? OK he got a few millions to cross the floor last time but after a brand new car and a holiday of a life time in the far east you would have expected the bank balance to be low? His MNA pension may pay for the office rent but a political party needs more than this.WHO is funding the guy? Mancham?Lepep?Khalifa?all three? Somebody please ask him and this is something for our very "independent" electoral commission to look into.Now.

Anonymous said...

Indeed this is a question that the electoral commission needs to look into as soon as possible. The money a close friend of mine was offered cannot be coming from David Pierre's pension. It is worrying if again there are foreigners sticking their nose in our internal affairs. They should concentrate on building their mosques and stay out of internal politics.
And Pierre tells us that he's not for sale??????

with all due respect that I have for Mr Mancham. His description of a statesman and a partisan leader is correct but my question is that is Mr Mancham trying to insinuate that he is a statesman. If he is therefore he is probably the statesman of soliel D'or. Since he put his feet back on Seychelles after being in exile to say the truth I never never seen any statesmanship qualities in him. If he was a real statesman as he professes. He should have been the president of Seychelles. He was outwit and manipulated by Mr Rene. I stand to quote what Mr Rene once said. mon pou fer Mancham vin pli SPPF ki Madame Gamatis. the rest is history.
I would like to say that to Mr Mancham.
1. Travelling around the world bragging about National reconciliation does make one a statesman.
2. Real statesman are people with vision, principle and foresight.
3. Real statesman would be likened to a good shepherd who guide his sheep to green pasture not to the desert.
4. Real statesman do not compromise his people freedom with oppressors and criminals.

Sorry Mr Mancham your statesman hood has brought nothing since your arrival to the Seychelles instead we are sliding into a one party state by your brothers in arm Mr Michel and his foreign masters with your blessing.

Really statesman you will find in people like Mateba alais Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther king ,Ghandi etc. These were people with a vision and conviction that material things were irrelevant to them but the prosperity of their people was very dear to their heart.

Does David Pierre still think James Michel is a "kapon" ?

Anonymous said...

The case for the boycott is as strong as ever. There must be political reforms to remove the unfair advantages that Parti Lepep enjoys, before it is too late for reforms through the ballot box.

Pierre's opportunistic decision to form a party and take part in the elections in no way whatsoever diminishes the strength of the case for the boycott. But it does alleviate the political pressure on James Michel to undertake meaningful reforms before the next national assembly elections.

James Michel would be unwise to think that he can manipulate the electoral process and ensure that Pierre leads a poodle opposition in the national assembly of yes men and women, and that the real opposition will give up the fight for real reforms. He would be boxing himself into a corner, with unimaginable and untold consequences. There is still enough time to step back from an inferno of his own making.

The 25,000 who unequivocably voted for the opposition in the presidential elections, despite massive inducement to vote for Parti Lepep, cannot be denied a voice. The one-party state must be left firmly behind us and, in any case, for those tempted to turn back the clock, the world has changed immeasurably since 1977-1993.

History has shown that political machinations like Pierre's Popular Democratic Party (a misnomer if ever there was one) do not fare well. Remember Rhodesia and South Africa where the white regimes had similar short-lived political arrangements with black puppets in order to avoid majority rule. Marshall Petain's Vichy regime fared no better, when the French people chose to listen De Gaulle then exiled in London.

History may not be Pierre's suit. He is after all a self-professed mathematician with a bent for logic. He would do well to put aside calculations and plans to enrol paid collaborators for nominations day next week and see what lessons history has in store for demagogues like him. Pierre will pay dearly for his pétainisme.

Be Courageous people in the opposition. Like you have shown Lepep on the 21st of may that we cannot be bought unlike the liar David Pierre who has signed a pact with the devil. We will do it again this time by staying at home in that forthcoming election. What a victory will be for democracy when 25000 of the electorate will not turn up for that sham election between lepep1 v/s lepep2. David Pierre will go into hiding because after that the really opposition will explore all the avenues locally and internationally to make sure that oppression and dictatorship will not reign in our society again. Sorry for those short sighted opportunistic who are happy to stay in the kingdom of the blind where they are subjected to their kings rule who are all monkeys. Sorry lads god created us to be free from oppression and dictatorship rule. There will be more Khadaffis who will go into hiding one day. This will happen in the Seychelles too.

lastly,SFP ;SNP,DP are doing a good job by boycotting the coming fake election ,this is an action you should support it will help promote democracy in this country.

David Pierre faces his first blunder. His Popular Democratic Party lasted just a few days. It is now called Popular Democratic Movement or Mouvman Demokratik Popiler. Why does he not call it Parti Lepep and stop playing with the alphabet ?

Gappy bent over backwards to hastily register this Parti Lepep's clone and did not even question the name similarity with NDP.

Dhanjee loses his case at the Court of Appeal. As I have mentioned a few times on STAT, the election law says that nomination documents must be completed to the satisfaction of the Electoral Commission. This means all nomination forms that are required to be completed must be completed and completed properly, without omissions and errors. I could never understand how the Constitutional Court judges came to their decision in favour of Dhanjee if Dhanjee's nomination papers were incomplete because the data for national identity numbers were missing or wrong in some cases. The problem is that Gappy left it too late to check Dhanjee's papers and there was no time to allow Dhanjee to correct errors.

And magnanimous David Pierre has decided to change the name in the spirit of unity among political parties! Poor guy. He wants nothing but unity.

I think NDP should still mount a legal challenge and derail Pierre's participation in the elections. Mouvman Demokratik. Parti Demokratik. Still a lot of room for confusion, especially with the names in creole. NDP should get an injunction after nominations. The name "Demokratik" has already been taken by NDP.

I thought Pierre would have to re-register the party if it changes its name. Gappy registered Popular Democratic Party not Popular Democratic Movement.

What was the point of TODAY IN SEYCHELLES reproducing that article about the AU on its front page ? The article was from an Australian newspaper and written from an Australian perspective, not from a local perspective. An article from an Australian newspaper written from an Australia perspective about Africa was, needless to say once again, full of racist overtones. TODAY IN SEYCHELLES can and should do better than that. The article was totally devoid of a Seychelles perspective and justification for being reprinted in Today and splashed across its front page. They are obviously struggling to fill up the pages of the newspaper. That is because the paper lacks investigative journalism, in case such journalism offends Parti Lepep.

Parti Lepep could also fund eTurbo News to stand as a party in the national assembly elections. Their leader can be Alain St Ange. We will ignore the fact that he endorsed James Michel at the last elections. Eturbo News is already more interested in feeding the tourist trade a diet of good news about the Seychelles government and criticisms of the opposition. ETurbo News behaves as if tourists are not interested in shark attacks off popular beaches but very interested in opposition politics which not surprisingly, given the St Ange connections, it projects in a negative light. Parti Lepep's patronage extends to eTurbo News while it fails to keep the tourist trade better informed. ETurbo News is a contaminated brand, much like much else that is associated with the Parti Lepep government and lives under its patronage and tutelage.

Anonymous said...

When the British press arrived after the English man's death from shark attack, they gave Alain St Ange a hard time because they did not think he was being honest with them. Alain St Ange, more used to one-party state journalists, did not expect to be questioned on contradictions and glaring gaps in his account of events on the shark attacks. He did not expect to see journalists asking why no action was taken after the first shark attack. He was totally unaccustomed to that and was floored. He then went on SBC, where else ?, to scold those on Praslin who were talking to foreign journalists. As if no one apart from him was supposed to talk to foreign journalists. The irony is that if French journalists had descended on Parti Lepep's government seeking answers and actions, the second shark attack may well have been avoided and the damage to Seychelles tourism image abroad avoided. Alain St Ange and Parti Lepep must take full responsibility for the damage to Seychelles image abroad caused by shark attacks. No amount of one-sided good news reporting on eTurbo News will change that. Ordinary tourists in UK do not read eTurbo News. They read in their millions the daily tabloids which have had some highly damaging reporting on the shark attacks and deaths of the French and British tourists. Alain St Ange is now a BIG liability for the tourist trade. There is a total lack of confidence in his ability to run the tourist trade and keep tourists safe.

It must have come as a rude shock for eTurbo News staff in Hawaii, as a wake-up call about the quality of reporting from and on Seychelles and as a blow to its boast for independent, global travel news to learn yesterday that the opposition forces are boycotting the national assembly elections starting at the end of this month. That was two weeks too late.

Despite the boycott’s ramifications for the tourism industry, eTurbo’s correspondents in Seychelles (Alain St Ange) and his minder based in Uganda (Wolfgang Thome) did not think the news was relevant for the overseas tourist trade. This despite the fact that one of STB’s “unique selling points” for Seychelles is the country’s political stability -- code word for a materially and politically satisfied hoi polloi who are unlikely to take their frustrations to the beaches and vent them on tourists sunning themselves there next to hungry and politically naïve sharks of yet unknown description and quantity. It has been totally irrelevant to eTurbo’s correspondents that this bubble is about to burst and St Ange’s own claptrap exposed for exactly what it is. We know from the sharks incidents that the safety of tourists is not a high priority for Parti Lepep government, until the world’s press start a brouhaha. But travel agents planning to send tourists to Seychelles and facing massive compensation claims at home for acts of negligence would disagree violently. I ignore the fact that ethical tourists might resent being sent to a place at the precise time that fake elections are being held.

Eturbo in Hawaii learnt about this key political development when its regional correspondent based in Uganda, perhaps a chum of St Ange, who knows, decided to write about the new party to contest elections. In a Ramkalawan-bashing diatribe, Thome conveniently ignored the fact that the real opposition are solidly behind the boycott but did let out that the opposition forces are boycotting the elections. His diatribe generated irate responses to eTurbo News which has now set its readers in the travel industry straight , albeit belatedly, and let them know that the much vaunted “political stability” is a myth. The stability is enforced by fear and retribution which as we see elsewhere in the world at the moment sooner or later cannot be sustained any longer. Scratch the political surface and all that … …

Wolfgang Thome says he was in Seychelles during the May elections. But he does not tell up whether Parti Lepep through STB subsidised his trip. He should know that, hoi polloi we might be, we are a sceptical nation about foreigners who sing Parti Lepep’s praises for apparently no good reason and diss the opposition for equally no good reason. We remember the discredited former French ambassador, Michel Tretout, who spent his time bad-mouthing the opposition. After he retired from the French diplomatic service, he returned to Seychelles as a businessman helped in no small measure by the Parti Lepep government. Let’s hope Thome sees where we are coming from and attaches the requisite health warning to his posts to eTurbo News. We know that Alain St Ange uses eTurbo News to promote himself. Let’s hope he is not using his chums to promote his new kind of politics.

Anonymous said...

It must be a first for eTurbo to be forced by angry readers to balance the one-sided reporting of its correspondents. People power over state-funded propaganda ! We should post to ETURBO NEWS all the local news, especially crime news, that its local correspondents think is not fit to publish on ETURBONEWS. An English translation of crime news written in Creole in NATION. I am sure ETURBONEWS would want to let its subscribers know that Joel Morgan has said that our crime rates put us in the top 20 countries in the world.

It is quite clear that despite having a party to fight the elections with them, Parti Lepep is still targeting SNP which is not taking part.

This is going to make an interesting election campaign, with both Parti Lepep and David Pierre's party (can't tell what its name will be come lunch time Monday) fighting against SNP.

Parti Lepep is not taking David Pierre's challenge seriously, giving credence to word on the street that Pierre's party is a PL clone.

It is in the gift of Parti Lepep to build up David Pierre and his party. They can make him Leader of the Opposition and they can decide how many directly elected seats he gets. Parti Lepep only has to bump off the required number of PL "ready candidates" standing against Pierre's candidates. Pierre faces humiliation in seats contested by PL and the boycott. It will be humiliating for him if there are more spoilt votes than votes for his party. The money must be very good.

The boycott is seriously troubling them. Unlike Rene, Michel has set himself up as a democrat and leader of a democracy. Seychelles has been nothing of the kind. The boycott will send this message loud and clear throughout the world. Michel will either be the dictator that he is or make genuine reforms quickly to move to democracy. In 2 or 3 years time, Parti Lepep will bring in Danny Faure and he too will ask for a decade before making small steps towards the democratisation of Seychelles. That is why the time to push Parti Lepep into genuine democratic reforms is now. Renegades stand in the way at their peril.

No one takes Pierre seriously not even himself.Party SDPD is only a party in name but does not have any credibility and it seems to be the smallest party with only the few Jj spirit cronies who were lent to Pierre in order to register his fake party.Pp aims is to have an opponent in order to be able to hold an election thus give credibility to the one party regime. But the fact is since oppostion is united ,it has literally become the majority that even if you combine pp with SPDP they will be still in the minority. Thus a claim of victory by Pp will be a victory of a one party not the people, keeping in mind that the parliament is the reprersentative of the people not the executive as Pp thinks. And the other point is how can a minority claim victory when the majority did not participate Pp-SPDPD, explain that to us?Is that what Michel defines as Democracy or does he think communism is synonym to democracy?

St Ange has politicised and messed up STB. Now he wants to politicise and mess up ETURBONEWS with highly contentious political articles whether written by himself or colleagues or not. That article had his paws all over it. He has lost his way since hooking up with James Michel and Parti Lepep in search of that elusive ministerial post. Michel obviously has got no stomach for another unprincipled turncoat in his cabinet. Dragging these sell-outs around with him on foreign junkets is the most he can stomach, especially now that he can have his pick of sell-outs with David Pierre's party. Please do not worry about David Pierre because history has proved that he has no principle and he is morally corrupt. He is now in the league where he truly belongs. Remember that no matter how hard one tries to hide, his true self will be revealed one day. His is what has happened to David Pierre. After all on record he is a failed politician who has never won any election. At least the people of Port- glaud in all their ignorance, they managed to spot the snake in the glass that the SNP leadership with all their high caliber intellectuals did not see. With lepep you can be can whatever you want to be. Now David is aspiring to be leader of opposition which he would never has realized by using his own intelligence because he is immoral and corrupt to the core. So with lepep he can be what he aspire to be through deceptions, lies and immoral deeds.
His journey on his high horse will short lived and one day, we will see him asking for forgiveness for his act of treason and by helping an evil regime to oppress a population of islanders who have the strongest desire to live in a truly democratic state where there basic rights are truly respected, that is to elect a leader without being coerce with money, baka and even drugs to vote for an undemocratic leader who is obsessed with title and self glorification. I am afraid this is what Mr. Michel is all about.
Continue to be part of JJ spirit and youth assembly my dear young brothers and sisters because you are just giving the devil the key to your home whilst you are locked inside embroiled in mediocrity and being aspired to do nothing but wanting bigger things in return without sweating.
Sad so sad but glory to captain the famous architect and captain with a ship without a rudder, a visionary leader (Mr. Rene and his coup plotters) who has taken his flocks to the desert to eat dry sand instead of the green field. Whilst he is enjoying himself with his ill-gotten riches in down under and he will surely surface just before the parliamentary election to tell us how good lepep is and his newly formed lepep2 alais party democratic popiler by the New rocket scientists David Pierre with his new approach to further rape the democratic ideals which is non existence in our country but with the recent events there was a glimmer of hope that at last the real opposition have come to their senses by not partaking in fake democracy.

The 25,000 people who voted for the opposition last time are intelligent people who think before they vote. This is borne out by the fact that they make a conscious decision not to vote for Parti Lepep. It would be so much easier not to think carefully and simply support the government. That is why I think these voters should not be underestimated. They will not vote for Pierre just because he says he is the "opposition" and the only "opposition" taking part. Pierre is underestimating the intelligence of real opposition supporters, unless he has been handsomely paid by Parti Lepep. These voters know that Pierre tried to derail their hopes of a new government in May when he left SNP in a rage and said he was going into private business. These voters will make Pierre understand that he has no business obstructing the path of democratic reforms that braver men and women than he is are forging. Dishonesty and political opportunism will not be rewarded by the sophisticated opposition electorate. Political mavericks like David Pierre will be consigned to scrap heap of history.

Why would Michel hand over the presidency to "the young generation" as suggested by Rene?
At almost 70, dying his few strands of hair, filling his sagging eyes with botox and still having a choice of the youngest females around, he considers himself god's gift to women and Seychelles. He's doing better than a ti man isn't he?
Now David Pierre will give him a run for his money as far as womanising is concerned.

David Pierre clearly has money. Lots of it.
The sums he's offering all over the place are phenomenal.
But the bigger question is: Where did he get the money? Michel? Faure? Ramados? Khalifa? Others?
Other question is: Why is any of these people pumping money into him? what are they scared of? what are they trying to prove?
Think about it and things will become clearer.

The judicial system is in turmoil and yet the Attorney General calls it a victory for Seychelles. Since when have failures been a victory for the country ?

In the recent Court of Appeal case, it seems both sides won their appeal ! The biggest losers are the judges in the constitutional courts as the judges battle it out in open warfare.

When the some judges say one thing one day, and other judges say different things the next day, how can we tell who is right and whether justice has been dispensed ?

There was no new evidence presented to the Court of Appeal, yet they came to totally different conclusions on reading one or two sentences of the constitution. Victory for Seychelles or a chaotic country ?

Govinden appealed against the decision of the constitutional court and he won. This means the decision in favour of Dhanjee is reversed and Michel wins the election in the Supreme Court. Four judges made themselves the electorate of Seychelles so that they can keep the government intact.

Dhanjee appealed against the constitutional court's failure to provide remedy, having decided in his favour, and won too. Having decided in favour of Dhanjee, the constitutional court beaks backed away from giving a remedy which would have meant postponing the presidential elections. It was an act of cowardice. Now their colleagues in the court of appeal have branded them "incompetents".

I fear there is more to come on Monday afternoon when the constitutional court gives its decisions in 3 cases. Appeals are bound to be lodged. Elections held in the meantime. Court of Appeal will later rule in favour of the government, whichever way the constitutional courts go.

What a mess !!!!!! A victory for Seychelles will mean sorting out the mess the country is in. But with James Michel in State House and with an invertebrate and compliant Court of Appeal at the gate of State House, we cannot hold our breath.

By reproducing the full opposition communique on the boycott, eTurbonews is making it quite clear that such political development is of interest to its readers in the tourism trade. It is also a slap in the face for St Ange and his co-conspirators. It is preposterous to say that Michel has broken free from the SPPF old guard. He is the old guard and he has been there since day one in 1977. Whatever integrity and credibility St Ange had when he moved to STB have been completely dissipated. He is now fit to remain alongside James Michel as long as that beleaguered regime survives. eTurbonews must know that it is now Parti Lepep government that is posting "tourism news" on its website and such "news" is hardly independent of the Seychelles government.

Really?

Having done so, wouldn't want expect to see a different Michel?
Why is it then that he's kept the SPPF mentality in every respect?

If I call you, SPPF PL communists, it is a compliment.

Gappy today acted as constitutional adviser to David Pierre's party, telling them that they need to contest all seats. Otherwise, it could affect their share of the proportional seats. As has been mentioned on STAR before, if a seat is uncontested, the day before polling, Gappy will declare the Parti Lepep candidate the candidate with all votes on the register for that candidate. I was looking forward to Parti Lepep getting 100% of all votes on the register, to hammer home the point that these are farcical elections.

More time will also be given for nominations, so that mistakes can be rectified. They are expecting a lot of mistakes from David Pierre's party. Viral Dhanjee, eat your heart out.

It seems for the the first time in the history of Seychelles, Gappy and Parti Lepep are hoping a party other than Parti Lepep does well in the elections. This is needed of course to pretend that the elections are not sham. They are probably even hoping that Kersley Raymond St Ange wins a seat. He has said he is standing. Another St SAnge who thinks he was born to be a political elite and will do whatever it takes to claim that position.

It's time for Ramka to now call it a day. Let somebody else take over the leadership & sort the party out.The more he clings on the more he's going to be humiliated.

If James Michel has any intelligence, he would feel like King Pyrrhus after these victories in his Constitutional Court. These are Pyrrhic victories achieved at great cost to the credibility of the judiciary. These victories tell us that our judges are crooks or not up to the job.

The Boycott is in place.

SNP, NDP, SFP, BOULLE and company of INDEPENDENTS are united on this platform.

The moving to multi party by F.A. Rene and SPPF in 1991, is not the issue.

What is the real issue is whether or not the SPPF now PL are genuine in their quest to entrench democratic freedoms in Seychelles.

From reading the court judgments recently, and the under handed moves to finance a ZEEDA PARTY loyal to PL, clearly, the PL are not sincere in evolving a democratic culture of freedoms in Seychelles.

I stand to strongly disagree with the blogger on the September the 5th 11.12p.m. I do not think that the court ruling is a humiliation to Mr Ramkalawan. I would have thought it is a humiliation to lawyer such as Ronny Govinden who clearly demonstrated what a pathetic lawyer he is. Doing nothing and yet pretending that he presented solid argument when everything was a fait accompli.

Secondly all these useless judges are actually reducing the court from a respected and civilised institution to a kangaroo court in a banana republic. I am afraid to say a banana republic is what Seychelles is under this sort of political climate. Who in the world apart from the cronies of Michel the Arabs would invest further in Seychelles after having seen a total mockery of the justice system. The only victor in this saga is the high echelon of Lepep party and all the opportunistic supporters but the Seychelloise as a whole who is left to be humiliated because they know how the justice system is and if they are not connected they will never win a case against their own government with this corrupt justice system. The big loser in all of this is the people of Seychelles.
The only thing that I would say against Mr Ramkalawan is that his stick that he used against Mr Elizabeth is now hitting him big time. If he had not through vengeance and arrogance broke the partnership with DP. It would have been a mere formality to win the case against Jane Carpin although I think the outcome could have been the same but that would have been the first case of this type in the constitutional court. So he forgot the great teaching of Jesus because of his ego. DO ONTO OTHERS THE WAY YOU WANT OTHERS TO DO ON TO YOU. He got the same treatment that he dispensed to Mr Elizabeth.
Food for thoughts for all of us

These elections are a farce.

I was shocked in the news (xtra bit) when i heard alian st. ange referred to the shark attacks as a minor incident. to top it all he said that in front of a British member of parliament or was it House of the lords. Anyway, that was during the opening of the new restaurent on praslin. I think that this was one of a few gaffs by him. I give him my total support for his hard work for the tourism industry but he must not get onto the same band wagon that is trying to downplay the shark issue. Choose your words correctly Mr. St. ange. Or like the saying goes, silent is golden.

I also had a lot of respect for him - until he turned into Parti lepep's propaganda Chief and forgetting that he's been given the responsibility to look after our tourism industry, outside all political considerations. He's done himself a great dis-service by wanting to be James michel's spokesman, at whatever cost.

The St. Ange train of self promotion has run out of steam.

PL will just use him for press releases.Unfortunate indeed.

He is wanted by the UK Press corps.
As long as he remains at STB now, Seychelles as a destination will be associated with shark attacks, since the press have tied St. Ange to the shark attacks.

Disaster has loomed over the shark attacks which were mis handled by government and he tried to cover up, foolishly when we should have been taking immediate measures to curtail risk.

Disaster looms over the Tourism Industry in general with allowing the licensing of Eden Island apartments as hotels, plus licensing of 200 shacks as guest houses for the election.

Disaster looms in the low occupancy of 50% nationwide which he has yet to address, which we now know is ongoing for years and years and not a one off drop.

Disaster looms in his strategy to stroke Michel's ego at the price of allowing the industry to collapse.

ZEEDA PARTY is a real disgrace for democracy. But why does Pp who cliam toal victory in the coming election wants at all cost to have a fake oppostion to take part in the elction? The answer is ,Pp is aiming at one thing, namely attempting to shore up its legitimacy badly tarnished by its recent dubious presidential victory. The reasonable idea that comes to PP's mind is to give a few seats to a fake opposition party, thereby providing some semblance of fairness to the election. To the extent that a TOTAL victory takes away all credibility from the process and ,therefore, defeats the initial purpose of the recognition. But whatever fake tactics Pp uses in its attempt to gain legitimacy, the fact is that since the result is known in advance and the united opposition has decided to boycott this fictious process, the latter will have no voice in the Assembly, thus, will result in an assembly devoid of a credible opposition generating strong debates and meaningful deliberations and thus a rubber-stamp legislative body of a one party state singing and listening to ITS SOLE MANTRA.Thisw ill also enable pp autocratic regime to continue with its selling out, patronage, corruption, lack of accountability, checks and balance as as well as sacrificng rule of law and freedom on the alter of personalized power. Conclusion, the boycott will again prove that Pp is a one aparty stae with no sign of moving towards democractisation at all.

The Communist are on a path of fraudulent electoral deeds, intended to give us and the world more importantly to them, the image of a DEMOCRACY.

The thing about FRAUD is this: once one embarks on a road of FRAUD, he /she can only cover up a FRAUDULENT ACT with another FRAUDULENT ACT.

ZEEDA PARTY is just another FRAUDULENT ACT to cover up for having no real opposition participating in the elections.

It is an act of desperation that will play itself out with all the DRAMA you would expect from a communist orgy of trampling on human dignity that is quintessential KARL MARX and STALIN Dogma.

PL have taken the position that they will choose the opposition.

This was made in a statement on National Day June 18th 2011 by James Alix Michel.

I was personally shocked that he would go out on the limb with such an overt statement in Public.

A ruling party cannot choose an opposition, it must learn to live with what it has.

By choosing a fake opposition he has sent Seychelles down into the gutters of dictatorships.

The price he will pay for acting like Khalifa, in Seychelles is to be seen. But the phones are ringing and the questions are coming in daily.

Seychelles to recognize transitional National Council of Libya
September 6, 2011 in Travel Related
(Forimmediaterelease.net) The following statement has been issued today by the Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam:

The government of Seychelles has taken steps to recognize the Resident Embassy of Libya in Seychelles as the diplomatic representatives of the Transitional National Council as the governing authority of Libya.

Following months of violence and devastation, the government feels that the Transitional National Council (TNC) authorities are the best placed to represent the interests of the Libyan people and help the country take the necessary steps to achieving democracy.

The government stands firmly by principals of democratic elections, but as Libya has no electoral mechanisms in place, it feels that, given the process should be Libyan lead, the best custodian of that progression is the TNC.

The Libyan people are faced with a humanitarian crisis and remaining difficult times ahead; in order for the international community to assist the people in a quick and decisive manner, such steps to establish diplomatic channels with the governing authorities are necessary. The government feels that delaying this process is not in the best interest of the people, and it is duty-bound to encourage the stabilization process as best it can.

The government remains steadfast in its condemnation of violence against innocent civilians and sincerely hopes that this new phase of Libya’s transition to democracy is one of peace, reconciliation, and national unity, prioritizing the needs of its people above all else.

Alain St.Ange has been in the driver’s seat, spreading the unique selling points of the islands right accross the world. He is today a respected speaker on the world circuit on tourism matters and appears on the list of impressive speakers addressing the big Aviation Routes Forum in Berlin on October 2.

Alain St Ange has an ego as huge as his tummy.
Like his masters, a lot of talk but very little action.
In case everyone has forgotten, the required outcome of any good business is YIELD or REVENUE. You can say that there are hundreds of people going in and out of your shop or restaurant but if this doesn't bring in any money, or very little, we have a problem. A big problem.
It's pointless for St Ange and his masters to give us the impression that our tourism is doing great, arrivals are up if the revenue is not there.
Stop throwing money into bottom-less pits in your marketing plan and go back to the well-tested basis.

As to the question by the last blogger-is there not a minimum requirement for anyone to be a member of the Assembly. In democracy this would be the norms,in a one party system it does not matter, what matters is that the autocratic ruling party gets credibility and recognition by fake processes, for we must keep in mind that a dictator is not in the business of bringing about change, set up norms of conduct etc... that would remove them from power,so the built up of ZEEDA fake party of shame.

As to St Ange i think he has disrespected the tourism industry and has no credibility anymore in the industry thus he must quit right now and find a life. The tourism industry is too important to let one guy child play with it just for personal achievement and his ego.Sack this albino out as representative of this industry the bread basket of our economy.
