Fraudulent Seychelles Presidential Elections - Michel wins shallow victory

The wait is over and the fraudulent results are in.  Michel has won the Seychelles Presidential election by allowing fraudulent voters who bought Seychelles passports to vote for him. See Bloomberg's report below:

May 22 (Bloomberg) -- James Michel won his third term as president of the Seychelles, securing 55.46 percent of the vote yesterday against 41.43 percent for Wavel Ramkalawan, his main opponent.
Both Michel's Parti Lepep and Ramkalawan's Seychelles National Party accused the other of bribing voters on the Indian Ocean archipelago.
About 58,000 eligible voters cast their ballot over a three-day period, out of some 69,000 registered voters. Voting was extended to allow people on outlying islands the chance to participate.
Michel has been in office since 2004 after replacing the People's Party socialist leader France Albert Rene, who came to power in a coup in 1977. Michel was re-elected in 2006 with 53.7 percent of the vote against the 45.7 percent won by Ramkalawan.

What Bloomberg failed to say was that the 3 other candidates boycotted the result announcement and decided to stay away from the farce of an announcement by Electoral Commissioner Hendrick Gappy, one of the kingpin behind the fraudulent election. Ramkalawan, Volcere and Boulle all refused to wait around for the results of an election which was fixed well before the first ballot was cast.  It is now up to the international observers to file their meaningless reports that will state the elections were "free and fair".

In summary, this election was as far away from free and fair as can ever be imagined. Michel won with manipulation, illegal money and more importantly, by allowing illegal and ineligible Seychellois to vote.  Seychelles is truly doomed for 5 more years while the country is raped by Arabs, Russians, Indians and Chinese. The corruption will simply continue on Monday morning under Ramados, Dolor, Savy, Adam and the rest of the thieving gangs who will return to robbing the people of Seychelles.

STAR warned for months that this election would be fraught with corruption.  Christopher Gill called for a boycott of this sham election many weeks ago, but no one listened. Maybe now the politicians and opposition members will wake up to this battle cry.

That's the risk. All strategies carry risk. Will the puppet party get enough votes to get into the assembly ? If the puppet party does not get into the assembly, there will be no leader of the opposition. Unless they get some PL MNAs to cross the floor !

It is obvious that some of us need to thank Mr Christopher Gill for this blog space that allows people to voice their discontentment about the elections result and the corruptions encompassing it and the lack of commonsense.
It is not about C.Gill it is about lack of insight and weakness of every single person that allows such event to be left unaccountable.
I feel as if I'm in a circus and the clown is having a field day.

dear Mr. Gill,
I am sick and tired of all your racist talk about us Indians and Chinese in seychelles!
We did not arrive in seychelles illegally, on the back of a lorry or a stowaway on a boat, but we were invited here, by your govt, to work, as you seychelloise, are lazy, incompetent, stupid monkeys! Blame your president, if you don`t want us here!
Us indians, have an ocean named after us ( the ocean you live in), have a civilzation of thousands of years, religion,( hinduism sikhism) culture ( yoga, kama sutra ), history, some of the greatest men in modern history ( gandhi) sportsmen ( tendulkar - cricket world champions ) are all Indian...and what do you seychelloise have...nothing..just monkies and bananas!
when you seychelloise want money, where do you go, cap in hand too...to india and china and beg for money...when you catch your bus ( tata ) or eat your dinner ( curry ) just remember who gave that to you!
Some of the most succesful and respected men in your country today, are of indian - chinese heritage, Patel, Shah,Pillay, Pardiwalla, Chang Him, Shamlye, Chang sam etc...we come here, work here and achieve more in 2 or 3 generations that the whole of you seychelloise monkeys who have lived here for hundreds of years!
don`t hate us cause we are better!
In india, we also have corrupt leaders, but we protest, we have people who will die for India ( suicide bombers ) and their cause..here, you have stupid monkeys...
if you are lucky, an indian will run for president in the next 10 years for seychelles and we will ask mother India to annex you..
You seychelloise, are so insignificant, the world does not care about you, your elections, or your people..99.9% of the worlds population do not even know that you exist or where you are on the globe!
0.000001% of the world speak your monkey language, which is coincidentally spoken by only Haiti ( poorest country in th western hemisphere - another monkey country ) and New Orleans..even George Bush does not care about you creoles Re Hurrican Katrina ( ask Kanye west )..
when you mix Indian with white, with black, or chinese, you get a beautiful baby, when you mix seychelloise with seychelloise you get a stupid ugly monkey ( rene, michel etc )...

Long Live INDIA....

An excerpt of a letter from a friend in UK

Thanks for the info. Even me I was shocked particularly by the fact that the opposition votes have gone down rather than increase after all the scandals that has taken place before the election. You would think that the Seychellois people this time would have seen the light but many of my borthers and sisters are still in the dark. This is a clear case of mental slavery to the core. it has become evident now the the SPPF's grip on power will never end. They are infect a modern day monarchy passing power to members of the same political party. The only way forward for Seychelles is our own version of the "Arab Spring". By election not in a thousand years because every election they play the same old tricks. I guess it would have been a good idea for all the opposition parties to boycott the election.

The SPPF has created a trap for all those people in Seychelles who are politically immature. They have created a structure which made people heavily dependent on them and in return this earned them votes. This is bad for the country because it creates a generation of wasted talents and turned people into lazy unproductive being and i suspect that this will have a serious repercussion for the future.

hese are times uncertainties and its very easy for people to get attracted by material gains particularly all those whose morale foundation is weak or is open to temptation. All of us who wants to see a democratic Seychelles where human rights are respected, wealth is distributed equally, transparency and accountability becomes the order of the day will weep because these still remains elusive dreams.

The statement put out by the opposition is good. It is however limited to what happened during the campaign and voting days, presumably to avoid accusations of bad losers. Going forward, the case must be more comprehensive and include everything that prevents free and fair elections, despite the fact that we have ignored these things in the past and participated in elections. It is not just protesting about the 2011 elections, but future elections too. We may have accepted SPPF and PL malpractices in the past and participated in elections, but it does not mean we have to continue doing so, especially as the malpractices were more blatant this time.

More Narcissus press release from STB - news on Alain St ange written by Alain St Ange. Details of his encounters at the Lusaka conference are being spread over several press releases over several days, for maximum exposure of Alain St Ange. Our tourism CEO has turned self-publicist extraordinaire. If he joins the cabinet, he'll be competing head-on with James Michel in the Narcissus stakes.

COi and La Francophonie statement does not refer to free and fair elections.

It says the result reflects the choice of those who voted. They can't be sure that no one voted under pressure. What they are saying is that the result reflects who people voted for in the polling booths. That is the counting was accurate and no ballot papers went missing. As Ramkalawan said, it is an African approach to election. As long as ballot boxes do not go missing, the result is credible. This is not the same as saying the election of James Michel was free and fair. This would require a lot more work from the observers and they are not there for that.

The International Observers need to change their thinking and evalutaion process.
everything seems calm and quite.

Come on - Open up the evaluation, observation beyond these few days and look deepth into the structures and mechanisms that bribes people from years before election and issues of a legitimate voting list.

If the opposition boycott the national assembly elections, the observers will miss their jollies to Seychelles. Even Gappy let it slip on election night that they were here to enjoy themselves.

However, while saying that people voted for James Michel they have complained about our democratic shortcomings. Together with an opposition boycott, it will put a dampener on the swearing-in ceremony this afternoon.

seychelles is a bankrupt state. lepep will reform if and if only we can lobby internation institution to put pressure on that dictatorship which has use one of the tool in democracy which is voting to legitimize dictatorship in seychelles.

These observers know better than me that there are three processes involve in election observation. That before, during and after an election. They came when Gappy had already baked his cake already to eat and now they are telling us that Gappy used the right ingredient to bake the cake.

Please the invites us of Gappy and Michel get real and try not to be an accomplice in the enslavement of the Seychelles people by a ruthless dictator.

No matter what we do and cry about, the bottom line is money, money and money. Whoever, is time rich and financially sound can take SPPF/PP head on. I hope RAM is time rich for him NOT to SLEEP ON THE JOB over the next 5 years. He needs to work out a good strategy to beat SPPF/PP at their own game. I am not sure if he has the financial backers to help him fight this noble cause.

I can offer some of my time to advise RAM or any other with ideas. Let me start by giving you a flavour.

IDEA NO: 1

You should be advising some of your vulnerable supporters to apply for a replacement ID Card NOW, explaining that their original one is lost or retained by SPPF/PP activist. That way they will have 2 ID Cards. At the next election, they can deposit one ID Card with the SPPF/PP activist who will 'prevent them from voting' in exchange for say SCR10,000 or even SCR5,000 as was the case at this election.

On election day the voters can do exactly as they did this time round, ie collect their payment from SPPF/PP in exchange for one of their ID Card. They will still have their spare ID Card to exercise their right to Vote.

Employing this tactic will teach SPPF/PP a lesson.

The game has just started you need to fight fire with fire.

I see no-one responded to the "Dear Mr Gill" letter. Apart from using racial tones it is very true what the person wrote, however just to imply to both writer & Mr Gill - If he did make racist comment re indians and chinese - The Seychelles were un-inhabited when 1st discovered. The Europeans came with the slaves, then the Chinese came trading materials and the Indians came trading spices. That is the mixture from the very start that makes up the Seychellois. And we fall under the African continent. Don't get it twisted people. Too late though eh!!

Our Country is bleeding and suffering great pain. Freedom has lost a battle, and our mountains burn by arsonists who have run out of ideas and express their frustration.

SNP leadership cannot even take a good lesson and follow it. Half its executive and key supporters joined SPPF PL in protest to Ramkalawan leadership.

At the end of a campaign, they said Sesel Pou Seselwa! But they do not understand what this means.

NDP is a prehistoric apparatus from days when I was a child. We need new ideas, new way of doing things.

I am not interested in negotiating with SNP for position. SNP is has nothing to offer at this point. As these fires burn, I would not be seen next to SNP leadership, who told us on STAR they will burn the mountains. The mountains are burning! What example do we give our young?

Anyone who wants to help form a new party and has the courage to face down communism in Seychelles can show up at Docklands No. 16 ex- MSR office to form Seychelles Freedom Party. We need freedom, so that is the name of the party. MSR has educated us of our rights, now SFP will convert the education into reality.

I ask all used by date expired politicians in the opposition who have now failed us, to give us a chance to put the energy of the young in the right place, with the best intentions, to bring change to Seychelles.

Politicians failed us, not supporters who fail politicians. When politicians talk just about money and forget about Freedom, what example do they give their followers?

Then you ask why SNP fails? Why NDP fails?

Rise above the mess, put your best foot forward for Seychelles.

I think the opposition needs a new breath of fresh air.We must all admit that Wavel has done a good job by giving birth to democracy(swadizan)in Seychelles.Although i must admit that we are not living it fully, but at least the LP have not been able to do what they want.I commend Wavel for that. However,i feel there are some discouragement setting in and the party needs a new torch bearer.Wavel should stay within the structure as a mature politician but i guess somebody else should step in e vin met en lord enkou.I guess the ideal candidate is one that LP will have absolutely nothing to say about, and a leader with Principle and intelligence who will have the ability to display good governance. My ideal candidate would be Mr.Philip Boulle. That guy spoke only in 3 PPB's for the election and got almost a thousand votes.Have we asked ourselves why??Because 'bien koze, fer bien konpran'.We need a leader who can inspire the opposition supporters,a leader who can inspire those who chose not to go down and vote,a leader who can inspire those who made the mistake of selling their votes. The opposition must unify and review their structure. One that is based on good principles.LP wins the election because they have a solid structure. It doesnt mean that all of them in that structure is happy, but none of them will step down and turn against LP,jamais.Unlike SNP,they step down after so many years and jump on the LP boat.Me selman lets get one thing clear, when you are born a WOLF you will die a WOLF.Even if you try to turn yourself into a sheep it will not work.Because at the end of the day a WOLF will never be comfortable amongst sheeps. It will try and find its way back to its pack or it will get loss.
WE NEED A UNITED OPPOSITION WITH A NEW TORCH BEARER.The oppostion failed again this time because despite having one common aim, they remained devided and a big chunk of their supporters chose not to vote.
I still believe that Philip Boulle is the the best candidate for the job,but that will depend on his willingness,of course.Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Michel just stood before foreign observers and said they said that the electoral process was true and fair. They have said nothing like that. They said the result was credible. He lied to them just after swearing in.

Anonymous said...

Gill, you sound like PL. Is it responsible to blame SNP for the arson ? How do you know ?

Anonymous said...

What you are saying about Mr Boulle is ok? But he does not know that so i wil suggest opposition supporters write a petition and formally ask him to either form his own party since there is no indication that the SNP structure will change and this gesture will get him to put himself forward to present himself as a formiable opponent for against LP in the years to come. Intelligent Seychelloise will not have any problem with Mr Boulle since he has demonstrated that he is a man of integrity and sound moral principle.

Anonymous said...

It is clear that Michel needs a credible opposition in the country. He will need to make changes, if the opposition is to take part in elections again. Even China seems to think uncontested elections are necessary. Its official news agency says Seychelles has just had uncontested elections. It spoke too soon.

I am afraid Mr Gill that some of your comments will never help your cause as many intelligent Seychelloise will see you as a divisive figure. It seems to me that you are trying to use the same strategy that Wavel use to become popular by attacking his opponent in the opposition instead of getting him to change his ways. Sorry we do not want Albert Rene style of politic in the Seychelles. The Seychelles deserve good leader that respect his opponents and compete on principles rather than person attack and vindictiveness.
I personally think that you should stop attacking Wavel and bring forward your agenda for your cause . This is what a leader with wisedom and vision would do

His speech today was full of platitudes and usual shite.

Mr C Gill, you are dividing the opposition further with your ideas of forming NFP. You should work towards uniting Seychelles National Party to form the Seychelles National Freedom Party. SNFP. This will get us to our objective of freeing Seselwa a lot quicker than forming a new party. Remember - United we Stand, Divided we Fall.

I have said this before, and I am repeating myself again.
Bright guys like yourself, Boulle and Wavel should find common ground to work together.

If any of you three can engineer such a coalition, it will be SPPF/PP worst nightmare.

Gill's problem is easy to see. He wants to be the leader of the opposition. He can't do this through SNP. He needs a new party, hoping opposition supporters will flock to him. It's delusion. The message from this election is that at least 40% will always support SNP to remove PL. A further 5% will support SNP if it is the only opposition party around.

I wish PL and Gappy had allowed Gill to register MSR. Gill would today be counting the number of votes he got on the fingers of his hands. Now, we have 5 years of Gill pretending to us that he has popular support. Either Gill is leading the opposition, or Gill will try to destroy SNP. If his Seychelles Freedom Party aspires to be the government one day, it should target PL.

PL has issued a statement in response to Ramkalawan ad Volcere's press conference. They are taking the boycott of national assembly elections and the absence of opposition in the national assembly very seriously. Of course there will always be an opposition outside the national assembly.

Having decided to dispute the 2011 election outcome and withdrawn from the national assembly, the opposition faces difficult times ahead. Wavel Ramkalawan is the one with the determination, conviction and bravery to lead us ahead.

Anonymous said...

We know Boulle and Volcere can muster some 800 votes each. They deserve to be listened to by SNP. We do not know why Boulle was not at the press conference, although he signed the press release. Gill cannot show that he has any support, apart from his political activists. The problem with the opposition is that too many people want to dictate tactics. We must trust Wavel to listen and then decide what to do. We must trust his judgement in the difficult times ahead.

Anonymous said...

I agree to the last two blogs. Mr Gill, Boulle & Volcere needs to find a way of working with SNP rather than cloud the political landscape further little parties.

Have you people ever thought that Wavel has reached the end of his political lifespan is now a liability to the opposition. Whilst I respect his work and what he has done, I do not see how he can change things after being given the opportunity to do so for 20 years.

Just look at the evidence:

1. The SNP is an internal mess with their key people defecting or bought off. What does this tell us about Wavel's leadership? IF he cannot keep these egos in his party on a leash and to show some loyalty how can he run a country?

2. Wavel has run out of ideas. That is why for every 5 years of the past 20 years, the SPPF/PL has treated him like a meek lamb to the slaughter house. And this time it was a massacre. Whilst knowing full well that the sppf is buying people, using the sbc and state resources to gain an unfair advantage, he STILL participates in the shame process and LEGITIMIZES the whole thing. its time he stops playing the sppf's game.

The problem with people in the opposition and the current bunch of leaders show that they are all opportunistic individuals looking after their own interests. St Ange took his bug job and is now happily globe-trotting abd suddenly everything is fine. David Pierre acted like a spoilt brat, throwing his toys out of the pram just because he was not nominated. PEOPLE, ITS NOT ABBOUT YOU. If you were serious about seychelles and sincere, you would do whatever it takes to stay united and fight PL. Wavel and the rest took their fat salaries whilst they could have shown solidarity with the people of seychelles during the hard times. BAD JUDGEMENT.

Boule is intelligent enough not to form a party because he knows he cannot alone attract the support to win. that is why he is talking of government of national unity. Boule is from the old school and comes across as elitist. Come on, the guys walks in the street as if he is doing the pavement he is walking on a favour and completely ignores passers by. HOw can you get the drunk at Baie lazare to identify with someone like that and vote for him? VOlcere is new in the game. he has done well with Weekly and maybe he should be given time to show his worth. Gill I feel is too heavily tainted; floor crossing, dabbling with fascist ideas but he comes across as the most intelligent. He would be a brilliant background strategist but his ego is too big, he wants his credit. anyway, these are my humble thoughts-but i agree with you all; somehow because these people have put themselves forward, they should find a way to work together for the common cause. if they realise its not about them but seychelles, then we could move forward.

Bolot and all

What division can you have more than is already there my dear friend (s)! Things evolve and grow. When they shrink or decline. Its time to rethink, rebrand, repackage .. Yes, it may initially divide or sub-divide, but it would stand a greater chance and opportunity to expand and grow. It will bring the UNITY we all want.

Sorry, old players and old strategies will simply not work as I alerted since last year. We are hungry for a new approach.

Secondly, C. Gill is calling for this new party SFP, he is leading the process, but lets get our facts right. He has not declared that he is the legitimate leader. We all know this has to be formalised through normal participation and voting proces.

Furthermore, SNP was not born out of nothing. SNP also inherited the benefits of a fragmented opposition. Am i right!! What do you think!. Well, if we do not give it a try, we will never know.I am certain about one thing.

INNOVATIION.

C. Gill has also learned some lessons as the leader of MSR. As we see, it is very strategic of him to quickly put the past behind. MSR to SFP. This is clear that this guy is solid and has learned. I admire this move. He needs to me cautious and tactful as I have explained several times before.

I strongly endorse his proposal for a new party.

The new Seychelles Freedom Party SFP.

Anonymous said...

One idea-why dont the snp hold an election for the post of leader amongst its supporters? Or why not under the umbrella of a new party like C Gill is proposing, Gill, wavel, volcere and boule sumbit their names and let people vote for the person they think have the best ideas to lead the opposition? If wavel wins, it will give him the legitimacy to remain as leader and get PL off his back and those like me who feels he should call it day. on the otherhand, if people feels Gill is the best bet, then the opposition should rally behind him and all the others pledge their loyalty and support. whoever wins,, should be given the opportunity to deliver. My personal choices are between Gill and Volcere but i will favour Gill because he is more insightful, has the intellect, charisma and with some PR can rebrand himself and his message. Gill needs to find stability and stop re-inventing himself continuously just to address changing circumstances. This confuses people. But he can only get the legitimacy if the SNP leadership puts Seychelles above itself and give its supporters to democratically elect someone to lead the opposition. this way, there would be no internal bickering that has caharacterised the party over the last 5 years.

hahaha watching SBC. You have to give it to PL-interviewing all 3 candidates and they gullibly stated everything was going fine and people should respect the results. come on guys, did you not see this coming? I think this shows POOR JUDGMENT from all 3 concerned and they are now coming across as sore losers. Like i said, at least Gill has shown evidence of understanding what sort of animal he is up against and will have the means to fight fire with fire. The last sentence should not be taken literally by the way!!

Anonymous said...

There is an easy solution to all this. It is a fact that the SNP remains and will remain the most viable opposition to Pl and the only realistic chance of removing them from power.

But there should be a change of leadership in the SNP. This however leaves a power vacuum. Who can fill the post? I am certain that most opposition supporters are not looking for an Obama or some super-politician to lead them. People will vote for someone who has a realistic chance of defeating PL. That is why VOlcere and Boule whilst presenting good ideas had few votes. C Gill is a person that could fill the vacuum. He should eat some humble pie in the short term, put his ego aside and JOIN the SNP. As a member, he can influence things. Can SNP reject his membership? They can but can they afford to do so? If they do so, it will be at their own peril because they will forever remain the party who got close but never closed the deal. Gill can better influence things inside SNP. NO need to form any new party or re-invent the wheel. The apparatus is there and he should use it. Get in there Gill and show them what is needed. Present your candidature for leadership and push for a democratic election within the party. If wavel is serious and does not want to come across as a power hungry maniac or someone whose time has come, he should at least give opposition supporters the opportunity to pronounce itself on his leadership. Many people, we should remember, do not like Wavel, but voted for him because he had a credible and realistic chance of winning and changing the present system.

Anonymous said...

The leaders voted early and had no idea what PL planned to do during the day. What we saw -- e.g. the check points and questioning of voters -- was totally unacceptable. You can call it the straw that broke the camel's back.

SBC should stop playing games. It has been roundly condemned by all groups of observers, not for the first time. Don't the people there have any self-respect and professionalism ?

Anonymous said...

Gill is damaged goods, with his seselwa rasin stuff. Too late to reinvent himself. The opposition will lose support.

I think it is time to start a national campaign of boycotting the SBC. There should be stickers, posters, songs etc to make it an object of ridicule and thus reveal it as the garbage that it is. Once something becomes an object on ridicule, it loses all legitimacy. And people working there should also be targeted, not physically, but to make them think whether it is worthwhile being seen as imbeciles and puppets by the population. Everyone will laugh at a good joke, we should make the SBC the joke.

Anonymous said...

Gill is damaged goods, with his seselwa rasin stuff. Too late to reinvent himself. The opposition will lose support.

You are right and I agree. But the same thing can be said of Wavel. Given the right means to express himself, he can put a spin on this whole stuff. The basic point after all with seselwa rasin is that we have allowed PL to define the message-the core is basically that sesel pou seselwa; now how different is that to what albert rene was preaching?

SBC's coverage of the press conference yesterday was good. They did what they should do -- hold the political leaders to account, ask the tough questions.

What is regrettable is that they do not ask James Michel and PL Ministers tough questions -- they ask "bon kestyon". There's the shame.

James Michel did not look like the cocky over confident dude that he's been for the past 7 years for his swearing in this evening. A very subdued "President", no doubt conscious that "son pep" is more divided than ever before, despite his so-called "resounding victory".I will wait and see what he proposes CONCRETELY to re-unite this small nation. I know he's good at reading speeches that written by Alain Butler-Payet. I'll see whether he can also walk the talk.

And did anyone see Danny Faure licking his lips waiting for his day at the podium when he will become president? In fact, he has been training with Albert Rene and already, his belly is fatter than Albert's. Time for an IMF diet Danny boy.

one fundamental point that should be considered by all. What is the core difference between the SNP, NDP, Boulle and MSR/NFP(Gill)?

THERE IS NONE

I think all advocate the same things and if they cannot offer anything that is uniquely theirs, then then put ideological considerations aside and unite behind one apparatus for the common cause, put the egos aside and pool their resources together to fight PL. It is the least they can do at this juncture for the opposition supporters who wait for the day for its leaders to show some maturity, tact and sense of purpose and provide real and effective leadership and direction.

Anonymous said...

The opposition has one common aim and that is defeating the PL.However it will not happen if they remain undivided. We must have sincere politician joining the bandwagon. What i mean, politician who believe that real freedom is needed in the country,BUT without high expectation that once this is achieved they should be rewarded. We should never aim for a Santa Claus style opposition. If im not getting a gift at the end of the day im out of here.I mean, just think of the almost 26,000 opposition supporters who has been voting all along, they did so because they want a free seychelles.Ler nou rod semen pase nou bezwen rod pou tou seselwa.
We need guys who are sincere and will put the party before self.A credible torch bearer with sound moral principles.
I dont believe that people who has been jumping here and there can be called credible. You just dissapointed your supporters in the process and although you will try and justify it,people will have no respect for you.
The guy heading STB,chose to dedicate his time, set politic aside and take the opportunity he was offered to go and sort out the mess in the Tourism industry.Opposition and PL supporters alike will agree he is doing a great job.We have seen positive signs in this area.See what i mean. But in the process he didnt write letters/join PL in rallies and criticise SNP.Those are the kind of person i respect as a leader.Because they are true to themselves. As long as we create an opposition where some people expect to be well rewarded if we win the election but if this is taking too long to happen then they jump where they think they would be better off and try and sink the ship they used to sail that far then we must seriously re-think our aims as politicians.
We need a new torch bearer who can step in for a while only,to create an impact, get the job done and then step aside and watch things unfold.

Anonymous said...

sorry i meant they should remain UNDIVIDED.

Anonymous said...

The post above I believe has hit the nail on the head. The job ahead is to save Seychelles. Noone should feel that they are going after or that they are entitled to a trophy. The political arena is such that this is not going to be a trophy but "en pwalon tre so". This is not a jab at Mr. Ramkalawan but I could not think of a more descriptive statement to emphasise the situation.

Anonymous said...

Last blogger - You've made some very valid points that I agree with. However, I strongly disagree with your comments about "the man at STB". I agree that he's done some good work. Nothing spectacular, but good. But knowing where he comes from, can you tell me what he's done to help the party? Didn't he end up being a 5th column by participating in James Michel's PPB? Did ambition get the better of him because HE believed that he should be the party's presidential candidate or was he bought? I personally think that it's a bit of both. It's sad because today, as Ramkalawan prepares to retire, he could have been an ideal candidate to take over the leadership of the party. Now his credibility is nil and he's keep panting and waiting for a ministerial position from James which will never happen.

Anonymous said...

Looks like it will be a long wait for the ministerial job. I notice Peter Sinon was the first to jump up to cheer Michel after he ended his speech. He must be feeling insecure. The speech by the way was totally uninspiring. I do not believe a word he said. Michel knows he cannot connect with 45% of the population who can't be bought off.

Time for blaming should come to an end

Old guards deserve great credit but they must recognise their time is over. They have struggled against a beast that transforms and devours people with good intentions and hearts.

But, they can help towards a new approach

C. Gill has or shoudl learn from some previous mistakes as I indicated several times earlier. Overall, being cautious and tactful is needed.

I call for 5 strategies

1. Strategy 1
Quick, swift and decisive move to form the new SEYCHELLES FREEDOM PARTY SFP –All Invited-the goal is focus on the next parliamentary election to start with.

2. Strategy 2
Contest at the highest level internally and externally- involving SADC, Common wealth, European Union of how to improve the election and voting system. It should be a condition for technical and financial aid. If this fails, strategy 3 should be effected at a national scale.

3. Strategy 3

General boycott of upcoming parliamentary election if 2 is not addressed in any way. They need to be pressured from all sides. We know they depend heavily on foreign aid. By now most or close to all their resources must have reached the bottom of the barrel. Watch for another grant from UAE or China soon. As someone mention earlier> NO PARTICIPATION if these demands are not satisfied.

4. Strategy 4
Find who are the 10,000 people that did not casts their votes and why? How can they be influenced to cast their vote? These individuals are probably not part of the people that seeks out for short term benefits. I assume many of them remained more undecided and uninterested base on the assumption things will simply never change. If we can target these 10,000 people James Michel will hang in a net. From the parliament, major changes can be proposed and implemented. I think having a common United Party will largely tackle this issue.

5. Strategy 5
How can the so many Seychellois living abroad be encouraged to come and cast their vote in the Seychelles? What can be the incentive!

Anonymous said...

If we were running a democratic state as party le Fes declares, we as the opposition would be allowed to have a demonstration. The last time we did one we were teargas and shot, this prove that there is no democracy whatsoever and this is the only way where we could express our opinion by having a legal peaceful demostration. Because we can't is this not proof that we are not in a democratic state. Instead it is still one party state since June 1977. We need to hear the voice of the opposition and let us be united for once.

Anonymous said...

No foreign leaders accepted their invitation to attend the controversial swearing-in ceremony which was boycotted by opposition MNAs. I assume Mancham is overseas and that's why he was not there. It is probably too much to think he was sitting at Glacis-sur-mer reflecting on how he failed the people of Seychelles with the 1993 constitution that he stitched together with Rene. Still no conclusive proof that Rene was in the country on election day. Michel thanked him for his support. Wonder what he meant by that ?

Michel must know that he bought this election.

Anonymous said...

Gill, no one is going to join your Freedom party of MSR because you crossed the floor. If you had participated in this election, you would have come last. So stop denigrading the others and support the other opposition politicians who have a real chance to bring freedom to Seychelles.

Anonymous said...

Regarding the number of people who did not vote. This figure has gone up.

The Electoral Commissioner has no mechanism for removing dead people from the electoral register. The system relies on someone challenging the name of someone on the register.

Think about this, before we devise a strategy to target so-called non-voters. Many of them are at Mont Fleuri cemetery. Or before we assume that there are thousands of potential opposition supporters who are disgruntled and prefer not to vote.

Anonymous said...

True-Lets find out about the dead people on the list.

Surely, the system of SPP must have tendered people to be opposive and perhaps even passionately negative. I know that.

But, let us be humble, objective and positive. This could be the sixth Strategy, that needs to be added.

Anonymous said...

On the issue of strategies. Gill crossed the floor yes but don't you see by the reaction of the sppf at the time that they recognised this for what it was? That it was just pure frustration on the part of Gill and way of getting back at mancham's stupidity over the DP's leadership? Mancham is responsible for destroying democracy in seychelles and judging by his words and actions he has no idea what he was up against in rene, sppf and michel. Gill did well to distance himself from such a buffoon because just look at the state of the DP/NDP today. Guys, it would take someone incredible to lose the support of the number of people who came at the airport to welcome the guy back. Someone incredible stupid like mancham.or maybe not, for he has everything that he lost and is now sitting on his ass at Glacis writing crap about how a great statesman he is and who he has breakfast with.

Anonymous said...

Re strategy 5. They have to be in Seychelles for the 3 months before the register is open for registration every January. Then they have to convince the Electoral Commissioner they have resettled in Seychelles for good, and have not come simply to register.

Those who are working abroad can't get 3 months off work. They may not have a job to go back to when they return abroad. Plus, there is no guarantee Parti Lepep will not successfully challenge their registration.

The solution is to give them the right to register and vote, either abroad or in Seychelles. Voting in London or Paris will be cheaper to organise than voting in outlying islands. It will be a tough fight.

Anonymous said...

IF the opposition participates in the Assembly elections, here is the way to do it.

1. Forget about the innerislands/outer islands.

2. Forget about POrt Glaud, Anse BOileau, Poite Larue and the likes. It is a waste of time and efforts to talk to people who refuse to listen to common sense.

3. Just go for 15 districts. Pour all the resources in these districts and find the best candidates, whether it is from SNP, NDP, BOulle or Gill to stand.

But of course, there can be candidates in all districts but this is just to allow opposition supportes there to vote but real campaigning should be limited to 5 districts with the aim of getting the assembly.

It will take the minority people of seychelles who seek for a better day to lead the blind. we cannot expect and wait for the stubborn and die-hard core sppf supporters to see the light. by then it will be too late.

Anonymous said...

on the issue of overseas voters. i dont know what other people feel about this but i personally see it this way. IF those overseas have the interest of seychelles at heart and want to contribute, then do lkie volcere, Gill, Chow and others-RETURN HOME. But whilst they are still working and living abroad, I dont think they should influence seychelles politics. When victory and freedom comes to seychelles, let it be known that is was won FAIRLY, FREELY AND OPENLY. Not like the sham victories of james michel abd PL.

SOme have mentioned how MIchel looks. Well, he knows how he got elected. what is the worth of winning knowing you have cheated and all around you know so?

So, do not give PL any excuse to say opposition won with overseas voters. Let us do it here with people who are living here and suffering

Just read on FB that Paul Chow had advised Wavel that the only way to beat Michel is for Wavel to run under JRM as candidate. Does JRM really expect us to do all the work for him while he fraternises with Michel to our demise, and then run around to promote him....Cannot believe this coming from Paul Chow.

Anonymous said...

The perosn who said to focus on the potential district is very right. He mentioned 15. I agree and support him.

This would be the 7th Strategy towards Freedom.

Startegy 7. Focused campaign in districts with less than for example 2-5% difference.

Anonymous said...

Thats a good start in the broadder context of strategy 3

http://www.seychellesweekly.com/May%2023,2011/top_press_release_opposition.html

Very soon James Michel will offer and invite someone to the state house. Be very careful of the beast.

Anonymous said...

Somewhere amongst these strategies should be something concerning the media/SBC.

SPPF has it in their blood that they have to control people's minds. It is part of their communist crap and is called indoctrination.

Someone mentioned discrediting SBC by a campaign. This should be considered. Like the person said, make SBC a national object of ridicule;end result it loses all credibility and respect.

It would be nice to go back but just because we're abroad does not mean we're Millionaires. How will we live?? On air??
If however i was to win the EuroMillions for example, I'm coming down to open the new Independent Radio station.

For the national assembly, every vote counts because it determines proportional members. This means fighting all districts.

Can't some of the opposition move away from such places ? They should go and live where the opposition is vulnerable -- Bel Ombre, Mont Fleuri etc

Anonymous said...

The Seychellois living and working abroad have stronger attachments to Seychelles than the recent immigrants to Seychelles. The new immigrants are likely to vote for the government whatever it is, as they have no reason to vote for change and the opposition.

Anonymous said...

I agree and fully understand your point Brigitte. Living overseas is another hardship.

This is why we need to put pressure to improve the electoral system. This implies if SPP will not allow people living overseas to vote, then we sould call that the number of months people to be residing in the Seychelles be reduced. This is part of strategy 2.

On the otherhand,I also think there is no result without some sacrifice.Ghandi spent a lot of time in pain, Mandella also in prison. Recently, in Egypt people slept for days in tents in the main square and many lost everything. In Libya, the people are struggling and we know the daily sacirfices. No one in Seychelles have to die for freedom . However, if we are not prepared to do some financial minimum sacrifice, I am afraid we will suffer for many years to come.

The choice is between permanent finacial sacrifice or short term sacrifice.

Chow is perusing the election results to find brickbats to throw at Ramkalawan. Some of the conclusions he is drawing from the results are perverse.

He takes a dig at Ramkalawan and says that Anse Etoile (where Michel overturned the SNP majority) had the biggest increase in Michel's votes and the highest number of spoilt votes.

That may well be the case. But it is wrong to draw the conclusion that Anse Etoile voters deserted Wavel Ramkalawan, as Chow is implying.

Ramkalawan actually increased his vote at Anse Etoile -- one of five districts where this happened.

There was an increase of 364 voters at Anse Etoile and Michel got most of those votes. We need to work out why. Can they all be first time voters ? Over 20% of the increase in voters was at Anse Etoile. Bel Ombre too had a sizeable increase in number of voters.

SNP needs to pay attention to demographic changes in districts where it had a majority in 2007 national assembly elections.

Anonymous said...

The opposition has been fighting for every vote in every districts for 20 years. Where has this taken us? Resounding defeats after resounding defeats in the western regions and other places. Surely this approach cannot go on. Getting people to move whilst a good idea will not work because the Electoral Commissioner is in league with PL and will simply not register these people. Come election day, they will be told there is a mistake and they are registered in their old districts and will have to vote there.

Targeted campaigning stands a better chance of succeeding because my friends, there are some people in Seychelles who simply refuses to listen to common sense and will vote against their interests simply because Pl asks them to do so. A case in point is La Misere residents. From what can be seen, their district gave Pl a resounding victory. Do people have to eat shit to see sense?

Anonymous said...

Michel lost 32 votes at Grand Anse district where La Misere residents vote. Ramkalawan gained an extra 35 votes and Volcere got 25 votes. Boulle gained an extra 6 votes. That does not suggest La Miisere residents affected by water contamination voted for Michel. We just do not know the reasons for the changes.

Anonymous said...

The way I see it we should have been doing more for ourselves here and like the person said, sacrifices is called. Unfortunately, whilst some people have sacrificed their blood there is a more we could have done without shedding blood.

The radio station is a case i point. What is this licence worth? 1 Million rupees?

Guys, SNP had 20 years to raise money for that. SPPF will never change the law so use their own law to beat them. What about fund-raising for this project? Local and international? SNP publishes Regar-is this a personal business or for a fund-raising instrument? There are rich individuals here willing to contribute. We need new approaches. A fundamental re-think is needed this time. Like Vlcere pointed out doing the same things over and over expecting the same results is idiotic (Einstein rather)

Anonymous said...

Of course we do not know the reasons for the changes at La misere. But you would have expected if there was to be a shift in Seychellois thinking and voting pattern, this would have been the catalyst. La Misere should have shifted big time if people were willing to say a resounding no to James Michel and people do not seem to be voting on principles and by the realities around them, so i see no evidence for pursuing these 'futile' districts in Assembly elections

Anonymous said...

I believe Ramkalawan got it right this time-boycott all elections until changes are made for a fairer and level playing field. He should go further, he should boycott the Judiciary (no more filing of cases before the courts) and the Police force.

Anonymous said...

This is indeed true,it will take a lot of hard work to get the deeply rooted PL partisan to vote for change especially the district that are traditionally PL.I do agree that there are wealthy opposition supporters who can help finance the campaigns in the constituencies where opposition stand a better chance of defeating PL.However those individual financer should do so on good account, without expecting a trophy in the end, that is if the opposition makes it.Also, there should be a change of mindset on the part of the opposition voters.Obviously if we want a united opposition, this will mean uniting at least 4 parties.A leader will need to be democratically elected in the process. If we all BELIEVE IN CHANGE,we should not be dissapointed if our favourite candidate was not elected as leader and therefore refuse to vote in the end. There should be no preference,if our aim is for change.
Once we get the change, and the system changes for the better, the stubborn will realise that they should have voted for change long time back.At that point they will understand how powerful their vote is,and why they should not sell it.

Anonymous said...

you guys dont get it, with all your strategies 1 to 7.you are waiting your time. The NYS generation is at work plus the new immigrants numbers including the future arrival to offsets this present result. You are dealing also with petro dollars and hugh investments.AMASE TANT LA.

I respect the opinion of all the contributors on this blog but there are some comments we have to be very careful and we should take them with a pinch of salt.
For example raising R800, 000 for a radio license for the opposition is a ridiculous suggestion because we would simply be going back to square one playing by James Michel rules. How much did James Michel pay for all his abuses of his private radio and television? Answer R0000000/- so why did the opposition need to pay tv/radio of R800, 000.
What we need to do is make that as a condition for our participation in any future election.
At this moment in time we should not be thinking about any elections our task is to campaign internationally to ensure that all the institutions in Seychelles are democratic and are being run by people with integrity. Funding of all political parties should be declared and be made transparent.
Electoral reforms has to be made and the voters list should be opened 365 days not every month in a year because I believed than during the past 11 months Gappy had been using this time to manipulate the electoral registers and we had accepted that he added fake Seychelloise on the voters list. The voters list should be accessible online for everyone with IT technology can get access to it.
Seychelloise residing overseas should vote in any election because a lot of seychelloise would like to return back but not under a dictatorial regime if Indian who have naturalized like the Indian of allied builder who are residing in Mauritius. Why is that real Seychelloise living overseas not vote?
WE SHOULD BOYCOTT ALL THE DICTATORS INSTITUTIONS WITHOUT MEANINGFUL AND TANGIBLE CHANGE WE WILL LET THIS MORON MICHEL AND 55% BLIND MICES VOTE IN HIS SHAM UNDEMOCRATIC USELESS AND WASTE OF THE COUNTRY RESOURCES VOTE

Smiley is back:
Boulle's idea is great but unfortunately his running mate is not vice-president material. The so called Doctor who has got PHDs in everything to do with the mind power. I knew a young chap a couple of years ago who was very bright. he attended some of his 'mind power' sessions and the result was that the A-Level student went crazy. He totally lost it and this lasted for a very long time. The guy was unrecognisable. It was only recently that he has been able to reintegrate into society and have rediscovered his true self. Those mind power things can be very dangerous if it lands in the wrong untrained hands. Boulle must try to revamp his camp, get a more credible running mate like himself. He needs to get the young people on board.
By the way, LEPEP has won the election and we should all get together and work for the betterment of seychelles. STOP THE ABUSE!!! STOP THE INSUKLTS!!! STOP BEING RACIST!!! STOP WASTING YOUR TIME!!! START PRAYING!!!!

Some La Misere residents obviously voted against Michel. His vote in that district went down. That's a lesson for him. It is true that Seychellois was not influenced by the water contamination issue. Everyone for himself and that should not surprise us.

Our vote is secretive, do you think that all seychellois are that gullible. I get money, I take it but that does not mean that I will not vote for the party I want. How could they know for which party I would vote? Wake up guys, this is the twentieth century, election in seychelles is one of the least likely election where one could commit a fraud. Let those opposition supporters who said they were paid not to vote come forward. They must have a real problem if they decided to surrender the so called right for change for a couple of thousand rupees. The opposition leaders must be very worried now if their own supporters are allegedly being bought.

The person who wrote about overseas seychellios.Man, have you heard the story of Bahrain in the last couple of weeks where UAE sent in their troups to crush the uprising.UAE troops will land in the seychelles very soon and you will see how that bridge you want to cross will be just too far for you.so focus on your immediate danger than targeting seychellios living overseas.

lera lasose.

i am targeting overseas seychellois. i am instead calling for concrete and realistic action from overseas seychellois. sppf will never change the rules to allow overseas voters and even if they do there is no guarantees the opposition will work, i am just stating the facts. instead of you guys complaining on the internet and doing nothing worthwhile, why not you focus your energies on some innovative propositions instead of calling for your rights to vote knowing this will never happen. those who love seychelles and want to make a change, come down and join us, live the shit we live daily, experience the victimization and then u will know what i am talking about.

OVERSEAS SEYCHELLOIS -
But you miss the point, my friend. We are overseas because we could not take the SPPF shit anymore and we could get out. Trust me, if they could, half of the population of Seychelles would be where we are - including hundreds who voted for James Michel. Seychelles remains home to us and who knows many would like to return to end their days. Personally, I do not give a rat's bottom whether I can vote or not, much less who's in power. All I want to see is a better, free, democratic Seychelles for EVERYONE. Please don't patronise us implying that because we're not sharing in your shit we are second class Seychellois.

VALER MORAL -
Was James Michel on something when he said this? Was he trying to impress the two bishops in the audience? Wasn't it clear that if the President has dumped his wife for a woman more than half his age and then brought them all together, along with the mistress (who by the way happens to be a married woman)something was wrong? Leaders should lead by example. James Michel is clearly following the example of Per Fondater. Now Danny Faure is following hard in the footsteps of James. what a sad rotten shit hole our beloved country has become.

I acknowledge that some Seychellois have been forced out of Seychelles and today have new lives. But I hate to think that the attitude of most of them would be to spend their whole active lifetime living abroad and then returning to die here just because Seychelles remains their home. If this is the attitude, then it is truly sad.

I wonder if oil was found here what will happen.Even under corrupt Pl, the wealth will trickle down because there is just under 100,000 people to share it with. I bet then a lot of so called seychellois will be flying down, without giving a shit whether James Michel is in power or not.

An Indian recently ranted about how Seychellois has done nothing and was just a bunch of insignificant monkeys. Whilst this was hurtful, he was spot on. Because us Seychellois, wherever we are have always been a bunch of loud mouth cowards who do nothing but complain. Those here still have the jungle mentality of being ignorant and selfish and those who have escaped from the jungle I am afraid to say but this little saying applies "you can remove the monkey from jungle but you cannot remove the jungle from the monkey"

Anonymous said...

There are enough Seychellois in Seychelles to remove PL. But they keep selling their vote and then depend on foreign help to bail them out. Why should those abroad disrupt their lives to come and help them out ?

Also remember that it is also the taxes paid by Seychellois immigrants in Western nations that are being used by Western countries to cancel Seychelles debts.

Exactly my point, if you are unwilling to come down fair enough. Who in their right mind would want to come and live in this shit hole and trying to turn water into wine by getting ignorant and blind to see sense?

But I dont think it is fair also to argue for a right to vote for those overseas, then not to live with the consequences of your vote. The battle to remove PL must be whole-hearted one by those in this dump, not a half-hearted attempted by those with a back-up plan

Anonymous said...

Good idea about boycotting Chicco. But my friend, if he has planned this gig, it means he knows he will have people coming in to see. Seychellois are the same everywhere. I am sure you will find a load of Lepep sympathisers attending or even those who don't just coming out for a good time. When people stand up and take a stand this will be a beginning. I am though if it got through here that his Uk visit was a disaster, it will be good news for opposition people here, who will know that at least our overseas brothers and sisters are in solidarity with us and show this opportunist that whilst he is making money singing and encouraging people to give james michel 5, he is also contriuting to the demise of this country

I saw a number of fake citizens voting in this election. Many had GOP's and became citizens by power of the President.

Now to hear the plea of Seychellois overseas to their right to vote, which includes many of my own family, some who pay taxes in Seychelles only shows how cynical the situation has become.

All Seychellois have a right to participate in the affairs of their country. Similarly they all have a right to be able to return and livein their beautiful country being hijacked by communists and opportunists!

Whilst I admire C Gill, for at least doing something and coming up with a new initiative and party, I just don't see how people will rally behind this. Unless, of course, I am underestimating him, and he has the resources to stick with a long term because he needs some very reasons to get people to switch from the SNP to him. Reply to "have Faith by Ramkalawan"-

We are pressing forward with the registration of a new party for a new generation, driven by young people and energy of the young. That includes me, the youngest opposition leader since 1993 when I helped write the Constitution of Seychelles.

What separates our call for change to Ramkalawan's is this:

RAMKALAWAN PLAYS TO BE NO 2 ALL THE TIME. WE PLAY OUT HEARTS OUT TO WIN AND BEAT PL. IT CAN BE DONE.

I know how to do it.

A VOTE FOR RAMKALAWAN IF HE STAYS OR SNP IF IT STILL EXIST IN THE FUTURE, IS A VOTE TO KEEP THEM NO. 2 AND WELL FED FOR 5 MORE YEARS.

WHEN YOU WILL VOTE FOR SNP, YOU WILL BE VOTING FOR PL AND MICHEL OR FAURE AS USUAL.only they will benefit from an SNP vote!

Does this sound familiar Jean Francois and Wavel John Charles?

A VOTE FOR SEYCHELLES FREEDOM PARTY WILL BE A VOTE TO REMOVE PL AND GIVE SEYCHELLOIS FREEDOM AND RESPECT THAT THEY ARE ENTITLED TO.

THAT WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE, THE DIE HAS BEEN CAST IN THE 2011 ELECTIONS.

Only unity in the opposition will undo this die cast by SNP.

SFP has no intention of being SNP's junior partner, and yet be tasked with educating its leadership on how to do politics in Seychelles and cordinate it with international associations.

Let us all work together in the opposition and unite, so that Freedom will reign around the mountains of TRIOS FRERES!

Gill, stop barking. Start holding meetings, to check the strength of your support. See how many PL supporters have been waiting for you to start a party.

So far, all we can see is that you want to replace Ramkalawan. You can't even work with the present SNP leadership, no doubt you have your reasons. But it means there is no united opposition, as far as you are concerned. You think you can replace SNP and Ramkalawan. You had a chance to test your support in the election, but you chickened out.

So far, we have yet to be convinced whether you will step up to the plate to challenge PL. You did nothing during the election campaign, apart from writing on STAR.

Despite a poor result, the SNP leadership got 41% of the vote. This sounds like solid support, a solid base built up through hard work. Do you really think they will give this up or even share it with you ? Unless you can show you have support in the country, you are just another businessman with money who wants to be president but has no following.

SNP can ignore you because: you have no political support, you spend your time attacking them and not PL, and you are unreliable. Unless you can demonstrate your political support, your political career is going nowhere.

Brigitte said...

SPUP started off with Autocracy. They said everyone should be equal. We should share everything equally money, education, health. They will make sure that no one is earning more than the other. To this day, one still cannot for example open a taxi company, with telephonists(employment) taking calls and bookings, and employ drivers, self employed or on contract - not only is it a guaranteed wage if on contract, it will also be easier & quicker to get a taxi at any time of day, wherever you are. However one cannot do that because it not fair that the owner of the company will be making more money than the drivers. France Albert Rene is the owner of Seychelles, no-one complains that he is making more money than the workers of Seychelles.
Then again they have changed their tune along the way from Autocracy to "Democracy" without any explanation. In a democracy if a person is incompetent, they will be told. In an Autocracy we're all competent.

Reply to SNP Apoligist-

I am sorry for the divisions. However, I do not see any attempt by SNP to resolve this.

Right now they have polled No 2 as usual. But that is not what they promised.

I do not have to repeat why I was not a candidate in the election. You know as well as I do that my party was barred.

We will press on, and we will talk about what manifestation of support we have in due course.

For now, let hope come to life, only PL collaborators would want to kill hope at this dark moment.

We must all unite to let Freedom Reign around Trios Freres!

REPLY: the SNP leadership got 41% of the vote. This sounds like solid support, a solid base built up through hard work.

Really??? Many people voted SNP whilst holding their noses in their hands because they had no other REALISTIC option.

SNP is in a mess and Wavel as leader should be held accountable. He has not been good enough for 20 years and if people continue with this blind support, then we will become just like PL supporters, supporting someone/something just for the sake of doing so.

St louis gave SNP its strongest support. You know why. People there have a mentality-"Even if it is a pig, we will vote for it as long at it is not sppf" But wavel should not take that for granted because the way things are going, he will end up being well and truly annihilated in the next assembly election if he does not do something to change the present situation.

Anonymous said...

Unless you can show what support you have and make Ramkalawan tremble, he is not going to listen to you. Why should he ? He is entitled to think that 41% want him to stay. He is only 50 and will get better as a politician.

This election and the decision to boycott the National Assembly have strengthened Ramkalawan's position. It does not look like he is going anywhere. He will be re-elected as leader by the party.

Gill, you can't beat them. Join them. Your attacks on SNP are bad for the image of the opposition, but they do not change a vote. They do not change a thing.

Do some honest opposition work -- i.e. attacking the government to improve the lives of the people and the country we live in -- and hope that the people will reward you at elections whenever they take place.

Anonymous said...

There is no evidence that anyone voted for Ramkalawan under protest. If anything, we can see that the protest votes went to NDP, Boulle or stayed at home or were spoilt.

Anonymous said...

Hey Christopher you still have not answered my question: How do one get smiley faces on here?

Anonymous said...

Volcere has resigned as leader of NDP. MAybe Wavel should follow suit.

4 elections, 4 defeats. come on guys, is he the only person out to lead the opposition?

Anonymous said...

You know what the arguments are today from PL?

They change their leaders and renew their leadership. Albert Rene gave way to James Michel and he will give way to Danny Faure.

Wavel meanwhile will give way to wavel in 5 years time.

Anonymous said...

He is only 50 and will get better as a politician. (Wavel)

At the rate he is going, he will be 80 when he gets to State House!!!

When Mancham was seen as having betrayed the Seychellois nation in his negotiations with Rene after his return from the UK, he got only 37% in 1993.

After a disastrous period as Leader of the Opposition, in 1998, Mancham got 14% and the combined opposition vote against Rene was only 33%.

In 2001, without DP, Ramkalawan got 45%.

Ramkalawan is entitled to think that he has a strong personal following and that there is no clamour for him to leave. He is entitled to stay on, unless there is someone else who can take SNP further.

If there is such a man, let him come forward. I am sure Ramkalawan will do the right thing then.

Anonymous said...

PL changes their leaders because they have no choice. Albert Rene could not run again as President, after having served 3 terms. These 3 terms were on top of the 3 terms permitted under the constitution for the 2nd republic. Albert Rene could not change the constitution again. Remember the US warned Russia's Putin against changing the Russian constitution to run again as president after his terms were over.

Michel has run again, despite the fact that he will be over 70 years by the end of his mandate. He may well run against for a 3rd term (the first years do not count as a term).

Do you really think Albert Rene would have stepped down if the constitution allowed him to run again and again ?

Anonymous said...

PL supporters see nothing wrong with one party in power for 40 years. Yet they have a problem with Ramakalawan as leader of the opposition. It is just politics. They would have supported Rene as president till he died, if the one party state had not been brought to an end. They are not serious.

Anonymous said...

Yes, agree with you on that. Rene would never have left-was health reasons that forced him out.

The point about Wavel is during his 20 years in office as leader of opposition, there should have been others around him with the ability to take over. St Ange is gone, Georges is tainted over financial dealings and David Pierre has parachuted out of his pram with his toys.So who is left? Is that not an indication that there is something wrong there and in the final analysis, Wavel should be held accountable to his supporters. Fair enough if he gets the support, he stays but there should be a taking stock period.

Anonymous said...

When you look at Alain St Ange now, you have to ask yourself what kind of opposition leader he would have made. I think it would have been Mancham Mark II and in that case we would be looking at a disintegration of the opposition vote. Ramkalawan has spared us that.

You can expect Mancham to lick Michel's arse even more now, under the guise of playing the role of elder statesman. It will get very nauseating over the next few years, as Mancham behaves like an "elder statesman". He was quick to echo Michel's hypocritical call for political campaigning. But he remained silent as PL played dirty and bought votes.

Anonymous said...

There are many Seychellois abroad who support PL. Once an SPUP or SPPF, always one I suppose. This applies even to those who sought political asylum abroad. The majority may notionally support the opposition, but if PL were to export their vote buying practices abroad, there is no guarantee these people will behave differently to those at home. You will be surprised how many Seychellois living abroad still think and behave like those at home. Giving them the vote may not change much.

Anonymous said...

Exactly last blogger-There is no guarantee if overseas people voted that the opposition will win. Rather than waste time fighting to change the law to allow this to happen(which SPPF will never do) we should concentrate on the people here who are living the nightmare.

The congratulatory message from Sarkozy and the Commonwealth is not unconditional. These are diplomatic messages, the language being always careful.

Sarkozy mentions the need to build democratic structures. This implies that Michel's election was due to one-party structures which have not yet been democratised 18 years after reintroduction of multiple-party system. The opposition should take comfort in that. The patience of Quai d'Orsay and Élysées Palais is running out. Perhaps even the European Union.

The Commonwealth message does not refer to true and fair elections that Michel claims. It refers to a credible election process. It refers to issues about the election raised by the observers, namely the monopoly over mass media by PL.

It is interesting that they have balanced their congratulation (which is de riguer) with diplomatic criticisms about the state of democracy in Seychelles.

The opposition should be emboldened by this, as it pushes aggressively for democratic structures to level the playing field.

Ironically, one institution in Sarkozy's and the Commonwealth's sight is SBC which used these messages as party political propaganda.

Hi all, a bit of history before I go to bed. Happy reading.

Gill crossing the floor

yet again?

Turnout at the Convention on Sunday was a disappointment for SNP
The SNP leadership, after pulling all the stops managed a poor attendance for its Convention Sunday, not filling the ICCS, as Parti Lepep did for its gathering of Party veterans Friday. Lots of empty seats were obvious to SBC viewers.

The appearance of maverick Christopher Gill, the former DP MNA who ‘crossed the floor’ in 1998, could have surprised but also disenchanted most opposition supporters.

As recently as some weeks ago, Gill was firing at Ramkalawan in the Le Nouveau Seychelles Weekly. To, Gill, Ramkalawan was weak and ineffective as opposition leader and should be sent packing. So what prompts these two to gush praise on each other? The other guest speaker was former diplomat and PS Sylvestre Radegonde. But, he had already revealed himself since 2006 and is now in London.

Gill, who grew up on the US island of Guam in the Pacific, was unknown in Seychelles when he appeared on the scene with the return of multi-party rule in 1992.

He could hardly utter a few Creole words. But claiming he was of the Mancham family - that his biological father was the late singer Micky Mancham, helped immensely. He campaigned at Bel Ombre, in those days viewed as the opposition’s strongest district and got elected, largely on Mancham’s credentials.

But it did not take long for Christopher Gill to make plain his ambitions. In 1996, he made a bid to contest the ex-President and uncle, James Mancham for leadership of the DP. That was foiled.

One morning, Gill who had always accused Mancham of being soft vis-à-vis SFFF, startled everyone, when in the National Assembly he chastened the DP and declared he was “crossing the floor” to join the SPPF.

In so doing, Gill praised SPPF’s good governance and achievement in building thousands of houses. But he had clearly hoped for tangible recompense.

His inflated ego did not allow him to accept SPPF applause and welcome he had clearly hoped for more than that - a ministerial portfolio or at the very least a proportionally elected seat in the Assembly.

This did not happen and for a few years he was quiet on Praslin, where SPPF inspired political stability meant his guesthouse prospered and he made good money sub-dividing and selling land at Anse La Blague.

With the resurrection of the “Weekly” ahead of the 2006 elections, this maverick politician had turned coat again and was hammering SPPF for every evil under the Sun. Though the DP had joined the SNP in an easy electoral alliance, he stopped short of expressing support for Ramkalawan.

Wavel did not like him either and always apparently called him “Judas”. Gill had meanwhile not shed his ambitions. He had apparently always plotted against Paul Chow and when the latter resigned early this year Gill thought that was his chance.

But he was outsmarted by the editor of “Weekly” Ralph Volcere who had, the support of some old-timers like Georges Bibi. They were not about to hand over the DP leadership to someone more interested in making money on Praslin.

Ramkalawan and Gill have however some common streaks which could have prompted them to bury the hatchet for the time being.

Besides a big ego and being fired by ambition, both share a pathological hatred of SPPF - Parti Lepep.

Gill loves the limelight and Ramkalawan is bathing in glory, at least just now. But the new friendship, already ridiculed by many opposition supporters will most probably be short-lived.

Interesting to see how many idiots who are SPPF/PP sycophants come on this blog to vilify those who are writing. Like someone said, you have SBC, Nation and your rag the People.

This is the sad mentality of the SPPF parasite; it is insecure and cannot keep its nose out of the business of other people. It is forever looking to control others, leeching and sucking, insulting, cheating, lying, hoping to spread its venom.

here is some advice-Go read your rag the People where you will have the opportunity to praise and adore your leader kim il sung. If you dont like this blog, then get the hell off it and stay away.

Mancham plays the peace-maker abroad. At home he sends provocative messages to be read on SBC to provoke the opposition. His friends in all this peace palaver should tell him that charity begins at home. He is a divisive figure at home.

Mancham should really join Parti Lepep but he probably thinks his blackmail value to PL is higher if he pretends he is part of the opposition. He has sunk very low indeed. Politically he is a spent force, outsmarted by Rene, Ramkalawan and now Michel. He is left with giving himself titles such as founding father and elder statesman to gratify his ego. His message to Michel was clearly designed to rub salt in the opposition's wounds, hardly the action of a man of peace or an elder statesman. He failed as the short-lived president, failed to provide leadership in exile, failed to capitalise on the goodwill that he had upon his return, failed as the leader of the opposition and ended up betraying the very people who supported him. He looks pathetic as he follows Michel around at every official occasion. The tone of his message shows that his national reconciliation was just a fig leaf to hide his failure as a politician. His father's wealth propelled him into politics but he lacked the nous to succeed in it.
