Seychelles riots over role of UAE ruler
Street protests have erupted in the Indian Ocean island of Seychelles after a palace complex built for the leader of Abu Dhabi polluted surrounding rivers by discharging effluent from a sewage system.

The focus of the demonstrations is Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the president of the United Arab emirates, who is building a vast new palace with 360-degree views across the Indian Ocean on a former US Air Force base.
An accident at its sewage plant allowed diesel and raw effluent to seep into local water sources. The 800 nearest residents have prepared claims against Sheikh Khalifa after doctors warned of life-long health consequences.
Lydia Jumeau, who lives close to the Sheikh's palace with two daughters, her brother and his wife, said her water supply was visibly contaminated. "We only noticed the diesel when we filled baths and they would have an oily rainbow across the surface," she said. "Soon we were coming out in rashes. When the sewage came down the river, you could not miss that. For weeks I was forced to wash with bottled water."
Mrs Jumeau has on three occasions led demonstrations over the lack of government support, forcing the government to deploy riot police.
Government officials said the protests are unreasonable since the leak was quickly stopped and clean water has since been trucked to the area's 360 affected homes.
Sheikh Khalifa bought the ex-US satellite tracking station for £320,000 in 2005.
The Abu Dhabi court has reportedly offered more than £10 million to replace the entire piping system on the affected mountainside. A compensation offer of over £5,000 per household, from the Sheikh's construction contractor, Ascon Ltd of Abu Dhabi, has been rejected as inadequate as most of the affected homes are uninhabitable.
"Their homes are now effectively worthless unless they rip out all the pipes and deep-disinfect the whole place, which few can afford," said Christopher Gill, a Seychellois newspaper columnist.
Mrs Jumeau and her neighbours additionally argue that future illnesses and the possibility of expensive trips abroad for treatment should also be recognised.
"It's our government who is to blame, we think the Sheikh probably doesn't really know the extent of what is happening here on our little island," Mrs Jumeau said.
Mrs Jumeau and other neighbours say their government, led by President James Michel, is too cosy with Sheikh Khalifa to push for real compensation.
"There is an element of politics being brought through by people here to blow this out of proportion, so that it reflects upon our relationship with the UAE," said Joel Morgan, Seychelles minister for environment, transport and home affairs, who is leading compensation negotiations for the government.
"I will not deny that President Khalifa and President Michel have a very close working relationship.
"The UAE has done a lot for the Seychelles, and that is why Sheikh Khalifa was invited here to establish a residence."
The government has even be accused of intimidation tactics to stop the protests.
Mrs Jumeau's Hyundai hatchback was set alight soon after she went to bed on Monday.
The UAE president, who is worth £12 billion and whose family owns Manchester City FC has not commented on the allegations.
He is said to be recovering from illness in a Geneva hospital and attempts to reach his private office in Abu Dhabi were unsuccessful.

Congratulation to Gill for make Sesel seem like place with riot and scare tourist away. Sa meme sa lamour pou nou pei
Reply to Lamour-
Star is doing its job. We down loaded the internet version of the article, which we google alert.
The journalist that did the interview, call the incidents at La Misere riots. Do not blame me for that or Lydia Jumeau.
What do you call AK-47's , 50 armed men, Tear gas, 9mm guns, truncheons, in place of a protest?
Riots do not have to lead to 800 deaths.
Now, do not blame other Seychellois for your own failures Communist Collaborator.
Inferring Mike Pflanz is a freemason will only make him want to do a follow up article.
If PL wants to reduce press coverage on the La Misere issues, as your comment suggest, settle the claims and make the residents whole again.
Stop mucking about. While you are at it, give Lydia Jumeau a new car ( Hyundai-4door), and pay the first year insurance on it.

Well said Chris!
It was the presence of heavily armed anti-riot police and army that told the world there were riots. I don't think James Michel worked that one out, before following his natural instincts and resorting to violence against peaceful people.
More protests will put more international pressure on Sheikh Khalifa. A violent response by the government will make things even worse for them. The world will hold Khalifa responsible for the actions of this government and its arsonists.
You are wrong. It show how poor research the telegraph print and make us see the lies. Gill is explaining above it is riot, so he must be thinking like that. We can guess who to blame.

Guam - The Guam Environmental Protection Agency inspected the Gill-Breeze Subdivision this morning after the agency received a complaint about the lack of water and waste water infrastructure at the Yigo Subdivision. And Cyfred's attorney contends that there was never an obligation to provide the infrastructure in the first place.
"All of the lots in the Gill-Breeze Subdivision are of a half-acre size or more and therefore not required under the subdivision law to have any form of sewer infrastructure," said Attorney Curtis Van De Veld. He has said that his client is not required to provide such service to the residents at the Yigo subdivision.
Meanwhile, this morning inspectors with the Guam EPA combed through the Gill-Breeze Subdivision, looking for possible violations. Officials say it's obvious with the trash throughout the area, and lack of water and waste water infrastructure that there are serious concerns that need to be fixed at the Yigo subdivision. GEPA conducted the inspection after a complaint was made to the agency a week ago.
Come on Daily Telegraph. Get on the case...
Thank you christopher gill for letting the people ofseychelles know the truth about the khalifa story. We support you.
Thank you for the support.
President Michel said think out of th ebox in 2007 just before we went bankrupt!
Jack is out of the Box, he better real back his thugs and let the people of La Misere go on with their peaceful protest, as it is their right, which they are born with as free people.
Christopher Gill
Riot or mere protest is not the issue here. The critism of the word used is merely to divert the attention. If if was so wrong to use the word 'riot' then I'm sure a awsuit would have been in place already. Then again, if there was no riot, why did the PL send their riot-police to La Misere? Or were they afraid of a riot taking place?

BOOBY,most tourists who visit our country are from Western countries they know and understand what demostration is all about they practice very often ,it is a right they have to do so ,it is a right in democracy.
toursits come here becuase of our environment, its beaches ,to appreciate our culture, tradition etc not to see a bunker being the landmark of our country.
Instead of trying to justify PP wicked practices why not ask them to REPENT AND step down in order that they can face justice.

Tikolor,
If thousands of Indian workers can illegally marched our streets in HINDU procession every year,Seychellois has a constitution right to peaceful demonstration.Tell Michel to read and understand what is stipulated in the constitution.

Firstly to this Boof Head Zann the Dark Chocolate One..... Please try and understand the difference between the Hindu march around a few streets of Victoria and the Catholic procession around a few Victoria's streets.
And the laughing stock is Gozie Gill ki telman bez Kouyon, i vraiment fer la peine. He is advocating that the "government replace Jumeaux's four door Hyundai car with one year's free insurance." The Government in doing the right thing in replacing Lydia's car will therefore set a precedent that is unprecedented in the History of Seychelles because before one can say "boo", all the La Misere Residents that are Anti PL would be burning every types of "danre" that has seen their Used-by Dates.
You see Gill, if you had any brains Mate, God help us for you would be bloody dangerous.
Kontiyen aboye.....errrhhh ensilte mem. En de se zour en dimoune pou bez dres ou lapo la gel.
Just a reminder. Wavel will never accomodate Chris Gill the Floor Crossssser and your brothers in arms in the Dead Party for the simplest reason that "you cannot be trusted." La i la, TIKLO kinn koze.
The Christian march are legal Seychellois are christian, the Hindu march is a an illegal march since those participating are Indaind workers nând not Seychellois.I have a solution for them:Instead of allowing them to march in our streets ,Air seychelles could organize a flight each year to bring them to Indai for the occassion thus bringing extra dollars in the coffer of the already bankrupted company.
Since Mrs Jumeau car was burnt by PP paid killers ,it is justified to ask PP to compensate Mrs Jumeau and moreover investigate the case as soon as possible. And if you don^t like to see La Misere resident in the street pay them their compensation PP instead of trying to purloin the money to sponsor Pp^s coming election.

Looks like somebody owe her local Indian shop some money for the month. Its not possible! She just dont want to see them. And now she reveal the new law of Seychelles - judge before pay first investigate after.
Long live MSR demicrazy
I don^t owe any foreigners anything less the Indians:In fact it is Seychellois Taxpayers^ money that have made Ramados multi-millionaire.
Jeanne D^Arc
I have noticed that Chris Gill signs as Jeanne D^ark every time Chris Gill accuses PL such as "sending PP paid killers to burn Lydia's car" so that he is not held accountable in a court of Law for defamation.
And Chris Gill, your "Rene the Butcher" means nothing when you sign Christopher Gill. Are you referring to France Albert Rene as the "butcher" when you sign off Christopher Gill at the bottom of your blog?.
The ball is now in your court Mate and I am warning you and not threathening you. Let us make that very very very clear indeed. After all your insults, I doubt very much if Pesi will put his hands up to defend you in the Supreme Court of Seychelles.
Have a good day. Warm regards TIKLO.
Tikolor
You would like to find out who J DÂrc is.Surely it is not Chris as you asserted.Ask Mitsy she knows me.
Jeanne D'Arc
Only Tiklo has the ability to ignore plain facts staring him in the face.
Tikolor is blind, and his guide dog is Michel a blind himself. So that is why he is so ignorant .It is always Michel that whispers in his ears what to say.

As a whole the paper has some major drawbacks, there are no
