The Seychelles Column - By Christopher Gill

Seychelles Communists Are Suffering From National Multiple Disorder

The Seychelles Communists Party is exposing their serious state of mind disorder in the month of June.
On June 5th, they claim that they are liberators. But the person they liberated themselves from, Sir James Mancham, a deposed President, sits besides them in public meetings, he is offered VIP status under their government and is pensioned. In public rallies, they proclaim quite arrogantly, “Se Nou Ki Lepep!”

Sir James Mancham
That is the pitch for the days leading up to June 5th.

June 5th Fiasco

The focus of attention on June 5th, is Zomn Lib, a metal statute, designed proudly by Pauline Ferrari when she was a Youth Pioneer in the One Party State Dictatorship, when the Communists of Seychelles restricted overtly and openly basic human freedoms. This included the jailing of descendants, the exiling of many, and the acquisition of lands belonging to Seychellois. They argued that the acquisition of lands was necessary to redistribute land to the landless to correct historical injustices. That does not explain why they exiled so many Seychellois, and today, they do not have the right to vote as bona fide citizens of the land. Many as Dr. Jose Souyave, travel regularly to Seychelles, own business interests here, that are very substantial and pay more then their fair share of taxes, but cannot vote. It equates to taxation without representation, and the Communists, will be happy to know, that this very concept, is what led to the American Revolution in 1776, when the Colonists declared Independence from King George of the England.

Zonm Lib Statue - Representing oppression rather than freedom
Today, this is what June 5th, has given us, Taxation without representation, it has given us a party that calls themselves, Lepep, and they say “Se Nou Ki Lepep”. Fair enough, but that represents if at all only  48% of the population legitimately, at best based on historical comparisons. The remaining percentages are scammed through rigging of the Voters List. We know it has been alleged and not denied, that as much as 5,000 votes can be rigged, and this last election a tremendous effort was made to rig an extra 2,000.

The opposition should unite, and demand that the sham elections be cancelled and run another one with UN and Commonwealth conducting the elections. I am 100% sure, James Michel will lose by a large substantial margin. In the meantime, a BOYCOTT of the National Assembly must be maintained and respected by all parties.

“Se Nou Ki Lepep”

The gross inference of “Se Nou Ki Le Pep”, is that if you do not support the Communists party of Seychelles, you do not form part of the people of Seychelles. This mental voyage that the Communist party has taken neglects to reflect accurately on the state of the nation, if it was made up of only their supporters.

In actuality, the country would be made up of the royal family Adam’s and Savy’s. Most of them are Communists, but they are the millionaire type, earning great wealth off the lard of national assets.

Anyone want to mess with Glenny?    Or David?                          Or Little Rene (oops Francis)?

After that, there are the Faure’s, and Herminie’s who have become administrators. Beyond that, is a mass of bakka drinkers, and dust kicking  dancers who shake their ass at anything red, with a poor level of productivity and a high level of social welfare dependency.

Danny Faure. Cuban Trained Future Leader????

Future Leader???? God help Seychelles

To put it nicely, the country would seize if the opposition are excluded from the Seychelles population.

Change State of Mind on June 18th

By the time June 18th, the National Day of the 3rd Republic rolls around, it is evident to the President and the Cabinet, that they cannot face the challenges of National Bankruptcy, without the whole 100% of the population supporting program cuts, and efforts to increase national productivity.

By June 18th, it is apparent, each year, the Communists come down from their clouds of June 5th, and we start to witness the transformation of their multiple mental disorder as they appeal for reconciliation with the Nation.

Before June 18th, they embarrassingly send out songs on the radio to tell the people subliminally to : “Koste”, or “Unite”, or even “put your problems and national failures in a corner and forget about them” (Chicco- nice jingle but advise that can come only from a fool).

June 18th, A Cover Up For Failure

Our National Day has become a major effort to cover up our innate failures under the Communists. The parade is the same Communist parade show you would see in North Korea or Ukraine every year. The goose step is the same that Hitler used to march upon Europe in WWII.

Since we do not have enough soldiers anymore to make a parade, they toss in children into the march, Police, Fire Brigade, and some visiting military personnel that are in port from different countries.

This seems to cover up the failings of the defense forces well. Cars are washed and polished, and the President has a group of side cars to escort him alone. His wife has to take another vehicle to the parade. IMF should look into this highly autocratic expense and practice.

The side cars were donated from Morocco and these units could have been consigned to the Police, where they are badly needed, but they stay in an air conditioned garage all year long instead; another sign of failing, but this time it is the Police of their duties to reduce crime and increase patrols.

The Autocrat Speaks

This year, James Michel came out of his shell. With a divided opposition against him, and a faltering lead opposition not even threatening his bad ideas, even remotely, he was 100% himself.

It is in being himself that he allows us to DNA his autocrat style.

Michel called for another opposition, and not the one that exist now, the inference, being, he will replace the opposition. One does not get more autocratic then that, but he did. No leader in a democratic country can choose an opposition. That is a sham democracy, as Seychelles has become under Michel. It has come from his own mouth, not mine.

Michel set out an elaborate snakes and ladder of conditions the opposition must meet for him to engage in discussion with them. That is very autocratic. In which democracy does a leader set out conditions for discussions? Dialogue does not have conditions set to it? Who is Michel to set conditions? Is he some kind of super Citizen? I suppose in his own mind, he is.

Michel playing snakes & ladders

Michel said again, he will destroy Xenophobic ideas in Seychelles once and for all. This is highly autocratic in that he is overtly restricting the free flow of ideas and information in the society, a violation of the Human Rights Charter of the Seychelles Constitution, on National Day.

Michel is not much of a scholar, and seems to misunderstand the opposition’s ideas on foreigners in Seychelles. It is not being foreigner in Seychelles that the opposition opposes, it is the selling of passports and the selling of  citizenship, which has been prolific under his autocrat rule that we find highly offensive and will never accept.

Michel selling our passport illegally to the likes of fugitive Krecjir and other criminals

So Michel not being a very good scholar, should be informed and be put on notice, ideas cannot be killed! That means, you cannot kill “Sesel Pou Seselwa”! You cannot shoot it. It is invincible and bullet proof. So put your AK-47 away.

Michel - The biggest gunner!

Similarly, you will be delighted to learn, that you cannot jail “Sesel Pou Seselwa”, by jailing a political leader. Did you not follow the South African Revolution and Nelson Mandela, Walter Susule story at University of Seychelles? If you did, it would have saved you a moment of intellectual self inflicted humiliation. I noticed the President of Tanzania was laughing throughout the speech, he must have found something very funny indeed.

After June 18th National Day

Conveniently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be back after June 18th National Day. After the side cars and luxury sedans and soldiers all put on a show to empower James Michel, the real boss will be back in town, calling the shots, under Parti le Pep: IMF.

No Water For Indian Ocean Games

In his June 18th National Day speech, James Michel called for a victory for Seychelles at the Indian Ocean Games to be hosted by Seychelles, herself. I salute all the players, and wish them luck. But this year we have a slight problem, we seem to not have enough water for residents, and the arrival of IOG teams will coincide with the Seychelles tourism peak season.

Where will we get water for everyone, Mr. Michel?

It seems that while you were giving talks around the World on “global warming”, and  “Sea Level Rise Foundation” as you rightly profess, you forgot in derelict fashion, one little detail at home: no provision for sufficient water for the people, and 85% leakage of pipes, which has nothing to do with global warming and nothing to do with the rise of sea levels!

End Game of National Personality Disorder

So for 11 months, Michel will say “Koste”, “Unitie”, “Leve Debourye”. Then next year, around June 5th, we will hear it all over again, “Se Nou Ki Lepep”…..Le Pep se Nou”!

Now, if you think you will propel a micro island state out of national  BANKRUPTCY with this type of split national personality disorder, you may be flying over the Cuckoo’s nest before your next IMF extended facility is extended to your government.

I suggest you seriously consider seeking medical attention to resolve these conflicting messages you are sending out to the people. You are confusing them and sending the potentially productive energy of a people, back into the barrel of bakka tubs for Five (5) more years!

Remember one thing Michel, before June 5th, 1977, it was Seychellois that built State House, it was Seychellois masons that built Liberty House, where the Ministry of Finance sits, it was Seychellois that built the Catholic Mission. We were waking up and hustling ( Leve Debouye) long before you pulled guns on us and imposed Communism on us as a people.

But I know, to Communists, it all makes sense…..so the results will not differ anytime now or in the near future. So bring on the IMF and drop the devaluation on our heads again!

International donor and leder can help change the regime and we must pressured them to changwe their policies. The first step in briging about this change is to get donors and lenders to take moral responsibility for their complicitiy in the dictatorship's human rights abuses, and the autocratic rule.second, we must demonstrate to them with emperical evidence that the aid and development loans they provide to the regime are pivotal in sustaining the system of repression and human abuses. We must make convincing moral, political and legal arguments that show the rule of law and growth of democratic institutions in Seychelles will serve there practical and long terminterests better than expediency of supporting undemocratic methods. For instance,we must insist the EU live up to its legal obligations under the Cotonou Partnership Agreement and deny aids and loans to governemnts that do not respect human rights, phold democratic principles based on ther rule of law and maintain transparency and accountability in governance. We are calling on Interantional donores and lenders not to turn a blind eye,a deaf ear and mute tongue to our plea for helping stopping Pp dictatorship, ending the culture of impunity and in establishing democracy. The people of Seychelles need a truely sovereign governemnt that take care of its people, abides by the rules and does not depend on the perpetual charity and goodwill of others to feed its people, run its governement and maintain its social institutions.IMF recent prasied of PP corrurpted system is a farce and a mockery of our dignity.

Privately, the IMF is seriously concerned that Seychelles will go off the wagon, as Parti Lepep spends to win elections. The two visits between the presidential and national assembly elections are intended to send a strong message to Parti Lepep. IMF is worried about the rhetoric from Parti Lepep that the economic problems are over. IMF hope that the rhetoric is just electioneering, and not a fundamental lack of understanding of the challenges that lie ahead.

brigitte said...

To be honest the IMF don't give a hoochy about the The Seychelles. Apart from the loveliest whitest sandy beaches, we have nothing else of huge value ie oil, diamonds or other natural resources. If and when any of that turns up then the international community will be ready to change regime to suit them.

IMF is lying to Seychellois.IMF chief told us inflation in low of course Sir becuase unemployment is high and infaltion is inversely related to unemployment.

In the classical view of inflation, the only thing that causes inflation is,in reality, changes in the money suply.Remeber the quatity theory in money.(money supply) multiply(velocity)=(price level)multiply(amount of output). And remeber that the classics assume that velocity and output are independent and relatively constant.thus ,as money supply rises that naturally ups the prices level, too, and increase in price level is inflation.

The flag raising ceremony today was surreal. It served to highlight the deep divisions in the country.

Michel was there but the opposition was not.
Mancham was there but Rene was not.

At independence there was a semblance of a united country. 35 years later, no one can pretend that this country is united. The cracks are too big and too obvious.

A divided country -- the legacy of SPUP, SPPF and PARTI LEPEP after 34 years in power.

Given that one or two blogger is asking alternative approach to Legislating system of the Nation - for the past 30 years our view and last year Mr Paul Beranger came out and stated if his party won a Senate "bicamreal parliament would be introduced" in view that several blogger are using Mauritius System and model and example.

Beautiful word to pronounce and to talk about the introduction of a Senate in Mauritius/Seychelles . However, how many Mauritian/Seychellois out there understood the meaning of a Senate?
It would have been better if you gave an introduction of the meaning of a senate instead of just over-using the word to appear “so distinct”!

What is a senate?
According to wikipedia a senate is a deliberative assembly, often the upper house or chamber of a legislature or parliament. Well for many the above are still alien words let me try to get this into more simpler words.
Mauritius/Seychelles has a unicameral parliamentary system which means that Mauritius/Seychelles has only one house which is the actual parliament, National assembly with (60 directly elected member, 8 best losers and 2 members from Rodrigues.) current number of elected in National Assembly for Sechelles Seychelles.
Mr Beranger is talking about a bicameral parliamentary system which common in modern democratic countries. In a bicameral parliamentary system there are two houses which means “two parliaments”. Mauritius/Seychelles may then have a national assembly and a senate. Normally the Senate is referred to as the upper house and has a smaller membership than the lower house.
To get people in the picture let us take the example of UK whereby there is a House of Lords which in the past was based upon an aristocracy system or nominees and a house of representative/Commons with directly elected members.
In Mauritian/Seychelles context: A senate in Mauritius/Seychelles is not a bad idea BUT the question to be asked are as follows:
What will be the number of members in the senate?
Will the senators be elected by the people or nominated by politicians?
For how long will senators stay in the government?
How will the relationship between the two chambers varies?
So instead of just proposing something, the best is to clarify about the details that people need to know.

Anonymous said...

I agree. Let us take for instance SNP proposition that an electoral commission be set up, they never articulated anything else other than setting up of such a commission & that it is best, when the PL comes up with the same thing now they are picking issues with the mode of appointment. Why had the mode of apptment been part of their proposition (especially since the experience with Constitutional Apptment Authority, which incidentally the SNP appted a member 2 yrs ago, so i guess they were happy with the way it was functioning then).

I can cite a few other examples where vague propositions have been given by the opposition only to have the PL take this idea but apply it wrongly. With the PL one cannot afford to have half baked proposition.

Reply to the yellow guy that says Seychelles Today defends me and I have to be loyal to it-

What kind of stupid statement is that? No wonder you do not put your name to it so you have to be liable for your idiotic statement.

This can only come from SNP leadership. Even PL with all their communism ideas would not venture down that road.

Seychelles Today says it is "Independent". It covered my issues, because it was "Independent", when no other paper would do the same.

The time for censoring our realities is over in Seychelles.

This does not prevent a paper from declaring its independence as a stance.

If you want to take a different stance, by all means, add wood to the fire.

Everyone should do their part, but do it intelligently.

Seychelles Today may not be perfect, but we are all better off having another paper then being restricted to Nation everyday.

What's wrong with Equatorial Guinea ? What's wrong with African leaders ? There is obviously something wrong for James Michel. The African Union meets today. But James Michel would rather spend an hour smelling James Mancham's arm pits yesterday, than fly out for the meeting. Jean Paul Adam (yes him !) and Peter Sinon were not at the flag raising ceremony yesterday, so presumably they have been sent there instead. A black man to accompany a white man to attend AU meetings -- it's the oldest trick in Parti Lepep's books and was used to good effect in the SPUP days. But should Khalifa catch a cold, Michel will drop everything, including Mancham, to get to his bedside.

The whole event yesterday lacked credibility. No wonder James Michel lacks credibility when he talks about law and order and fleo sosyal. His speech the day before contained a threat to the opposition, while praising "unity" in the country. James Michel needs to start acting like a real president, if he wants to be taken seriously.

I don't really see what the debate about languages is. Countries like the US, India, Finland do not have one official national language (and they seem fine).

Reply to "Gill takes issues with Ramkalawan personal".

Freedom to me is personal. I want it and expect to have it. It is my birth right, as it is the birth right of my children and all Seychellois. Because we do not support communinists does not mean we are third class citizens. Because we do not support communists does not mean we are lessor people as they try to have us believe. Communists try to make you believe you cannot function out side of their circle to be successful. It is a lie. In fact, I would venture to say, if you want to fail in life, join the Communists, cooperate with them to implement their bad ideas that drag us all down daily.

When someone keeps us from acquiring and grasping our Freedom, I take that personal. That can be Mancham, it can be Rene, Michel, Ramkalawan it can be the Ferrari clan of Jean Francois and Pauline and their plethora of fake profiles, simply because they have not enough credibility to use their own names to place a comment on a site. They are political mush!

I am loyal to the cause of Freedom. I am not loyal to men, who fail other men everyday when faced with the challenge of delivering Freedom to our people as promised.

I am loyal to ideas, good ideas. They may not be mine, they can be others ideas. If there is a good ideas out there, I will fight for it.

Right now there seems to be Three good ideas out there:

1. We want our Freedom;

2. We must be united as an opposition to get it, no matter how painful it will be to unite;

3. The fastest way to Freedom is to not give communists PL more credibility and,

that can be achieved best by a full all out BOYCOTT until our conditions are met for a levelled playing field to participate in the process.

Ramkalawan is Boycotting the National Assembly, by sitting in the leather seats, provided by the Communists PL.

Mancham boycotts the communists by attending their functions in coat and tie on a tropical island.

If there are any other better ideas out there, please do advise me so I can adjust my sails as needed.

I take your point, and I understand exactly where you are coming from.

I will adjust my sails only for the quest for Freedom as it needs to be adjusted.

The problem you may not see that I do, is that we have been debating with Anonymous persons and fake profiles, systematically, that come from SNP.

On research we find out who they are. It is not a pretty picture that commands much respect.

If you will reflect, we have never had a single ID comment from Mr. Ramkalawan on this blog.

Yet this gentleman recieves every single comment in his mail box and is is a public servant tasked with leading the opposition.

We even offered him a Column on STAR each week and he never submitted anything.

Respect is due to he who commands it with his actions and deeds.

That is why we call it respect.....one earns respect, .... you cannot demand it in a vaccum.

There is no sense at this point that we decorate and shower fallen generals with accolades of greatness when they have failed us on a magnitude that will take years for us all to emotionally and intellectually reconicle.

This has been the way the western world has run for hundreds of years.

It has resulted in great wars aswell, when respect was commanded, when it was not merited.

I believe everyone needs to adjust their sails at this point.
The first step to those commanding respect, is to do the right thing: RESIGN and UNITE on the way out!

It is the least you can do for Seychelles.

I agree enirely with Chris on this one.
Ramka and SNP as the official opposition cannot continue to give us mixed messages. We want a leader of opposition who opposes effectively within a sensible strategy as opposing is only one of the means to an end. Many people have walked through fire, got burnt and killed for Ramkalawan and SNP.To those who died, what he is doing today is an insult to their memory. Those living do not deserve this. If Ramkalawan feels that he can no longer or wants no longer to be leader of opposition, he should resign IMMEDIATELY and let somebody else do the job. Hanging around to collect his monthly salary, pension and all that goes with the position is a betrayal of people's confidence. Lead or follow. If you're doing neither, get the hell out of the way.

I'm amazed how these days not only James Michel continually implores the blessings of God on Seychelles in every speech but how the two main churches, especially their bishops, are carted out on every occasion. And there have been a few recently: they've been blessing the tugs, the chinese planes and were there for the flag raising ceremony on independence day. Were they also asked to pray for 18 June? Why are they selective? I would have thought that an important day such as the national day would call for their presence? Where are the other religious denominations of the country?

A flock of sheep needs to be led by an Identifiable leader that makes himself known to his flock, answers his flock, and sets an identifiable definative path for the flock, so all the sheep know what is next.

It seems Ramkalawan wants the pay of a Shepard but does not want the responsibility of one.

That is the point.

This stature works well in a fake democracy or even ina communist society.

This is why PL is delighted and over the top with the status quo.

My point, is this: is we want Freedom, we will have to demand more from our Generals that promise Freedom, and deliver us servitude.

I am following these comments after my back has given in to digging water holes for peak season. I will avoid holes, just in case a fake profile is hiding behind a rock.

In any case, the point is that many have died, many have been burnt tortured, killed victimized, and life compromised.

That is the point, and we must never forget that Freedom does not come to those that expect it to fall out of the sky on their lap.

Claude Monnaie died,he was murdered, tied to his steering wheel, burnt to death. He supported Mr. Ramkalawan.

There are others, but the point is, Freedom is about these people, their families, and all of us. It is not about any one single person.

This is why Mancham lost it along the way.

Previous bloggers have attempted to reply to my statement that many people got burnt and even killed for supporting SNP and Ramkalawan. To get burnt is a figure of speech. People have been punished, victimised. Wasn't the Eulentin gentleman killed? No, there is no evidence who did it because there was never a proper inquest. That this basic process was not followed says a lot. I stand by what I said earlier, many people have sacrificed so much because they believed in Rankalawan and the change that he promised. I do not remember hearing him even thank you to those who voted for him. He's gone into hynernation and continues to collect his salary as leader of opposition although he's not doing any opposing. It is really time for new blood and with it fresh leadership in the opposition, especially SNP. A new leadership is needed that will have a clear vision, clear strategy and above all, CONSISTENCY. It's only then will the opposition have credibility and be taken seriously. This is the time for people like Marc Hoareau & Sylvest Radegone to come forward and for the opposition as a whole to look at ways of rallying behind the one that can best unite and take the opposition forward.

We have not seen or heard from Ramkalawan recently. It's clear that his interests lie elsewhere. We cannot continue having this vacuum. A new opposition leader is required NOW. Yes a NEW Leader. Nobody is indispensable. Ramkalawan has played his part and it's now time for somebody else to take over and carry the struggle forward. And Ramkalawan should not believe that this position is his birthright and it's only him who can determine who the next leader should be.He should make his intentions clear, leave and let the party sort itself out.

JRM losing the country in 1977 because as you assert, it was becasue he equated the Freedom of Seychelles, with his own Freedom, is not a justifiable reason for a coup and an act of national betrayal by Rene Michel and company.

If you had a problem with JRM Rene could have beaten him in an election easily, since he was on the way out anyways. Stealing the Freedom of an entire generation is not justifiable under any circumstance.

Mancham can try to sell us out, but that does not mean we have given up and surrendered our Freedom as a people. When Mancham does an act of sell out, he only becomes irrelevant to us.

The same applies to anyone that joins the rank and file of JRM aka "Salesman Jim" in the old days.

What is it with these people working for Parti Lepep. They like to blow their trumpet. It is Alain St Ange and the STB weekend article for Seychelles Nation. This time STB is taking the credit for the royal honeymoon and BBC program on British television. More visibility for Seychelles, STB trumpets, as if Seychelles needs more visibility to save its tourism industry. SPUP decried Mancham when he was travelling the world to raise Seychelles profile. Today Parti Lepep is craving for visibility as if that is the be end and and all.

Chances are all potential holiday makers in the UK have heard about the Seychelles and would like to visit. They just cannot afford it. It s not VISIBILITY that we need. It is AFFORDABLE holidays.

Not surprisingly the STB's useless press release ends with the customary licking of Michel's arse. Tourists landing on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue will find it hard to believe that 50% of the country is protected for conservation. Michel achieved this empty headline grabbing feat by excluding all reclamation lands and including inaccessible islets that Seychellois did not know existed. On Mahe, the presence of Sheikh Khalifa's palaces will make tourists wonder what the 50% conservation palaver is all about.

Anonymous said...

Alain St Ange the ass-licker is at it again. In trying to lick James Michel, is intention is to get the spotlight on himself. Before he came, Seychelles did not have a tourism industry. We have to be thankful to the guy who could not run a decent-sized hotel for the "success" of our tourism industry. What would we do without him and his tourism ambassadors?

St Ange wants the sun to shine on him. He thrives on publicity. The Guy Morels, Simone de Commarmonds, David Jouberts, James Manchams, Sylvest Radegondes, Maurice Lousteau Lalanne of this world, all who came before him and did their bit, however modest, for the seychelles tourism industry, are simply cast aside. The seychelles tourism industry started with alain St Ange and it'll end with him. Apres moi le deluge, said Napolean. When we become a little bit more humble in whatever we do maybe we'll then start making some headway.

The amount spent is down, because STB arrival figures are dodgy. It seems any foreigner who sets foot on Seychelles is classified as tourist, even those visitors paid for by the government.

Anonymous said...

Reply to Numbers up, revenue down-

Neither ST, Ange or James Michel have been brave enough to reconcile the arrival figures, with the drop in revenue from Tourism.

The reality is that Eden Island is sending money back out of the system and paying government of Seychelles, what it feels like paying per month. Rooms nights are not banked here. It is lik having a black market in existence for the macro side of the economy.

Money goes back out because the owners of the apartments live overseas and need the money to pay their mortgages and living expenses in a post bubble economy.

Additionally , both Michel and St. Ange spearheaded the licensing of 300 houses, which was part of the campaign. Most of these houses rent rooms at euro 30.00 per night. Since growth is relative to recievables, not arrivals, this effort has proven to be a catastrophic one.

St. Ange and Michel need to rethink the dynamics of the Tourism Trade. Either defend the Trade now, so that it can produce for the country or bury it now, so we can plant a flower on it's grave site as they arise.

Licensing of houses makes sense when the Trade cannot meet demand for rooms. When occupancy is at 50% on nationwide average, licensing houses and apartments is nothing short of madness.

Brigitte, I was saying VISIBILITY is not be be all and end all. We need to convert VISIBILITY into tourists spending money in Seychelles. They can market Seychelles as much as they want, but ordinary tourists will stay away if the prices are too high. Pop stars and football stars will come. They can afford a few holidays a year and they have been elsewhere before.

Seychelles is known by almost everyone abroad. The only thing what stops them from going is like you said the price. It's still regarded as a luxury holiday, very luxury holiday. Only the richest goes there, unless they know someone where they can chill with and not have to pay extortion to stay.

Gill, I see nothing wrong with having accommodation costing 30 euros. It opens Seychelles to a new market. More tourists come. They pay air fares and spend in the country. These tourists would not otherwise come to Seychelles.

Such accommodation has very basic facilities and would not appeal to many tourists anyway, e.g. those who like resorts. No swimming pools, no security, no water, no electricity backup, no room safe etc.

I suspect these people are charging more than 30 euros. They might appeal to independent, adventurous budget travellers who are priced out of other accommodation such as your hotel.

The fact is that whatever accommodation we talk about, the price is too high and tourists go elsewhere.

Seychelles.travel website says Iles des Palmes charges 140-250 euros for a self-catering bungalow (water for a bath not guaranteed). Who the hell can afford that ?

Anonymous said...

Alain St Ange must realise that it is not the amount of work that he does that counts but the kind of work to attract tourists to Seychelles. He is busy acting like a Minister for Tourism making speeches. Talking to the tourist trade overseas is talking to the converted. They would already be selling Seychelles to their clients who can afford it because they earn bigger commissions.

ST Ange is having many trips overseas and enjoying himself too much. The benefits to the economy are not clear.

STB needs to go back to the drawing board with its marketing. STB needs a new chief to do that. Perhaps Michel should make St Ange a minister as a reward for his treachery and give us a competent STB chief.

Reply to Euro 30.00 per night accommodation is fine.

You obviously do not see the logic of the Euro 30.00 per night issue I put forth.

First off, no one in their right mind will open a new segment market if an existing one us under performing.

300 houses opened when existing accomodations were under performing.

Secondly, you do not address the issue of Eden Island apartments which bank money overseas, so that does Seychelles no good at the end of the day.

Thirdly, Iles Des Palmes prices are priced right and reasonable for an eco resort. It provides full serviced units, with a solid professional back room service.

Luckily, I did not sit on my laurels when faced with a water problem like Michel has for 34 years.

I have increased my storage capacity to 35,000 litres in 30 days and we will double that in the next 60 days to 70,000 litres which will make us the second largest storage capacity on Praslin. I have requested information on a 100,000 litre tank from PUC so I can sell them water when they need it.... which they will.
We will capture river source, and bottle it, send it to Mahe, because we built an eco friendly establishment and did not piss or dump in the water source.

You will be happy to know that through the goodness of my heart, PUC uses a piece of property which we provided for another 100,000 litres to help the poor people of Anse La Blague that are given 10 sheets of tin for a vote each.

In the finality the rates we charge are very reasonable.

Please stay on the topic.

They end by stating bravely that Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, is at its most charismatic during the annual Carnaval International de Victoria, the country's three-day extravaganza of street parties, steel band floats, and family fun. The next edition of this Indian Ocean event is slated for the March 2-4, 2012.
MEDIA CONTACT: Alain St. Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, Email: alain.s@seychelles.com

Does Parti Lepep really understand what the world is saying about us ?

This article is not praising Victoria. It is taking a dig at Victoria. It is saying the place is worth visiting during the carnival only -- 3 days a year. Alain St Ange saw praise for his carnival only -- he did not realise that tourists would think there is nothing to do in Victoria when there is no carnival.

STB can't even spot jibes about our dead capital city in the foreign press and do something about it.

First off, no one in their right mind will open a new segment market if an existing one us under performing. Gill writes.

It is free market competition. Why should these people be denied entrance into the market, just because existing ones are underperforming ?

It is probably what we need to make prices competitive, rather than the government keeping prices artificially high by restricting entrants into the market.

Why should we accept only tourists who can eat in expensive restaurants, and not those who will buy their food from the local take away shop ?

If Tourism doesn't shoot up 100% or even 50%, actually any percentage at the Next "Carnaval International De Victoria" then it would have been all for nothing. On the contrary, if it thrives then, we should thrive to do even better the following year.

I can't understand why people with properties on Eden Island should be stopped from renting them out. I can't see why they should be stopped from transferring their rentals overseas.

It is free market. It is an open economy. In the long run this is what Seychelles needs.

Government regulations are disastrous, as we have seen.

Existing players in the tourism industry who cannot perform in a free market, open economy will go under. It is a business risk that they undertook when they started out. It is strange to see capitalists or free marketeers calling for government protection against competition.

SHTA is entitled to fight for its members. The government must run a free market, open economy with limited government interference. No socialism or communism please. Let the inefficient players in the tourism industry leave.

Gill, your kindness will be rewarded in heaven. I do not see the Praslinwa rewarding you with their vote.

I used Iles des Palmes as an example. You think the rates are reasonable. It is not what you think that matters. It is what the potential tourists think that matter. If your rates are reasonable and there is a market for your product, you should have no problem filling the place.

It is the same across the country. All accommodation establishments will say their rates are reasonable, yet they fail to fill them. Are they saying the tourists are being UNREASONABLE ?

That has always been SPPF's moto!!
Which is most probably why no-one can run their own business now, "leve debourye" we are not used to. "Pti biznes" we are not use to, unless we have government protection from competition.

In other words don't allow those that are competent enough to run their business with competions and make profits, to do so.

If I had an extra room in my house, I would want to be allowed to rent it out to tourists, as long as I keep them safe and comfortable, and provide value for money and pay taxes and licences. The government has no right to interfere in the interests of big hotel businesses.

Reply to Angels for St. Ange-

We adhere to the principles of the Free Market by all means.

You Communists seem to have a perverted perception of what the Free Market is.

My impression of your shallow comments is that you all think the Free Market means, "a free for all".

Quite simply you could not be further from the definition. I have heard St. Ange go on about this in an apologist style to defend Michel on the Eden Island issue. It is not correct intellectually to push this line and it is weak.

The Free Market does not mean a Free for all for everyone. It means: 1. that entities in each industry can freely compete with each other, 2. on a level playing field, 3. without any special treatment or privileges afforded to any player. Under this definition in Seychelles, there is no Free Market. It is a "Crony Market", that the Communists are dressing up to be a Free Market if there are any suckers out there.

Well, you can count me out of your sucker play.

Eden Island Project Memorandum did not provide for licensing of apartments until such time that the hotel was built. The owners of the apartments were to reside there, not be permanent vacant tenants.

To implement Free Market standards, Michel Administration and STB SLA must hold Eden Island to performing all their conditions precedent to licensing. They never did, and crony market practice kicked in to gift Eden Island a special favor. Just like the Pension Fund money was kicked in to gift Eden Island favorable finance to stay alive. This is a crony market, not a free market.

Ephelia- Free market or Crony market? Crony market.

Anyone who wants to run a business should be able to. In doing so, they should reasonably meet the standards set out for such a business. Approving licenses for votes before an election is crony market not a free market. When they exercise comes back to bite us, do not say I did not say it would.

Anyone who defends Eden Island owners right to bank money overseas fails to understand the Free Market. Money has to go through a country banking system if you are licensed there. You have to pay taxes where you use the roads. If you live overseas, your guests use our roads.

This is the grand failure of Eden Island that Government of Seychelles neglected to carefully reflect on.

Now we will pay the price for this lack of vision.

Keep on defending the undefendable and it will become a little like strangling yourselves with your own arms.

Pissed off-

Without regard to St. Ange's SNP ties, St. Ange was sent to STB by the SHTA or the Trade in Tourism.

He was sent there to fight for the TRADE.

Along the way, he jumped into Michel's lap and endorsed his Presidency, based on the position he enjoyed as a direct result of the support of the Trade.

The Trade is made up of all political colors.

But St. Ange was tasked with pushing the Trade agenda forward.

This means opposing Government position on key issues. It is a fine line.

So since he indorsed Michel, he has compromised his position and the confidence and trust placed in him to remain neutral and above all else, and to place the Trade above politics.

He has failed to do this.

For that he has betrayed the trade.

Can we trust St, Amge to advance the cause of the trade today? no.

St. Ange has asked me to write numerous articles in the past.

I did it believing he had the interest of the Trade at heart. Today, I believe he was just promoting himself and trying to destroy others in his way.

That is slick, and it is sad for Seychelles.

I am honestly saddened by all this.

For that, I refrain from my mantra in protest on this issue.

There is a lot of work to get an open economy. That is why we needed an SNP victory last May. A liberalised, open economy will bring prosperity.

It is wrong for Eden Island to be given preferential treatment by the government. The taxpayer foots the bill for such preferential treatment.

But that does not mean that private property owners on Eden Island should not be allowed to rent out their vacant properties and repatriate their rentals to wherever in the world they want. These people bought their property and should be allowed to make money from it or live in it.

If you had a property in UK you would want to be allowed to rent it out and transfer the money to Seychelles, if that is what you want. You can't do that in Cuba or China.

Anonymous said...

SNP Apologist For Eden Island-

The question that you avoid is did Eden Island follow all its conditions to get to the point that apartment owners can rent to tourists?

Yes or No.

In UK , does one just make up the rules as they go?

Is making up the rules as we go your idea of how to open an economy?

Does opening an economy mean allowing non residents, resident permits, and allowing them to bank money overseas, for rents?

Is this the open economy you advocate?

If so, does that not equate to money laundering?

I ask you to reflect carefully on what you are saying. Remember, the Tourism Industry is made up of many players, of different political colors. So who won and loss elections is no longer relevant at this point, on this issue.

The success of the Industry depends on one thing: solid decisions based on solid ideas, nothing else.

Everything else is just fluffy stuff to the wind that will not change our reality, which is about to get much worse, because simply, Mr. St. Ange has compromised our position.

His SBC appearance at State House tonight showed he cannot even look Michel in the eye and call an Ace and Ace, a spade a spade.

Essentially, he has just become part of the chain gang.

Why should private property owners at Eden Island be punished for Eden Island's sins?

Capitalists can't have their cake and eat it. They can't argue for state control only when it suits them.

Solid decisions, solid ideas -- whatever suits Gill and his businesses.

SHTA is a cartel that tries to keep prices high for the benefit of its members.

It is high accommodation prices that keep hotels and guesthouses empty.

Anonymous said...

The difference with the Eden Island concept was that it was given very special concessions for this kind of development with the main aim of attracting the kind of foreigners with enough capital to purcharce the houses as holiday homes FOR THEIR OWN USE!!!! It was agreed by the government that an added incentive would be to grant these foreigners RESIDENT (not citizenship) status only. It seems that the government may have been duped by the developers or it was an intentional tactic by some to wash their dirty money (as are the rumours) but whatever the reason, it was clearly never the intention for these foreigners to rent out the units.
We cannot compare the above with the practice and acceptable norms that anyone can rent out their homes to whoever they wish for these foreigners who purchased these properties CLEARLY KNEW what the preconditions were for the Eden Island Development. Just like there has been always restrictions on foreigners purchasing land everywhere else in Seychelles.
Let us not get lost in the emotions of the moment so that we can keep our minds focussed on the arguments in question. That is that Eden Island exists because of a special concept developed and conditions agreed beforehand, which have been broken. Otherwise how can we explain the rationale behind the government's decision to give all these concessions to Eden Island developers (still behind schedule) who are foreign developers, for such a project, when these same concessions could have been given to a Seychellois if the objective was to sell the houses to any Tom, Dick and Harry be they seychellois or foreigner with no conditions attached. Are we saying Seychellois could not have done this or were not deserving enough of these opportunities? Clearly this is a project totally gone wrong and off course!!!

Reply to St. Ange Fallen Angels-

You say that I run and advocate a cartel in Tourism through the SHTA.

This is a farcical statement and unworthy of reply. However, because you assert it, on a matter that concerns our econmic future, I will reply.

SHTA is made up of over 140 members from a cross section of the Tourism Trade. These businesses are the voice of Seychelles Tourism. They have invested and risked great amounts of money in Tourism and they trust the Government of Seychelles, to make sound marco decisions that will strengthen the Tourism Industry, not destroy it. IMF expects the same.

So far, it looks like it is destroying the Tourism Industry and this is the cause for conern.

Here are some examples: 1. licensing of Eden Island Apartments beyond demand, licensing of over 200 boat charters, beyond demand, licensing of 300 private houses beyond demand, providing insufficient water catchment or desalination systems, to meet demand on Mahe Praslin La Digue, sending Air Seychelles to the Falklands a 767-300 which could have been used on Frankfurt route and other European routes, endorsing Savy idea to fly to Chennai to open a new market without a budget, preselling seats on Air Seychelles to Air Mauritius to keep tourisy going to Mauritius on the cheap, the list is endless.

The point is this, you cannot defend failed ideas. You must change course and rectify it.

What will you say to La Digue investors when Eden Island overruns them?

What will you say to Mahe investors, when Eden Island overruns them?

What will you say to the Praslin investors when Praslin is over run?

This is not an issue of a cartel, it is the issue of bad planning on your part Collaborator fallen angel.

It is Tourism shooting off the hip!

It is Tourism without an idea how markets function and lack of respect for the mechanisms of the Free Market. You cannot see it, you cannot touch it, but it is there.

I know you Communists have trouble with that.

What will you tell Barclays and MCB and Nouvo banq when there is a wave of bad debt over ridding the entire Industry?

I suggest you straighten your back and go back to the drawing table, Seychelles Tourism needed a showboat man but you fallen angel Collaborators need to realize we need more then that today: we need solid thinking not all this mush mush you are putting out to cover your wings.

Remember this- clipped wings don't fly!

Firstly,Eden Island was biult and paid for by Tax payers money:Second the South African who owes it did not pay a cent for it ,it was simply gifted to him by Pp as has been the case in other scam deals.Thirdly allowing an inteprise to operate on our shores than has all his revuenues banked abroad means lots of foreign exchange vanish from our economy (Money linkeage) thus affecting our country.Fourthly, why should we gifted foreigners land for development than in return to earn peanuts?Do you think this is a strategy that helps our tourism industry?
SHTC is not a cartel as you call it,but rather an association that is helping to coreect thr fail tourism politcs conducted by Pp .SHTC helps bring ideas h^that Michel and his thugs could never think of.i think your critics is more based on the fact that Pp does not has controlled over it thus your annoyment.

Fancy SBC orchestrating a public spat between Misel and the Chief Justice. I bet they did not expect the CJ to speak out and defend himself. The next time Misel attacks the judiciary he will need to order SBC not to give the CJ a right of reply. Misel is not used to being flatly contradicted on SBC of all places. This En Nouvo Sesel is floundering, a few short weeks after we were promised it. More people in the Civil Service should speak out whenever Parti Lepep makes them scapegoats for government policy failures.

Anonymous said...

We know how petulant Misel can be. He is getting himself all tangled up with the Electoral Commission issue because he refuses to do what the opposition is demanding, although he must know it is the right thing to do. Now that CJ has gone on air to demand the judiciary's own budget, you can bet that PL will now not give it to him. The CJ has made it clear that PL should take responsibility for failures in the judiciary if it does not allow it to run independently.
