BREAKING NEWS

LA MISERE PROTESTERS MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD
The La Misere residents who have been seeking compensation for the water pollution disaster caused by the workers of the Sheik Khalifa construction company ASCON have been taking to the streets for the second day running.

In the lastest development, a protest was held again today at the road junction leading up to the construction site of Khalifa's palace. The inhabitants are determined to seek a solution to this ongoing saga whereby so compensation has been forthcoming since over six months. The protesters blocked access to the site and no traffic was allowed to circulate. To add insult to injury, the local truck drivers (almost 200) have complained that they have not been paid for a few months for services rendered. This has now become a major embarassement for the government of James Michel who has hastily called for a meeting with the committee members of the affected residents today (Wed 28th July at 1300hrs) to try and finalise a solution to this ongoing saga.

It is to be noted that Michel's government has ruled this country by fear, acting brutally to quell any form of protests. In this case, the government has had to back down from its heavy handed tactics, especially with elections just around the corner.

Could this be the dawning of a new era in democratic freedom in Seychelles whereby the right to protest publicly (enshrined in our constitution) can now be exercised? This is the litmus test for James Michel and a sweet victory for all freedom loving people of Seychelles.

  3. Well done people! It is indeed the right to protest where the govt cannot be as brutal as they were with the SNP outside assembly.

It seems that Khalifa has become more of a curse than anything else for JAM and his administration.

  4. I bet you all that money for the peope of La misere has already been given to government; they are simply dragging as close as posible to election time so that they can do their usual tricks to make the people believe that they have decisively fought for their payment from the company and therefore they deserve a clap....in the form of a vote. I will bet my bottom dollar on this.

  5. So Le Pep will revoke all of the GOP's from ASCON, but they don't have any? And they say Khalifa paid $500 thousand for half a mountain, well where is the money and who did that dreadful undervaluation? Suddenly after they realise the people of La Misere are taking no more shit from them they are trying to turn it around and gain brownie points. And to cap it all off they still put that useless TWAT Morgan in charge.

  6. The situation the Truck Owners find themselves in is totally unacceptable.

Unfortuntely, we Seychellois are so divided amongst ourselves and therefore cannot take collective action. If the Truck Owners were to strike collectively, then for sure Khalifa would pay up immediately. It is totally unacceptable that Truck Owners are now borrowing money to tank up their trucks with diesel at exhorbitant price in order for them to carry on working and not knowing when they will be paid.

Khalifa should pay both the Truck Owners and the inhabitants of La Misere NOW. Khalifa should also pay a 15% monthly penalty for late payment to both the Truck Owners and Inhabitants who are affected by Delo Kaka!

  7. Totally agree with you all.

I hope everyone opens their eyes and sees this simple predictable political tactic by the govt. The money is there already. The govt is just trying to get points and votes from the residents after alienating them.

I hope the people of La Misere strike every single day until they get what they deserve, get the truck drivers to join then and any other person or group of people who have issues with the government. If PUC, SPTC, Teachers and Air Sey staff joined, then power would be brought back to the people.

I'm sure most people have problems with this govt but are afraid when standing alone, but will now see that they can be strong in numbers.

Now is as good a time as any.

  8. Michel has put all his eggs in a basket- i thought Khalifa his boyfriend was going to save his ass and that of PP after bankrupting us.Now in fact Michel illegal actions in allowing Khalifa to act above our laws and disrespect of our sovereignty and people is becoming a hot potato for pp.

We morally support all La Misere resident for having the teremity to challenge Pp, the gang of criminals, and we will follow the course of their actions and if neccessary we are ready to come on the ground to help you squeeze the ass of those PP donkeys.

  9. These protests certainly beat the so-called demonstration against the price of rice or the fake protest on the beach against tourists that Rene organised, given the fear that the government has instilled in the people since 1977. It is the beginning of the end for Rene's climate of fear.

  11. Well said you all. I am almost tempted to encourage a full blockade of the construction site so that not a single truck, car or tax free BMW enters or leaves hence delaying the work till Khalifa sees red.

Enough is enough and it is time that we show this to both Khalifa and his servant James Michel.

  13. Well done. This is to show that Seychellois can do it.

If you read UAE related newspapers you will find how many workers all the way from India to China become slaves of these Arabs. Many simply commit suicide because they cannot take it anymore. This is the beginning of their power dominance over the people of Seychelles, but we should resist and claim our legitimate right.

On a second thought, I would encourage the people to make use of banners and posters to make their stance.

Accidents happens, but when you have done all that you are suppose to do then you are spared. However; SHIT DOES NOT JUST HAPPENS, AN ARSEHOLE CAUSED IT (Am sure u get my drift here)

Although OBAMA Administration or whoever was there at the time, did their part administratively (and hence not responsible for BP's errors, PP on the otherhand did not.
    E.g.
    1. ASCON not licenced to operate in seychelles;
    2. The project was not in accordance with seychelles planning requirements;
    3. There was no safe guards for the sites pertaining to the number of personnel and their sanitary requirement;
    4. No one was monitoring the site to ensure seychelles laws are applied
    5. No one knows there were that amount of people as they did not go through proper channel

    The list is endless....

All the above are the responsibility of the government of the day.
Had they done all the above then they would not be held responsible in the event that any problem happen.

In the event that the government did everything in accordance with agreed procedures and protocol; which includes ensuring the site had the capacity to sustain these workers then we would not be having this conversation would we? (the pollution one)

Trying to justify the government continual mismanagement of matters of national interest or to defend the indefensible shows that you have a fundamental character flaw.

Patrick X is right in asking you to go and suck and egg and let those that love their people try to get some form of respect from the very people that supposedly were there to defend our constitution.

  29. To Patrick X,

Aret bat la tete Bougla. Apples and pears are both fruits of the Orchard. Oil and raw sewerage are also polutants. BP moved to put the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster behind it by sacking it's Chief and appointing a new one more than three months after the spill began bleeding money and drowning in a sea of negative and outright hostile publicity. Robert Dudley has replaced Tony Hayward as it booked a massive 17 billion dollar loss for the second quarter. Yes Payeye, BP has moved on and Tony Hayward walked away with a 17 million dollar dollar handshake. He complained that he was vilified over the spill.

Now smart-ass, did Hayward caused the spill?. No.

In a multy-billion dollar organization such as BP, they have Risk-Management and Accident Prevention Departments Personel that spot-checks every inch of the drilling rigs piping with remote control cameras and they are paid big money too. Now intead of BP taking Preventive Measures to avoid re-currence, they lay the blame on Tony Hayward. Pa i fer la peine?.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Eoula Jay,

    Accidents does not "happen".
    They are caused.

An unsafe act or an unsafe condition are the causes of accidents. These two above mentioned can be seen with trained eyes and actions are taken to make sure that it does not happen again and "acts of God" has nothing to do with it. As a result of an unsafe act by a person, that person has created an unsafe condition.

What we cannot see however, are the Personal Factors. Is he on drugs?....; did he have a fight with the misus before he came to work?; These are just two examples that the human eyes cannot see that could well lead to almost anything happening. We saw recently how David Moat went on a killing rampage in England. Instead of laying the blame, we need to work on their Prevention.

I hope you have gooday J. The only thing that I have sucked on today has been 2 kilograms of Mangusteen. The white 'goose' inside those deep purple skin Fruits were flawless. They are grown in Plantations in Malaysia and not grown in Orchards if you get my drift.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ti-k-leo when will you learn to stay focus on the point of Argument?
You choose to discuss the underlying cause of accidents??? is that what you deduced from my post?

    Get real Bougla!

Anyway based on your explanation of underlying cause of accidents, this means the following:

    1. James michel made a an unsafe act by overuling planning authority
    2. The ministry responsible for transport made an unsafe act by not ensuring that all planes are properly checked
    3. GOVERNMENT of seychelles made an unsafe act by allowing ASCON to operate illegally

There are more but i will stop there.
All these unsafe act has created UNSAFE CONDITION which has ultimately caused the pollution of water which has affected the resident of La Misere.

So there you go Mate. You side track the issue-but guess what- You can run but you cannot hide.
By the way good for you that you could enjoy your Mangusteen....It would be nice if the La Misere residents to enjoyed some justice too-dont you think? Afterall they are the victim of Bad management, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions created by .......( well i already told you what caused shit to happen)

    Nice day to you too!

You fell into his trap and accept to debate if BP is like ASCON. Why do you accept to debate this comparison morons?

Then you ate the bait when you defend Obama while blaming PL.

Because BP is like ASCON. Deep water drilling is high risk and strict safety regulations are to be followed. Who is ultimately responsible for enforcing regulations and inspections? The government right? Was the inspections done in the last ten years?

So why do you defend the US government while bashing Seychelles government? Answer for your politics.

So if you agree that it is the way oil spill should be handled, then it is the way shit spill should be handled.

Now the hook is well and truely stuck in your throat. No amount of eggs can be suck to dislodge it.

Its time to see the doctor.

  39. We can blame the Parti Lepep government and James Michel (not sure if they are one and tbe same thing these days) for the ASCON fiasco, while not blaming the US government and Obama for the BP oil spill.

    The reason is simple.

In Seychelles, the Parti Lepep government has total and absolute control on everything that goes on in the country. But they negligently decided not to control ASCON and Shake Khalifa's activities in the country. That is why they are guilty.

Faced with the prospect of a real popular revolution (unlike Albert Rene's armed insurrection and high treason of 1977), Michel has stepped in to conduct the compensation negotiations. Will he square up to Shake Khalifa to defend the people of La Misere ? Unlikely.

If Shake Khalifa has any sense, he will reappraise his relationship with Parti Lepep. He is currently public enemy No. 1 in Seychelles, having overtaken the arch traitor Albert Rene.

    ReplyDelete
  40. So you mean the US goverment has no control of deep water oil drilling? For ten years Republican government allowed risky drilling with no inspections. When they lose elections guess what their friend BP "accidentally" breaks the well.

Stop digging your hole deeper if you get my drift.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The US government enacts laws and sets outs the rules and regulations for a company like BP to work under. That is the government's role.

The difference with Seychelles is that the government changes the rules to suit particular companies. ASCON was allowed to operate outside the law, however inadequate and ineffective the law was in the first place. Shake Khalifa calls the shots.

You will never understand this unless you realise that the US as a country is in totally different league to the tinpot dictatorship that was introduced in 1977 .

    ReplyDelete
  42. How is it different?

US makes rules for drilling and dont apply it on BP. Seychelles makes rules for construction and dont apply it on ASCON

Nobody change rules. They jus choose not to apply.

Khalifa will probably change course if PP is topple by the people.Because then to save his own illegally obtained assets he would have to sacrifice PP,Michel in order to keep these assets. For Khalifa to gain the love of the people ,he would have to tell us all the detailed and concession made with PP in order that we can punish those pp crooks.

  53. To the previous anonymous doctor, I have never compared the situation at La Misere with that of BP. Get your facts straight and do not mislead, as we have often been done in the last years. Rather than resort to name calling, and suggest that you too may need a doctor to cure your delusions, I’d rather hope that you are able to untangle yourself from all that is burdening you.

Tiklo, again is amusing and is continuing to ramble. My good man, please come back with issues and points that you have thought through, as your arguments really have major flaws in them. A responsible government is of the people, by the people and for the people; not just a chosen few. Please come back to reality. I really cannot wait for something that is worthwhile from you soon, and other pro-PP for that matter. I know you all can do better than what you have presented so far.

It is so interesting how when the truth is told, PP mascots such as those who participate on this site, shout out that the opposition have their own agenda. Of course they do. The Opposition like you, wants to be in power to make changes for the better, according to their beliefs on what is good for the people. Would you prefer that they did not exist or there was no voice other than your own? Or better yet, no voice for the people who do not support you?

Yes, there are many sides to this story at La Misere. However, those who are pro-govt cannot deny the fact that PP took way too much time to try to try to solve the human element in this issue - forget about compensation for now. How can it take months before one tries to assist the school and the tourism academy? These are children! How about the elderly? Be real and honest here. The people have suffered, help them. Do not use the situation for votes or to get public sympathy.

No matter what is said from PP, there is no denying the fact that your presidential candidate loses more votes year on year (percentage wise) for the last few elections. As the trend continues, PP will eventually be removed, you will destroy each other with your own agendas, then there will be the cover-ups (he did this, she did that etc..) and you lot will have some questions to answer. I wonder who will still be living in Seychelles by then? Therefore, you should really be thinking about what is happening in Seychelles and your own backyard rather than comparing us to BP, USA, Africa (always the victim) etc…

I’m sure that the people have a momentum now and there will be more protests regarding other issues. Maybe this time we can get a true professional and unbiased SBC to cover it, but that is wishful thinking.

It’s interesting how history repeats itself.

To close, as Tiklo likes to say, the people will be your judge, jury and executioner in the near future.

Now watch this space for some predicatble insults, lies and excuses by PP pawns.

My facts is right. Gets your fact right before you accuses others. Now help your friends with the big mouths, they is tangle in the trap of the Ti Kreol.

Point is the people of La Misere was misleds from the start by the swadizan oppositions. They was too busy with the millions dollars meetings. No time to meet with government. They was advised to not accept any helps until millions arrives.

Even some members of family bully others to not talk with the government.

We dont have problems with oppositions with real ideas, but we identifies when there is hypocrit misleading the peoples to makes them suffer more and dont really care about them.

When anyone crosses the line, they should become accountable. So this is the difference. I do not hang myself with any lead. Did you get it?

On this note, it is your die hard leaders who are the root of evil in the Seychelles not a BLOG. Wake up and smell the dead corp..

Are you also saying that even if the government had proper procedures and quality assurance in place, the situation at La Misere would have still happened?

Listen, we can all go around in circles with this mess. Govt helped create it, everyone is trying to benefit from it i.e. govt, opposition and even people who do not come from La Misere and those who don't even live in Seychelles and are claiming money.

The point is, let us all forget our individual agendas, help the people, penelize those that deserve to be, and also find ways to prevent it from happening again.

Or should we keep on playing the blame game. I really do not feel that at this point, it is doing any good.

But some are really pathetic and are not even worth to be on that blogger because it really shows selfish motives and lack of solidarity and compassion for la misere residents.

Typical of the chameleon SPPF always trying to look at every corner of the Earth to see something as close to the incident at la misere to tell us that the current government have the interest of the people at heart and they are really doing their level best to help the people at la Misere.

Stop comparing the situation of America to that of the Seychelles. American people are patriotic people who would never have tolerated a communist government for one day us for 35 years of oppression, corruption and pillage. BP will pay the the people affected their dues no two ways about that. And BP are operating legally in America and the American justice will resolve the issue without much politicking.

In Seychelles we now know that there is a crave for power and money amongst those running the country. If you have money Seychelles is your playground and even those who are supposed to defend you will treat you as garbage until until election time because you do not have money to satisfy their lust. They will lend you a Safari suit even though they know that you have not taken a bath to make you believe that they care just before the election. These people think that they are the character in our folklore and they have trick us at will and when they choose to.

What did the SPPF government do when the tragedy happened?
Nothing, inaction, complacency, and uncaring attitudes.
I have never seen a government who proclaimed that the people are at the centre of its developpment strategies to allow a construction in a water encatchment area. If the source of life is not important to a government. what is important to them?
Allowing 700 illegal indian workers without GOP to work without thinking of proper sanitary facilities. Is that the thinking of people with Vision. Believe it or not what happened at la misere have been the norm in Seychelles where there are a lot of construction companies with politicians shareholders behind them employing cheap labour from India to amass great wealth.

Accommodating these poor people in very poor unhygienic facilities have been the standard of this government. so as a result dangers were just looming in our back yard for the greed of money and power to control the people because human compassion do not exist for these people.

For the love of the people of La Misere instead of trying to justify mediocrity try to exert from pressure on this government so that the affected people see justice. Be you an SNP,DP or LP supporters. Seychelles need people who are altruistic and this is the real test of patriotism. When we express our solidarity with the la Misere people not because they are going to get a compensation but because their basic human rights has been trample upon by Foreigners with the complicity of greedy, uncaring, unpatriotic governments officials who have an insatiable lust for dollars and who are running Seychelles like a prostitution business ring. Who think that all Seychellois are lying in a coffin underground in a coma.
Please wake up and ask what we can do for our country now before we can start making parallel with countries like our neighbor Madagascar. Where politicians are Sheiks and the poor people are like the poor Ascon Indian workers who toil the soil for peanuts.

  66. The unreferenced writter argues that the issue is a blame game.

Perhaps it is when he views it from his angle, as he is trying to defend the un-defendable. The simple fact is that he should ask who is responsible for that big historical mess. What are the root causes of that mess. There is no one other than the leaders of this government to blame. They should become accountable to the people rather than continue to play dirty politics with SBC under their nose.

You have no right to tell us to stop debating on the issue whatever its content or nature. Again this is where you are so wrong. This is where you fall so short. Politics have no boundaries as it crosses over in every aspect of life. As a matter of fact, in Seychelles everything is linked with politics and again this has its roots with your leaders who made in that way. If you can successfully provide me with a list of proven examples where your government plays no politics in every aspect of life in the Seychelles I shall immediately stop blogging.

Secondly, you write that the resident have started to work with the government. This is outrageous. It is the government who is now starting to work with the residents who have been affected after the two protests. As I wrote earlier THEY ARE FINALLY BENDING their knees and climbing up the hills. This is a major weakness and flaw in your argument.

Thirdly, in the eventuality that the people are rightfully compensated, this does not mean the problem is over. There are far more important issues to uncover beyond compensation and learn from the incident. Of the many issues, the government has NOT BECOME ACCOUNTABLE TO THIS END AS USUAL and this has been highlighted in different context and levels by different writters. So this is why there is sufficient and adequate room to continue to debate, argue, and negotiate on the matter. The expected compensation to the people is part of the answer to the dispute, but the problems do not simply evaporate after a hand shake and exchange of money. For some the compensation is perhaps the end, however for many like me the problem is far more profound because I am interested in the root causes to the government persistant failures.

I simply do not push it under the carpet because they will come back and threaten us again.

  67. I do not ask you to stop blogging. It is B that ask you to stop blame game, so get your facts right.

Again you and your "virtual seychellois" shows your true caring for the people. All we hears is compensation and politics.

No words for the main issue of the health of the victims to be safeguarded. That why you advised the people to not seeks medical tests until the dollar arrives?

For real real seychellois we know health is above money. With our good health we can all develop and progress together.

The fanatic opposition from the start only talks about compensation and penalty and power.

Guess how many accidents like this happens every year in USA and UK and France and Australia. When raw sewage contaminate the water system in some locality or other? More than 100 each year.

And guess how much compensation is paid for such accident in these superstar country? $0

Do they change the pipes? no, just runs the taps for some days until the pathogen count is normal.

Now go and tell the poor peoples of La Misere to wait with their bad health to win the compensation in the World Court.

With friends like you who needs enemies!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Where did you obtain these two statistical values regarding number of accidents and compensation? You should remember that Seychelles is comparable to a small village, not even a district in these countries..

However more importantly, this is Seychelles not USA, Australia, otherwise we can write a book to show what are the contrasts and real differences.

I agree health is above all, but your leaders should start following the laws and regulations of this land in the first place.

  70. The gathering (assembly)of people to discuss problems and voice their disapproval of the authorities is an ancient and fundamental freedom, and perhaps as old as government itself.Using such assemblies to discuss and protest government actions are crucial to other freedoms such as speech and belief.

When a government, for instance, ignores the "will or well-being" of the people. An election can be stolen,an environment disaster can be caused, and so forth-all without significant challenge from legislature, the courts,or other designated"guardians of the people",then the people must sometimes take to the streets to visibly express their dissatisfaction.

The question that crops up is,whether the government should have the power to require permit for any gatherings to take place. Some may rightfully argue that people cannot exercise their rights without ordered soicety in which to express them.Hence, arguing that a permit for public gatherings is a reasonable balance between the need for both order and liberty in a democratic society. This arguement may be true, but only if the government upholds the law impartially and without favoritism. In other words, the law does not give the government arbitary power over who can or cannot hold a gathering.

Moreover,a law that prevents public gatherings,in itself, denies the fundamental liberty of democratic society. Therefore, people who gather "peacefully" to discuss or protest an issue do not necessarily need permissions from the very government against which they may have a perceived grievance or social injustice. This is more true, when the government itself, ignores all values and principles of democratic society. In such conditions, the decision of whether to issue or deny a gathering permit is inherently political. Thus, this fundamental freedom should not be left in the hands of a clerk.

In addition, the assemlby of the United Nations, includes the protection that"everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly. And freedom of demonstration is also enshrined in "Article 21 of the "International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights",which also permits the balancing of this liberty against other interests.

Freedom of assembly is an intrinsic part of a democratic society.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Whats your point? The people assemble in La Misere and for the circumstance the rules was not apply. Because government must apply rules depend on circumstance.
    Just like for some projects.

But when people assembles there is some costs like policing, civic facilities like toilets, public transports, clean up and so on. Who will provide this if no one knows where meeting is? who will be accountable if the people leaves a mess like empty pizza box?

Now also if peoples are free to assemble in front of your home and block your car or your childrens from going in after work? What will be your opinion then?

    ReplyDelete
  72. These cost should be covered through our taxes that we pay.

As societies evolve in line with UN agendas as outlined by the previous writer these cost will surely increase. A responsible government should find new mechanisms and budget to manage these challenges. This is nothing new. They are old questions that requires new answers in a changing environment in the Seychelles.

Of course with effective management of crowds other peoples right should not not be violated.

PUC is the first to get their head rolled in Mr Delaboudinere's immediate relief of duty. Don't be surprized if other heads of various departments feel the stick crack down on their backsides, starting with immigration who have 'allowed' 2000+ indians work in the country without permission.

JAM is desperte to show muscle and pretend to clean up the mess he himself has created. Question is, who can he sacrifice as many of the potential candidates belong to his own party.

It's agoing to be an interesting time prior to the coming election. we have already seen officials being used as scape goats, ref the immigration officer who got suspended(but never charged) in connection with the Radovan Krejcir case.

Would you propose starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out
there that I'm completely overwhelmed .. Any tips? Thanks!

layout of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to
say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
