The Seychelles Column - By Christopher Gill

Seychelles Communists Hack CAA Powers

When the constitution of the 3rd Republic was being drafted, it was the expressed intent of the framers to allow for the creation of a Constitutional Appointments Authority (CAA). The appointments authority was an idea that was taking most modern democracies, that needed to have constitutional appointments to enforce democracy that must clearly, and conclusively be beyond partisan politics.

Jeremy Bonnelame - Head of CAA

CONSTITUTIONAL APPOINTMENTS AUTHORITY Article 139 prior to  6th Amendment provided:

  1. There shall be a Constitutional Appointments Authority which shall perform the functions conferred upon it by this Constitution and any other law.
  2. Subject to this Constitution, the Constitutional Appointments Authority shall not, in the performance of its function, be subject to the direction or control of any person or authority.
The 6th Amendment passed by the Communist led National Assembly, July 11th, 2011, along with the single SNP vote from Jane Carpin, hacked the independence of the CAA as highlighted by this Article, with amendments that made the appointments of the CAA subservient to the office of the President of Seychelles, in the case of the Elections Commissions.

CAA Appoints Seven(7) President Names Five (5)

The first gross violation of the independence of the CAA is the appointment process of the Elections Commission, under the new Amendment. Under this scheme, the whole recommendation of the Commonwealth Observers, SADC, and our call for an independent election commission to replace a single electoral commissioner , has literally been tossed into a bin, to make a mockery of the seriousness of the recommendations.

The whole effort, seemingly pulls the wool over everyone’s eyes, and renders the principle of independent appointments to make democracy functional, farcical. The CAA has become subservient to partisan politics thus tainting its appointments and rendering them not independent.

Under the new process, and hacked powers of the CAA, the CAA appoints Seven (7) persons to the Commission. Then the CAA must submit the names to the President of the Republic, in this case, James Michel, a habitual presidential candidate. The President, then selects Five (5) persons to his choosing. This means he overrides Two(2) CAA recommendations, and the CAA selections become subservient to the President of the Republic. This is nothing short of an outrage.
Michel - First the Coup D'etat, now the Constitution

The matter must be highlighted, and rectified with an additional constitutional amendment. Failing to do that, we will be setting a precedence for the PL to follow in the future with appointments of judges, and other constitutional posts. The independence of that key branch of government will be eroded permanently to our detriment as a country.

Seychelles today, in practice has run backwards into the One Party state. We have a executive office, that is imposing his autocratic will upon the electorate. This autocratic will has its roots in a totalitarian culture, born out of the coup of June 5th 1977.

While we have no time to look to the past, we cannot move forward as a Nation, without due reflection, on where exactly this totalitarian tendency comes from and raises its head, when the going gets tough.

It is for this totalitarian will that Seychelles is BANKRUPT and we face moral decay in our society. Nothing else is to blame, because nothing else exist in Seychelles.

Autocracy Over Dialogue

Communists are use to dictating terms and conditions to participation in business, social life, and political life. In our short history since the announcement of multi party democracy by Rene in 1991, we have been dictated to. Only one instance, did the opposition unite as a solid force to say “NO”. This was the BOYCOTT of the first constitution which was rammed down our throats by the communists.

Communists do not understand how to dialogue. They prize politeness towards them, over communication of solid ideas to them. They call you “sauvage” if you do not bow and cow tow to them and their bad ideas. As a consequence, our country fails year after year.

Time To Boycott With One Voice

The opposition of Seychelles, must be strong and determined to unite with one voice to face down this scourge of communism and autocracy that has taken grip of Seychelles, under the Michel Administration.

The time is now, we must say “NO” again like we did in 1992 when they dished out a one party state constitution and told us to take it or leave it.

It is a time to put party self interest aside, individual self interest on the shelf and stand up for your country and say “NO” to James Michel and his autocracy.

We must say we do not accept the hacking of the powers of the CAA. It is undemocratic and it is another step to take Seychelles back to the one party state.

The Rush and Panic Is On

By closing the Assembly under highly dubious circumstances, and the cases rest before a Constitutional Court with judges on holiday, the Communists are burning up the clock to National Assembly elections, while their communist candidates follow the IOG flame around the districts, and use beer and burgers funded by the business community of Seychelles, to campaign.

We should not be in a rush to meet a Communist deadline, which they set, and they rig to sham another election.

What the opposition should be doing now, is dialogue, and work towards a unifying platform to BOYCOTT this sham process, which is in play already.

Once you fall into the trap of a communist timeline, you fail. Why? Because they rig the process and rig the rules, and sham the outcome to their favor.   They execute on their timeline.

The Boycott of 1992, showed us all that we can derail the communists game plan. We can break their nerve, and we can bend their knees to the people, and not the other way around.

When we asked for a level playing field, and international observers made the same call, we did not mean that the communists should take over the field all by themselves, by hook and crook.

From the allege buying of SNP MNA’s, to the missing ballot boxes that were alleged to have gone to State House, before National House, now the dissolution of a National Assembly, the co-conspiracy of the courts to sit on constitutional rights and human rights, and now the overt hacking of CAA independence, it looks like by hook or by crook, we are heading back to where we came from: One Party State!

If One Party State you want, One Party State you get!

Boycott the National Assembly Elections!

Seselwa Unite!

Sesel Pou Seselwa!

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!

A simple way to show a semblence of independence in the appointment of the Electoral Commission would have been to make proposal made by the CAA would binding on the President i.e Presidnet appts the people proposed by the CAA, that would have removed the polemic.

The PL would have still maintained control in any case through their apptment of CAA members with 2 appointees. I am not sure why they choose to proceed the way they have done since it is so patently biased.

Since Pp regime does not depends on accountability ,but on election manipualtion to staty on power, the only tactic left to ensure its survival ,is to have an
electoral Commission (thus where the manipulation is conducted )control by Pp cronies.

What is happening now is a classic example of how detahced a nation's leadership could be when they are not hold accountable for their policies and have no real opposition to checks on them ,then the essence of leadership is crooked into self-serving endevour instead that of service of men ,and the politicians become nothing more but feudal lords of 21st century, thanks to fake democracy. You see, when the constitution is violated and rule of law ignored and abused then they in all objectivity become nothing than fiction then the very foundations of authoirity upon which politicians are basing their legitimacy on become fictious. And the country is thus rule by nothing more than gangsters and traitors than it being a legitimiate regime.

Again,Seychellois do not need a dcitator to do the thinking in their place. There are enough Seychellois with idealism, creativity, technical abilities and genius to transform this country. They do not need the guiding hands of a beast in human skin or the mis-guided ideas of ideologies from a bygone era.

Seychellois must unite and BOYCOTT Michel self-appointed and fake Electoral commission. It's unconstitutional thus not credible.

The great the power thus the more dangerous the abuse. It is dictatorship to its extreme.Let's stop the Butcher now!

Naturally independence is only guaranteed by an independent and impartial judiciary and the persons holding the posts.

Even if the Members of the Electoral Commission have been appted by the President, i hope that Beaty Hoareau and Mrs Purvis serve in their post with independence and impartiality. I have a lot of hope on these 2. The other members as far as i m concerned are hopelessly spineless.

The problem is jobs would be part time thus won't have much influence on the Commission but just act as window dressing for Pp in order to give the impression that the Commission is effective ,all the decission will be made by the master of manipulation Gappy, though the Oppostion has asked for his resignation as you see Michel chose him again as Chairman to ensure that the manipulation is not compromised.Having new faces that follow the same ideologies of thatof oppressor , does not make the members of the supposedly new commission democrates. And it is not the names, nor their tiltes which will amke them deffrent but their independency, neutrality, conpetencemfiarness of which not of them have.

BOYCOTT these Pp stooges and this fake Commision no¨w!There should be no compromise with Dictator
and narrow Michel.

Well, SFP is already "boycotting" the commission in its own way as it hasn't even been registered as a party. Have you guys applied for registration again?

I guess tim time the commission will refuse as Lafortune hasn't been sworn in yet since he was away on business and the comission cannot be in effect till all members are sworn in. I wonder how long Lafortune's trip will last?

The genius of it all is that with 5 members in it, chances are there will always be one that is away, hence no possibility for an internal democratic vote for such things as registrations of new parties. Mind you, with 4 spineless members and Gappy in the cockpit, it is already given which outcome any anti-PL decisions will have.

Again, PL has the lot of you by the balls as you simply won't learn that they have to be beaten at their own game, not yours.

DG, how do you suggest beating PL at its own game?

Short of having a coup d'etat, one either is engaged in the political process i.e take part in elections or boycott the electoral process altogether.

I want to correct a statement in the article: the CAA recomments 7 Members and the President appoints the Members to the Commission based on recommendation.

In a perfect Seychelles, the practice should have been that the President appoints ALL recommendation of the CAA. It all started to go wrong when Rene refused to endorse some recommendation of the CAA some years ago. Since then the person nominated by the Leader of the Opposition: Green, Hoareau and lately Berlouis have all gone along with this farce that is the CAA. The honest thing to do would have been to resign, and let PL do as they want (they already do that now) but by playing along the PL they do a disservice to democracy.

I do not know what it is with these opposition appointees, from Gabby Hoareau to Berlouis, from Prea to Hardy Lucas at the PSAB, the PL crooks have managed to 'kouyonn ' all of them and they just played along whilst the instituions were being fed to the dogs.

The opposition is a broad church. It is difficult to agree on a line to take. We saw this with the boycott of the national assembly. While some were prepared to boycott, others were not. In the end, it was left to the MNAs themselves. In the end, it split the party and led to betrayal. That is just SNP. It woud be even more difficult for the wider opposition comprising DP, Boulle and Gill's party.

What is required is a strong leader, with a clear plan, surrounded by people committed to opposition politics until an election is won. We are back to Wavel Ramkalawan again ...

Too many people see the opposition as a place to be until they can be bought off by PL.

Anonymous said...

None of that would have happened without Jane Carpin.

Now we have an election commission on paper, but the same previous system in practice. It will be more difficult to convince election observers that the system is not working. It is the election observers that put pressure on Michel by shaming him publicly. Even Sarkozy's congratulation message referred to criticisms contained in the election observers' report.

There should be more transparency in the work of the CAA. They won't say how many applied and which ones were recommended to Michel. I bet you even the 2 rejected do not know. In fact we do not even know that the CAA did put forward 7 candidates as required.

The press release by Alain St Ange on the electoral commission calling Herminie a "former speaker" will annoy Herminie no end. Herminie will be fuming (with rage) for a very long time.

Herminie has already extracted a grovelling apology from SBC for SBC not realising he is STILL the speaker of the national assembly. So, Herminie's eagerness illegally dissolve the assembly was simply to sack the MNAs while he held on to his job. He is getting paid for 3 more months for doing effing nothing. Nice work, if you can find it !

St Ange's press releases are about tourism, although I can't see how the tourist trade overseas will be interested in the appointment of the electoral commission. But there has been no press release on the shark attack on the French tourist. They will have to pick this up from foreign news agencies. The overseas tourist trade should know that St Ange is feeding them a selective diet of local news, i.e. just the "good news" and news of Alain St Ange himself.

But Wavel Ramkalawan, J Ferrari and Roger Mancienne has already indicated that they are no longer going to be doing active politics, so they are no longer option (unless the plan is to do like Ralph Volcere and have the ExCo beg him/them to continue) otherwise we need to look elsewhere.

For the time being only Volcere and Gill stands out or shown indication that they are interested (Boulle is back in the wood works and does not appear commited).

For the time being, 44% of electorate appears to be orphans, the opposition leaders (other thna Volcere who is the only one bothered to print a newspaper) the other opposition leaders looks like 'zot in les tonbe'.

Beating PL at their own games means beating them by complying to every rule, regulation and law they make and participating in Seychelles politics with a smile that even they do not see is deadly. Beating them at their own games also means starting a party after doing one's homework where the creed is 110% constitutional and does not give Gappy & Co any reason to deny the registration. That is where MSR/SFP has failed. Beating them at their own game means also attending assembly and keep "met dife anba son fes" there, not on the internet. You get my drift? Hi guys,
There is really a big shark in the water and if nothing is done it will kill someone else. I am shocked how the authorities are going about this. The simply need to summon help from abroad and let the experts deal with it before it gets out of hand. A shark that feels threatened is at its most dangerous. The navy divers better be careful. I think that they should not allow too many boats in vicinity for this will alarm the beast and get it to move somewhere else. As long that it is in one place we have solved half of the equation. The next step is to win its confidence. Maybe feed it for a while. At the same time we start setting up barriers, metal nets just outside where it is so that we keep it within the shallow waters. One thing they do in Australia is use a helicopter to spot from above. It is much easier to spot the shark from above than from a boat itself. We then need to have specialised equipment to neutralise it. The danger is that anyone attacks it with a home made spear and just wound it. Again, a wounded shark is very deadly too. So, the Navy, Fisherman, Port authorities and the Environmental Department must work together as a team and not independently as stated on TV earlier.
I hope that my few tips have been helpful.
I am at your service anytime.

Sperm Whale. (Sorry, this bit was just a joke.) What I wrote above are real facts.

By the way, TiKlo keep your small kolor close to you (already very close due to its length or the shark will bit it off. That is if it can see that damn thing.)

Or a better idea is to send James Michel down there in his best red shirt and he can become a real hero for the Seychellois youth. The President who saved our Tourism Industry and I would even buy a red rose for his funeral.

Oh, and his good friend the Maldivian President who hosted an underwater meeting with his Ministers a couple of years ago to warn the world of global warming could teach Michel how to swim, how to speak and how to scuba dive too.

Our country has been cursed since Michel took over and Khalifa set foot in Seychelles. Now we have sharks eating people in our beautiful waters! What next. A f$%^&*g tsunami and earthquake?

Michel, call the Pope for another confession. This time tell him that your hands really have blood on them and that you did sin, adn that you want to ask for forgiveness. Maybe that will lift the curse from our islands.

DG,

I get your drift and i share almost all of your thoughts...my opinion is that the Opposition/Party/Movement should go back to the drawing board. But at present the immediate decision is whether any Opposition should participate in the forthcoming election?

We are ALL still in the dark about that. From the SNP side nobody and seems to know which direction the Party and its Leaders are going. From the DP, i seem to get vibes that they may participate in the elections, frankly they have all to gain from doing so. Whether Volcere is trustworthy is another question altogether. From C Gill movement side, they are clearly calling for a boycott even if they get their party registered (i beleieve they will be allowed to register in the near future) and P Boulle does not appear to want to participate in any future elections.

I have read with interest B Georges analysis in Democracy Delayed. He makes some valid points. However he seems to be of the opinion that unless PL takes measures to level the field....no political party will win. I do not share this view. This statement may be self serving to justify SNP failure to win the elections. My opinion is that despite all, the Opposition could have won the elections in 2006 and 2007 provided they were better organised (and that despite the lack of internal democracy in the SNP)!

At prsent i do not beleive the opposition should participate in the coming elections, for the simple reason that they been knocked down in the last election but should the SNP beleieve it still has a future in Seychelles politics it should have maintained the publication of REGAR even if they boycott the election(Vizyon is worthless) especially since they always claimed that REGAR was independent of the SNP. The paper was however was a mean to expose the abuse perpetrated by the PL.

Weekly is doing a good job but it lacks depth of analysis.

The older Opposition Supporters are clearly in a desparate mood and are realising that they not see change in their lifetime but there is a group of Opposiiton Supporters who are still keen to fight, i mean the 18-35 age group. Those who have lived through Rene era and multi party politics. Maybe opposition parties should prepare for this group to take over!

The process of National Reconciliation is an attempt to bring forth as high a level of national cohesion as possible so that united as a people, the Maldivians can seek what is best for the Nation and not just what is best for the Party. It is obvious that political division has deprived the nation with the opportunity of reaching a higher plateau of national grandeur and prestige. It is therefore a question of either continuing to swim in a lake of mediocrity or seek to swim in a lake with a larger and better vista,” This is an extract from Mancham's Letter to the editor in Nation today. For once I share the man's views. Putting this in the Seychelles' contect, it takes two to tango.James Michel must come down his high stool, be humble, make concessions to get Ramkalawan to sit down and talk. Ramkalawan for his part should stop being childish and sulking, be the representative of the 40% of seychellois who voted for him sit down and talk.

Mancham could have been the mediator in our current saga if he had not been quick to take sides after the last elections. He could have played the same role that he said he played in Maldives. Unfortunately today his credibility is next to nothing. We should look at other people who could do this. This is the only way forward. We have two stubborn, childish so-called leaders who are unable to meet each other half-way.We deserve better.

Anonymous said...

Without personal financial interests to protect in the Maldives, it was easier for Mancham to play statesman there. In Seychelles, he is clearly partisan moving from one side to another. At the moment, he is hitched up to Parti Lepep. Maybe we need someone from the Maldives.

Road to modern democracy
Violent protests in 2004 and 2005 led to a series of reforms to the country. The protests were organized by current president Mohamed Nasheed and his party. Internal and international pressure forced then-President Gayoom to legalize political parties and improve the democratic process. Multi-party, multi-candidate elections were held on 9 October 2008, with 5 candidates running against Gayoom. A 28 October runoff election between Gayoom and Nasheed resulted in a 54-percent majority for Nasheed and his vice-president candidate Dr. Waheed. A former journalist and political prisoner, Nasheed was a staunch critic of the Gayoom regime. In a speech prior to handing over power to his successor on 11 November 2008, Gayoom said: "I deeply regret any actions on my part ... (that) led to unfair treatment, difficulty or injustice for any Maldivian." At the time, Nasheed was detained and imprisoned several times since the age of 20, for heavy criticisms against Gayoom's administration and its officials in relation with election frauds and high profile corruption. Nasheed was tortured and treated inhumanly in detention. Gayoom was the longest serving leader of any Asian country.

Mohamed Nasheed became the first President to be elected by a multi-party democracy in the Maldives, and Dr. Waheed was the first elected Vice President in the Maldives. Their election victory ended the 30-year dictatorship of President Gayoom.

I understand your view about boycotting the elections, but a boycott must be justified with a cause for it and at the moment the way i see it, SNP and SFP are calling boycotting for teh sake of boycotting. There seems to be no real agenda and SNP is boycotting in pure desperation hoping for something to happen in their favour. What they're going to achieve with it I have no idea and frankly I don't think they do either. SFP on the otehr hand are boycotting everything and making a lot of noise about everything.

Everybody wanted an electoral comission and they got one, but of course nobody was happy about its consistence. I sometimes think they were stupid enough to think that the PL would give them the job of choosing who would be part of it. Again they got tricked BIG TIME and the PL have full control of it. Again this just states what I(and you) have been saying all along, i.e thjat they have to beat them at their own game by playing by the rules, the PL rules. The opposition want to play the game by their rules, hence they keep losing.

As to SFP, yes they need to go back to the drawing board before submitting their application again, this time after a thorough study of the rules, a study they failed grossly on last time.

To be honest with you I must say that with such clumsy individuals I sometimes wonder if any of them deserve to be leaders of the country. That applies both to SNP and SFP/MSR. I really wonder.

You ignore one thing in your faulty reasoning -- the betrayal of Jane Carpin that allowed Michel to amend the constitution.

Anonymous said...

There is a lot going for the idea to allow James Michel to run the country for the next 5 years without a parliamentary opposition. That is not part of his plans, as he wants to be seen as a leader of a vibrant, young democracy. His prestige will be damaged internationally and he may well make more concessions to level the playing field. There is always the risk that the anti-PL significant minority of 40% or more will resort to extra-parliamentary politics if denied a parliamentary representation.

Taking part in the national assembly elections will play right into Michel's hands. He will have the kind of opposition that he likes -- an opposition just big enough for him to claim he is the leader of a democratic country but not too big to be an inconvenience to him. I think he will happily accept an opposition with 4 proportional MNAs. Nothing will change in the next 5 years.

The long game, therefore, is a boycott of the national assembly elections.

But I fear the boycott is hard to sell.

DP and Gill's SFP will not boycott if they think they can get a seat or two (proportional ones). Gill wants to boycott because he knows his support is weak at the moment and he does not want to be tested electorally.

DP is under the illusion that its support is going up and every Weekly reader supports DP. Volcere saw that that was not the case at the last presidential elections.

But that will not stop DP trying its luck again in the national assembly elections. As long as there is a chance of getting a seat, DP will stand. It will be a job for Volcere. But DP will fail miserably and unlikely to reach the 8% threshold that is required for a proportional seat. For the directly elected seats, they are likely to split the opposition vote and hand all seats but one or two to PL. In any case, DP's problem is not electoral reform. It is lack of electoral appeal after being let down by the antics of James Mancham. But reforms of SBC and other state media would allow DP to put its case across better.

Then there is SNP. It is highly unlikely SNP will get more than 6 seats (including 4 proportional seats). This will suit Michel just fine, although he will prefer to win all 25 directly elected seats to boost his ego.

The 4-6 seats for SNP pose problems for the party. There will be those who will want to contest the elections to get one of the 6 jobs, including leader of the opposition. Even if the party leader is in a favour of a boycott, he will find it hard to carry the full Executive Committee along with him because of the potential 5 jobs available. There are those who will be deaf to arguments for a boycott, if they are in line for one of these jobs and having to do very little to get it. SNP will be split on whether to boycott the elections, because some people will put self-interests first.

The only way to guarantee a boycott by SNP is if the party was to be annihilated at the polls. This is not going to happen because you can be sure that, if the party stands, 40% or more of the electorate will vote for it. The 40% or more who are fed up with Michel and Parti Lepep and cannot be bought off.

Nasheed won 25% in the first round and RAm 40% in the first, what do you want to say .Well the final result count.Nasheed won the game , while RAM won humilation.A big different of leadership isn't it?

Wavel Ramkalawan should stay to lead a boycott of the national assembly elections. This will split SNP. Then the party can have election for a new party leader and rebuild the party.

I believe if Ramkalawan is leading the boycott, SNP voters will either stay at home or spoil their vote if they have to go out and vote.

There will be voting only if there are "opposition" candidates challenging PL in the districts. Otherwise, there is no voting and PL gets 100% of all votes on the electoral register, including dead people.

But we can't ignore the possibility that some "opposition" will contest the elections, forcing the voting to go ahead.

I believe if Ramkalawan is leading the boycott, no opposition party will get enough votes to get a proportionally elected seat.

The problem will be that SNP will not get PPBs on SBC if it is boycotting the elections. This will make it difficult to make the case for a boycott. Perhaps SNP could put up 2-3 nominal candidates in districts where PL is very strong. This will give the party airtime on SBC for PPBs which can be used to put the case for a boycott. The candidates can withdraw at the end of the campaign.

Pp getting 100% vote will prove how fake the election is.How can one get 100% when opposition voters won't go to the poles?Oppostion must boycott this election becuase it will be riggged by GAPPY.Instead RAm should take a leaf out from Nasheed 's book, boycott this sham coming election and ask his supporters to march the street in protest.RAM must not repeat the same mistake twice for it would will be sucide.

I just want the people to get all the information they deserve and make up their mind for themselves. SPPF would never allow me to do that back home. Michel keeps talking about our "young democracy", as if this is an excuse for the one-party state paraphernalia that still exist. Since when did democracy need to be supported by one-party state dictatorship in order to grow up ? Our democracy is still young because Michel and Parti Lepep refuse to allow it to grow up. If our democracy has a mental age of 5, eighteen years after the re-introduction of multi-party politics, it is because SPPF and Parti Lepep want to drag us back to the one-party state era. We were a democratic country on 4 June 1977, when James Michel took up arms to bury it and bring about 16 years of full-fledged dictatorship.

Brigitte said...

In all democratic civilized countries The Speaker of the Assembly is seen as an impartial, representing the Legislative Branch of our democratic process. Until now in our very young democracy the former speakers have been respectfull with their counter parts of the opposition. The situation of the CAA today is solely due to the irresponsability, total lack of knowledge about our Laws & constitution, his continued arrogance and bullying attitude which we have been withnessing ever since he took the chair. Patrick Herminie already forms part of the most oscure of our recent history and will be reminded as the only TRAITOR OF THE SEYCHELLOIS PEOPLE.

Anonymous said...

We calling for peace
demostration. How you mobilize them, well usaully is should be the job of opposition parties just the same way as they mobilize people on election. And since Mr.Nasheed is still in Seychelles opposition leaders can contact him in order that he can tip them on how he successfully brought about change by protest.
In a revolution especially when it occur in a dictatorship lives will be lost for a dictator has repression as only tool to try to keep hold on power but it is a csacrifice worth doing, for you could have woell been kill by cronies of the dictaotr without reason. As the saying goes,on a battle field loosing lives are innevitable.

Booldshed as already siad will come from the dictator, but his crimes will accenture International pressure .Unlike Syria where international bodies have other goe-political interestes ,in Seychelles it would be different .
Moreover,i think you learnt from Egyptian revolution ,we were told even by Hillary Clinton that Mubarak will survive the Tsunami, becuase they thought the people were coward but the Egyptian proved them all wrong in 18 days .Mubarak antagonized his people for decades like Michel Mubarak he gave the people the ammunition and when ammunition is abound all the people did they just pulled on the trigger to make Mubarak falldown .

And i will say that to Seychellois, with fear there is nothing like freedom, without freedom there is nothing like fairness and without fairness there is nothing like justice, lacking all these is no democracy, but one partystate, dictatorship at its extreme,it thus our duty and obligation to bring about the change in order to gain our freedom.

To boycott or not to boycott!!

Whether the established combined opposition decide to boycott the elections, we can be sure that we will be seeing some "opposition candidates" standing in the forthcoming national assembly elections. These will comprise of either independent candidates who genuinely want to stand, independent candidates getting the tacit support of the government, or even there is a possibility that David Pierre starts his own party.

Where does that leave the opposition? There is a necessity to analyse well whether it would be more beneficial to boycott or to participate. Having said that, there are discussions under way between Volcere, Boulle, Gill and Dhanjee to work towards a common strategy.

The SNP has not yet joined the discussions. I appreciate that this can be a difficult option for them, for while they are the main opposition, they have suffered a heavy battering which one wonders whether without a complete change of leadership, they can rise up in the immediate. SNP just does not have the capacity financially nor mentally to fight an election but they will not admit this and will prefer to claim that we should boycott just because they are not ready. I still believe that if SNP won the large majority of the opposition votes it was because people voted tactically as opposition voters thought SNP had a chance, but when it comes to the crunch, a combination of minds like Wavel,Boulle, Volcere, Gill and others like Dhanjee etc. could give Lepep a hard time. I agree with Vox that in spite of the shortcomings in the electoral system, it would have been possible for the opposition to win, with better strategy.

Anonymous said...

I can't see any non-SNP candidate winning a single district, unless PL pulls it candidate to engineer an "opposition independent candidate win ".

Only registered political parties will qualify for the proportional seats.

If SNP boycotts, big IF though, DP could stand. Unclear whether opposition supporters will vote for them. If DP stands and still fails to win 10% to get a proportional seat, it would irrevocably damage the party. The opportunism will have failed.

The question is:

Are we in a Democracy or not!

If we are in a democracy, run the elections as a united force.

If we are not in a democracy, and we participate in elections, we give credibility to an not credible process.

This is simple enough.

If SPPF PL field an opposition, then they do it at the peril of the opponent not being accepted as a legitimate opponent. This will bury the 3rd Republic faster then you can blink.

The Country cannot afford political discord at this hour. However, PL have mistakenly pushed the stakes as if a running full sails in a storm. For this Michel shows he is not only weak, but he is also not very astute of a leader and lacks insight on hour a country works in spite of being in charge of one.

SNP- Has run an opposition of arrogance purely. They could learn something from the President of Maldives, but unfortunately for them, they have too many skeletons dying to come out of the closets. Pressure is on, if you do not know why SNP makes all the wrong moves every time, it is this, nothing else.

DP- Founder James Richard Marie Mancham is in bed with Michel to feather his retirement nest. He cannot be trusted nor can anything he is associated with be trusted. From the Nation letter this week, he seems to make us all believe he is still the rudder of the Democratic Party DP. If that is the case the DP has to be sent to the political cemetery, for selling out in Seychelles darkest hour.

SFP- has attempted to filed party registration without success. We will try again. Thank you DG for your suggestion, but we were already on it. The problem we face right now is Mr. Gappy just does not take our calls. So it is looking like we are being deliberately kept out of the process. This shows we are not in a democracy.

The time to put petty party differences aside and self interest and all the bickering in the opposition was yesterday.

It is time to put our country first everyone. In that exercise, we must place our people where they belong in our country.

Vox is right to say that if the opposition had a good strategy it could have beaten Pp in the last election. There are past eleclection in Africa whereby Oppostion won even if the process were severely manipulated but in all of these case were oppostion won they were UNITE and COHESIVE .

The other blogger says that even if the playing was even Oppostion would lost.I will disagree with you ,for if what you say is true there question that crops up then is why does Pp rigged election if it was so sure that democratic process will favor them?A dictator who took power by forced instead by abididng by the rules of the game ,and conducted a Coup D'Etat showed that those crooks knew that through democratic means they would never gain power.

Why we must Boycott the coming election?Because democracy is not a ballotbox, but about conciding power to the people. The Assembly is not part of governemnt ,it is a representative of people. In democracy the primarily function of the Assembly is to embody the WILl of the people not to make it subservient to the Executive branch.it is the spupreme politcal institution thruog which people seek to realise their aspiration, urges and exprectations.,PP autocratic regime does not deliver these purposes.moreover, the conceal manner by which the EC members were picked up has nothing to do with power of people or delegating that to them,it is about Pp raping the rules of the game to keep a grab on power. Thus Oppostion parties have a duta and obligation to bycott this fake process becuase it ignores all evidence of politcal opinion and it won't be fair and free and in all other election conducted under the dictation of pp and his ilks.

Follow up to comments on Opposition.

What we must all realize is the politics of the opposition were the DNA in form of the politics of James Mancham from 1992 onwards, whether or not the opposition agreed with Mancham during that time he was active.

In that DNA, was politics for personal immediate cash gain.

Time to face it!

After Mancham, Ramkalawan and Ferrari style took over. This included a little pressure here and there, and they did a great job until 2006. Thereafter they went to sleep and went back to the politics of money and cash payouts from donors that silence them.

Once we face this reality, we can all move on.

Do something for Seychelles, not your pocket! Then PL will go!

I don’t want to die on the streets like a dog and not enjoy our new found freedom I want to walk our streets with my children with the thought that I was part of the struggle for this new found liberty and tell my children about it. And how about you and all the other so called leaders where will you all be when we are mass protesting and putting our lives on the line? I want freedom. I am prepared to make sacrifices but not with my life. What are the other alternatives?

All private and public sector workers should join in without exception. This way the army will either shoot all of us or they put down their guns and join arms with us in solidarity. What happened in the United States during the civil rights movement continues to inspire people around the world.
Lech Walesa leads the Solidarity trade union and eventually a nation.
In the 1980s, Lech Walesa based the Solidarity trade union more on the civil rights movement than a traditional trade union, eventually helping lead Poland away from communism.
In 2009, protesting Iranian students took inspiration from the civil rights movement, this time using Facebook and Twitter to help spread the word.
Last November, Thorbjørn Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize Committee, received the Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award at Harvard University for his work on human rights and civil rights.
“You have to see that something is bigger than yourself, something which you can struggle for,” he told The Harvard Crimson.
His commitment to maintaining these rights was inspired by America’s civil rights movement, he said. “It is the movement that has influenced the world the most. It proved that it was possible to achieve human rights through democratic means.”
In 1994, Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years behind bars as a political prisoner, became president of South Africa and looked to Martin Luther King Jr.’s example for guidance.
In accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, Mandela said, “Let the strivings of us all prove Martin Luther King Jr. to have been correct, when he said that humanity can no longer be tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war.”

Although our struggle is not about racism but of oppression it is indeed a struggle!

Did they have to dress the Seychellois athletes in Parti Lepep's party colours for the Indian Ocean Islands Games ?

Anonymous said...

Did anyone notice that the white giant at the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean games actually looked like Albert Rene? He is still scaring people and since Sarah was there all alone, one has to assume that Raymond Clarisse wanted Albert to share his ghostly presence with us mere mortals. A few kids will have nightmares for years to come.

As for James Michel, his speech was an embarrassment to all Seychellois who were present. What the hell does Renaissance Morale have to do with the games? Even the Mauritians and Reunion athletes were shaking their heads in disbelief as Michel rambled on and on trying to show the world that he was an intellectual. He came out as the uneducated idiot that he really is. Even Meriton timed his speech properly and while I am not a big fan of his, at least he knew that his job was not to bore the public and athletes.

Simply shameful that instead of opening the games, Michel had to fuel his ego with an out of context, extremely boring and long 30-minute speech. Shame on you fool. Reply to Debate-

First off I would like to thank wholeheartedly, the person that posted a comment of support for the efforts I am putting forward along with other Seychellois.

You asked that we do not give up. We will not give up. We have just started.

We will file Seychelles Freedom Party (SFP) registration again. Mr. Gappy has given us a 10.00 am appointment tomorrow. I ask all Press to be present to insure Freedom is respected in Seychelles.

Reply to the person who ask "if Christopher Gill will protest".

I met with the Media Commission last week- the entire Commission panel. The Chair Mr. Afif asked me if I was the person who will be going to jail for the new newspaper we are forming. I replied to him,:" as Editor, it is normal to face the threat of jail under these circumstances, Mr. Afif".

In regards to protest, yes I will protest and I will lead when the time comes, that is normal as going to jail for being an Editor of a paper I suppose. If that is the price for Freedom under tyranny, then so be it. Similarly, Michel thug shot at our vehicle with a 9mm gun and they broke into our office and stole our equipment. That is normal. But it is also normal for Michel to pay up the bill, now that his people are singing.I am waiting. Michel, Send Barry with a check, unless you want to be reminded of this dirty deed eternally.

On the matter of Ramkalawan and Ferrari October 3rd reference. That was normal too when faced with Tyranny. Is it normal to take Sr. 150,000.00 for such a beating? I should think not. This incident shows where we went wrong, again.

Protest cannot be for the sake of protest. It must be meaningful in the context of our united efforts to secure Democracy and Freedom in our country. We must dialogue with Communist to force them to change their ways and shift the course of destruction they have us on. When they do not we must be willing to protest if our cause is: 1. articulated well, 2. involves the furtherance of Freedom and Individual rights that must be respected, 3. is absolutely nec. to achieve democratic thresholds as a people. Failing that, we will remain in the doldrums as a Nation and the results will remain mediocrity for every generation.

Reply to he who does not want to die.

Your sentiments are normal. I have been there.

Once you realize that under communism you are already dead, because you will never live to be what you can and should be, and your children will see you live a 1/2 life, and they live a 1/4 life, you will not worry about that little detail of impending death or fear factor and you will commit to help us make Seychelles a better place for them and yourself.

Under communism, we all live 1/2 lives.

To fight for Freedom, we will all live full lives.

DO NOT LET SEYCHELLES TURN BACK!

Gill you contradict yourself. You are always saying it’s time for actions. You’re tired of talking, Pp does not listen but now when we are ready for action you are asking us to wait and have dialogue with Pp.
Gill are you a Pp agent placed to distabilise all opposition?
Haven’t we talked enough for the past 20 years and they haven’t listened?
35 years on and it’s still the same tyranny! Mubarak lasted 30 years less than what we are going through!
You say don’t protest for the sake of protest!? Then what do we protest?
How can we protest just for the sake of protest? We have 35 years of grievances to protest so how can it be just for the sake of protest for god’s sake!
If we burn it all down it will still cost us less to rebuild than all they have pillaged from us all those years!
Gill if you are chicken then move over and we will do the deed but remember we will remember that you stepped aside and there will never be any place for you in politics of the new Seychelles!

Anonymous said...

There is no time like now with the Island games going on and officials and dignitaries in Seychelles. They wouldn't dare shot at us in the presence of all the foreign guests!

Brigitte said...

You would never get anyone to protest for anything ever back home. They all want to 'see the fruits of their future' without doing f all. EVERYBODY feels that way. ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE IS PREPARED TO SPEAK THE TRUTH. That's when it starts really, when the truth comes out & people really learn what is happening then it'll be down to them to swallow it all & continue or make their voice heard by protest. IF THEY WISH TO PROTEST.

Brigitte said...

They could protest about the $5 million gone missing.
Unemployment.
The fast spreading of sexually transmitted diseases.
Child prostitution.
Rising price of food.

That is usually the start of many protests around the world. But the majority of the Seychelles people feel that none of the above is causing much stress, therefore they carry on with life.

I do beleive Seychellois in there majority see things as you and me,but after four decades of bein brain-washed and forced to stay silence they need a leader with guts and integrity to lead them .In a democracy this could be achive by politcal leaders,up to now non of those existing politcal leaders have done their duties and take their responsibilties, and that explain why Pp is still around not becuase Pp won election or is powerful but becuase of weaked, divided, brainless oppostion leaders. It seems to me they all want to be politcian be it in pp orin the opposition just to gain their monthly salaray thus allowing them to live a dissent lives while Seychellis are struggle to make ends meet.

Some of us were still teenagers and barely out of college and some where slightly older when they took our country that fateful night and after that the pillaging started to this day.
They dismantled the institutions that our parents and those of us that came after looked up to for inspirations and guidance. Now we have nothing except the meaningless and immoral replacements of our once morally solid institutions for the generations after us that are none the wiser about our true history.
We are now all middle-aged, older and wiser in both years and experience although some of us may have got richer in material we are all poorer today than that fateful night. The night the music stopped. We were stripped of our individuality and persona and cut down in our prime and were forced to live meaningless lives like zombies.
I for one refuse to go to my grave without once more savoring the sweet scent of that freedom that was my heritage!
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if we are Lawyers, Doctors, Accountants, Architects, Clerks, Laborers, Shopkeepers, Priests and Nuns, we are all in the same boat and it’s sinking and none of us have a cocosye (and yes! I will use the “c” in my creole) to scoop out the water. We either swim or sink!
Dialogues has got us nowhere. We should be through with talking. There is no better time like the present and whichever way you look at it we will get wet anyway!
Let us hope that Afif still have property in the Maldives.
I will be here waiting for the call!

Reply to "Cry For Dialogue"-

SFP has called for a BOYCOTT of the Elections. We have not called for a run of the National Assembly posts.

In that context, there will have to be a call for Dialogue, that only PL can make and the opposition will have to accept for the betterment of the Country. PL is lost. They are a bunch of idiots unfortunately that really do not know how to runa country in the context of a democracy. This is why we are where we are.

They have practically destroyed all structures of state institutions in 6 months.

Along the discussion for dialogue is the call for a new constitution.

This one has been sand bagged single handedly by James Michel.

In the context of this call, we list all our requirements.

I have not called for dialogue from a position of weakness in closed doors, it is a call for open national dialogue that is needed.

If we do not get it right, we move to streets.

Okay
The opposition has lost every single election since 1992. So cries that a change on the horizon are about to take place have all been heard before.
2) The opposition deserves to be bitter about the realities of the Seychelles but in my opinion were completely wrong not to adopt the National Reconciliation stance which Mancham introduced in 1992. They know this, they are just to sour to admit it. So sour that they have made him a scapegoat.
Don't you dare deny it....your still fucking going on about it!!!! If you read his article in the Today newspaper in early July you will see that the opposition just used him and disposed of him after the last elections. Not the brightest thing to do. That is his opinion...anyone disputing that?

That Michel was endorsed and congratulated upon winning this latest election does not in anyway shape or form prove that Mancham benefitted financially, what it does prove though is that Michel was the most popular man for the job. This is a LIE that you are spreading Gill unless of course you can prove otherwise.

Now apart from this here is a reality check for you all.

1) The current lepep regime may not be the ideal candidates to run this country but they are far more educated than the opposition. The most intelligent members of the snp are all ex sppf anyway!! An opposition may exist but without any structure, direction or hope.
2) Christopher Gill I do chuckle at the amount of abuse you direct at everyone. I know that most people know that the vast majority of fabricated names on your site are all you. Gill your an idiot. You tried to split up the opposition and failed miserably. You yourself cross floors and come up with particularly crap explanations as to why. No one talks about you on the street- not even to say how full of shit you are. So this is something to worry about. I mean are you just having conversations with yourself all day?
4) Seeing that Bernard Sullivan got locked up for writing some bollocks with an element of truth on facebook...one wonders why you have not been put away a long long time ago for the tirade of crap you write about our current and former presidents!!! Think about it Gill.....really...why haven't you...you just figured it out now havent you.
5) Rene should be tried in a criminal court.
6) to michel hater- he may not be going anywhere BUT that is because he has already been everywhere that you guys will never go!!!
7) Of course some people like reading the posts in this site. It is bloody hilarious some of the stuff that is written.

Now its a sad state of affairs we are in today. Your even talking about Sarah Rene...what the hell does she have to do with anything? Was she in ine of 'zandarks' naughty dreams???

I do not see your name on the voters register, so unless you can prove who you are you are just another Fake Profile, trying to advance his own personal agenda.Fake profiles lack integrity and should be avoided, according to Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.

Our country is at a time and point in history, wherein we need serious people, to present serious ideas, and alternatives. The hard work of exposing the failure, which I have done tirelessly for 7 years, has been done now.

Now we must work to solve the failure, and insure that Seychelles never goes back to the era of mediocrity that funded the lifestyles of a few failures and sell outs that brought the failure upon us.

Is this post all that you toss into the bucket of effort after all these years? Where have you been Marcus? Sitting around enjoying the sun, and sipping cocktails while our country sinks like the Titanic?

1. You say the current leadership is more educated then the opposition. Can you explain yourself and justify such a false
statement?

2. "You chuckle at abuse I direct towards everyone". Here you seem to be attributing statements made by others to me, and confirm your false belief that I use numerous fake profiles, to reply to myself. Surely, I can confirm to you, if I had to reply to myself, the blog would not be reaching 10,000 per week or month or whatever it is. Our second blog called Seychelles reality, which is updated daily, is breaching 8,000 after a few short weeks in business.

3. I believe you missed this point.

4. Here you state the obvious, but you do not mention anyone else. I wonder why?

5. Michel hater- I personally do not hate Michel, I hate the actions of incompetence that is bankrupting Seychelles (officially) and the action of selling our patrimony on his watch, similar to what James Mancham did to us. We have become 3rd class citizens, except of course Michel and Mancham, who do not know anymore what life is like for the average Seychellois struggling.

Nonsense you nincompoop! Americans have been going to Cuban via Canada since the start of the embargo in the 60s - they’ve been indulging in Cuban whores, Rum and cigars despite them being banned. You’ll always find Cuban cigars in the White House – two-faced bastards!

Ou degoutan manyer ou bez lalang liki ou manman! Time and time again you’ve shown yourself to be a degenerate!

"The Bible says,
God created man according his image.i guess it means he created us to his likes."

Exactly....The Bible says!!
By You Guessing that it means God is a person, DOES NOT MAKE GOD A PERSON.

"I do not see your name on the voters register, so unless you can prove who you are you are just another Fake Profile, trying to advance his own personal agenda.Fake profiles lack integrity and should be avoided, according to Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook."

Yet it is your blogg & you can change that, but you don't!!!!!

Because of fear still????

"The hard work of exposing the failure, which I have done tirelessly for 7 years, has been done now."

Exposing failures can never end, for there are always failures in Government, always, unless it's the failures that was putting barriers infront of you that you have dealt with & therefore DONE. The continious failure of the state to the people is of no interest to you, it seems.
